Our hot water heater died very suddenly. We called Plumb agent LLC and Julian was at our house within an hour. He assessed the situation and told us our options. He installed our new efficient hot water heater as soon as it came in. He was very neat, professional, and reasonably priced. I would recommend Plum agent LLC to anyone!

Friendly, prompt, efficient and knowledgable service - perfect! I had a fridge leaking water all over. He diagnosed the problem quickly - a damaged tube related to the ice maker - and replaced it with a part from his truck. I am a new home owner and he taught me how to shut the water off and that I should be replacing a filter in the fridge - oops! I ended up asking about a dishwasher problem. He also quickly diagnosed that problem and replaced a part there too. Apparently caused by an unpopped popcorn kernel that I need to be careful with - oops again! Great home repair professional!

We were having a weird issue with our hot water wherein if we opened more than one faucet/shower, the first opened point started to get cold water even if we had our knob on the highest notch of hot water. We called in multiple people to assess and give quotes but Norlan was the only one who was sure of what was wrong and promptly resolved the issue. His quotes were fairly decent and he was very accommodating to our timings and schedules. He finished all requested tasks on time and was flexible with whatever we requested. Thank you Norlan!

Air Ducts removed and disposed of my 50 gallon tanked water heater and installed a new Rinnai Tank less Water heater (natural gas) fulfilling a long-standing objective to eliminate all possibility of have a leak downstairs. It was on MY "bucket" list but I could never afford doing it at the prices I was being quoted locally, several quotes were literally between $2500 and $4800 more. OUTRAGEOUS. I am a practicing lawyer and, believe me, not all "shysters" are lawyers who are pejoratively thought of as persons having reputations of using unscrupulous, fraudulent, or deceptive methods in business. I personally use this term for those who so inflate their prices that have absolutely no rational relationship to the objective value of what they propose to deliver. Air Ducts was willing to install my customer-provided, brand new in the box, with full manufacturer warranty equipment which I was able to purchase from an Internet-based wholesaler at less than what Air Ducts could have done, according to them, at a fair price. I had really done my homework as an indication of how much I wanted this tank less water heater simply because I could not have afforded to do otherwise. Air Ducts did a wonderful job, were very clean, left my place as tidy as they had found it, and in the face of difficulty because they had to improvise draining a water heater whose drain valve simply would not turn to permit easily draining the tank (which of course weighs a ton and cannot be moved, even by two men, when it is full of 50 gallons of still water. Their charge was very fair and completely in line with the work done. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Air Ducts also returned a couple of days later (as promised) to replace missing tiles under the now gone water tank that were revealed when the old heater was removed. I really appreciate this extra service and the charge, again, was more than reasonable. That, yes, was extra money but it was nothing in comparison to their kindness and helpfulness in helping me get the project completed. Excellent, professional work, performed in a timely manner, by very nice, competent and knowledgeable workers who respected my home, leaving it in a very tidy, clean condition and at a fair charge that cheated neither side of the bargain is simply PRICELESS. They have a repeat customer in me who will highly recommend their services wherever possible. I could not be happier because there is no way I could have afforded the prices being quoted by others. Gee, I have been practicing law for 45 years and with my Master of Laws degree, I have 8 years of college and I don't get paid the hourly rate quoted by the other installers for legal analysis and preparation of legal instruments. They must think a woman alone is a P.T. Barnum "sucker." Well, this "fool" and her money are not easily parted when I am offered NOTHING in return but their greed. Air Ducts reaffirms my belief that there are honest men of good will who do excellent work at a fair price and who do not intend to make all of their profit on YOU. Their honesty and good work will be rewarded which, I believe, will happen because good follows good, and evil follows evil. There can only be justice in this world so long as there are persons of good will willing to practice it. Just don't be a sucker and get a quote from Air Ducts for whatever your project may be. Based on my experience, I believe that you will not be disappointed.

A pinhole leak developed in my hot water pipe. The section of pipe with the problem was wedged between an HVAC air vent and floor joists. Yovany was prompt (arrived at 2:05 PM to a 2:15 PM appointment). He and I went over a few options of repair and concluded that he would re-route the pipe under the HVAC vent. His work was clean, thorough and efficient. Once remedied he tested the pipe for leaks, then re-secured the pipe to the floor joists. I observed him at every stage and he was very helpful in my understanding of the entire process. All materials not used (about 3 ft. of pipe I kept). When I run into another plumbing problem in this aging house, I will most likely call Barahona Plumbing again. One word to other potential clients: his estimate was for labor only and did not include an estimate for materials.

I needed a new water heater (fast!) and was considering going tankless. The people at 24/7 took all the time I needed to go over my options and help me figure out what the best choice for my home was. I ended up going with a highly rated and efficient tank system since the water in my area is quite hard so the added cost of installing a water softener to keep a tankless system running well throughout its intended lifespan pushed that option over my desired budget. The two man team that came to my house were quick and clean! It took less than 4 hours from the time they arrived to my hot water being back on (and I'm including the time it took for the tank to heat up after they installed it). Everything they moved was put back carefully (and correctly!) and the area looks cleaner than when they arrived. They installed, tested, and checked their work. They also attended to little details, like making sure to rinse out any grit and grime from aerators in sink faucets after we turned the water back on and flushed the lines. Great job overall. Would definitely hire them again.

I had Temperature PRO come by to do a check-up of our heating system before the winter and they did an extremely thorough job performing the checks. I have had another company perform a check-up in the past and they came and took some quick looks in the unit and were in and out in 15-20 minutes, but Temperature PRO came by and did a really complete job looking in the furnace and heat pump that took at least an hour. They took off all the panels and used a variety of multi-meters and tools to check the electrical connections, clean out the entire unit, and check pressures using some tools they brought. The service technician (Nelson) was really great at walking me through the entire process and what they were looking for, along with tips and personal experiences. They actually identified some major issues with my heat pump that the other companies on their checks missed. I felt really confident that i had found the right people so I had them actually come out and replace the furnace and heat pump for the house. They were also running a promotion for free hot water heater replacement and installation if i was replacing both the furnace and the heat pump too (lucky me because this was something i had wanted done anyways). They walked me through my options and didn't pressure me on any of the installation options which i appreciated. Once i selected my options they were able to come in the next day to install the furnace, heat pump, and hot water heater. These guys did a really great job! I was extremely impressed with their work (took a full day to do all the work - which was a lot of work!). The work was clean, they didn't cut any corners, and were very professional and helpful through the whole installation. I would recommend Temperature PRO for any kind of heating\plumbing needs. They were able to provide GREAT service and were very helpful and friendly to work with. The prices were reasonable and i will absolutely be calling them again in the future for any other maintenance, check-ups, or fixes that i need. I highly recommend Temperature PRO.

Walter of Hi Solutions responded to my thumbtack query with a competitive bid. On calling he asked succinct questions and reinforced the estimate and committed to a scheduled arrival to fix a pinhole leak in piping at my hot water heater. He arrived on time, was efficient and very courteous and careful to explain what he did and provided me some useful information about the piping in our home. I had previously gotten other estimates which were as much as twice the amount for this simple repair or from companies that would not commit to an estimate without visiting and charging a fee just to look at it. (as high as $85.00). Ct Walter's service gets 5 stars without any reservation or downside..

We have purchased a hot water heater, A/C unit and furnace from Modern. Every time Modern Mechanical comes out for a service call or installation, they arrive when promised, their technicians are friendly, professional, and take the time to explain what the project entails and approximate how much time it will take. They also do a great job of cleaning up after the job is completed. Without a doubt, we'll continue to use Modern Mechanical.

An air conditioner at a rental unit that I own quit working. Gomez came out the next morning first thing at 8 a.m. The diagnosis was not good. Both the heat pump and the compressor needed to be completely replaced. Gomez gave me an excellent price about half of what the big air conditioner companies charge. Gomez completed the work the same day to an excellent level of satisfaction. I will surely use Gomez for any air conditioning work but I ever need to do in the future.

I had some noise (banging, ticking) coming from my hot water baseboards. Kevin diagnosed the source of the noise and made recommendations for low cost ways for me to try to fix it before I spent money. Since air in the system could also contribute to some of the noise, Kevin purged the entire system. He also noticed that the boiler's pressure gauge was behaving erratically and most likely needs replacement. Kevin is a logical thinker, a thorough diagnostician and a pleasant guy to deal with. I will be having him return to replace the pressure gauge and a defective zone valve.

A pleasure to work with! My old tank was in its final leg and I tried to see if I could only replace the heating elements, but he showed me signs of leaking (lines of rust running outside of the panels) and where leaking was occurring when water spilled out as soon as he took off the two panels. I needed a new tank. Unfortunately I was only prepared financially for element repairs, and I was trying to avoid high credit card bills. Daud and I went to Home Depot where he helped me pick out a tank, even suggesting a less-capacity but sufficient one for my townhome to save some cash. He even paid for some of the cheaper (but required) parts himself, something he didn't have to do. As a result of the trip, I was able to afford 6-mo no interest financing at Home Depot for the tank and pay the cash I'd taken out for the elements/labor for the labor on the new tank installation. He worked late into the night so we'd have hot water for our showers tomorrow morning, and even at the late hour, showed me how to adjust the temperature of the water if it was too hot/cold. HIGHLY recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.
