I was in severe pain, could not walk decided to check out the internet, found thumbtack.com . I scheduled a 90 min. Swedish massage in home service thru thumbtack with Rgoer, massage therapist. Not sure what to expect since this was a first, Roger was very punctual and down to earth which eased my worries. Roger was very attentive to what my body could handle due to health issues. Every inch of my body hurt but Roger never rushed, I felt truly relaxed. He has warm and gifted hands. I still have a long way to go, wish I could have him every week, but my pockets are limited. He was thoroughly professional and made sure I was comfortable before, during and after the massage. I would highly recommend others to seek out his services. He's very professional, exceptional skilled, polite, friendly, personable, knowledgable, and has magic hands to ease away aches and pains. - Louise -

Incredible deep tissue massage. I'm very picky with massage therapists as I like very deep work, and Garry really delivered. He was very responsive to my requests and communicative throughout to make sure I was getting exactly what I needed. Thank you Garry, look forward to seeing you again.

My first of many massage sessions was about eleven years ago. From the very first session, Shar made me feel comfortable; he treated more like a guest than a client. Shar is not only a kind man, but he knows what he is doing when it comes to massage. Each session was a little bit different as he demonstrated the various techniques he had learned to treat my troubled areas of concern. Throughout the session, Shar would check in with me to see if the pressure was sufficient and was eager to hear any feedback I could give him about his work. Clearly, he takes his craft seriously. Unlike other therapists I have visited, Shar does not watch the clock and just go through the motions. He is very personable, and enjoys talking to his clients during and after massages. I have been to many therapists throughout the decades and I would have to say that Shar is the best that I have encountered. Do your body and mind a favor .... set up a session with Shar and you'll thank yourself afterwards.

Lisa was my massage therapist. I was told my appointment would be at 4pm but it didn't start till 4:20. That is okay though because she made up for being late with a little extra time. She was a great masseuse listened when I asked to go softer but didn't massage my feet as best as I'd hope and wish should would have given a little more attention to the right side of my upper body like I mentioned. My shoulder isn't sore anymore but my back still is a little bit. It was kind of awkward because it's a room divided by a wall but wasn't connected to the ceiling so it was open and you could hear everything but it wasn't too loud. At the end is the main reason I gave 4 stars. My masseuse was waiting at the front desk for me with water which was great but was kind of standing around making it a little uncomfortable as if she was waiting to see how much I tipped. The lady at the front desk mentioned that she gave me a little extra time because I was waiting for a bit. I then asked where do I leave a tip and she pointed to a sign that said usual tip for a $50 1 hour massage is $10-$20. I feel that $10 was plenty. I used the $5 yelp check in offer but she didn't even really seem to know about it or how to redeem it. After that she gave me their card and I was on my way. Overall: I would come back again. Just hope she didn't think $10 was a bad tip and gives me a crap massage next time. Lol :)

Marc Rubman is an outstanding massage therapist. As this was my first visit, we discussed my various areas of concern. He is an expert in myofascial release, which is rare among massage therapists. I got a deep and thorough massage, with a focus on my problem areas. I highly recommend Marc Rubman.

My session with Reginald was exceptional! He was very prompt, courteous, and made me feel secure that he knew exactly what he was doing. The session lasted 90 minutes. Since I'm in the gym 5-6 days awk, he was able to massage the kinks out of trouble areas I didn't even know I had. Needless to say, my strength level went up a notch in the gym after our session. I willoyd definitely be calling him again. I found my massage therapist!

Engle Cheung was an amazing massage therapist. He arrived with his table and set up quickly; the massage was fantastic. He focused on the areas of stress (neck, shoulders) and has expertise in reflexology so did a great job releasing tension just by working on my feet. I intend to work with him again, and highly recommend him.

Being a medical massage therapist she has given me the opportunity to meet some expectations sooner than later in order to get me back on my feet. I am so happy I found Donnell with HandInMotion. You can tell he enjoys his job. The massage I received was absolutely perfect. He was sure to ask if I needed more or less pressure to ensure it was just right for me. I’ve just moved to the DC area and now I’ve found my massage therapist. I would highly recommend Donnell to anyone.

I have gotten multiple services including a full body massage, an upper body massage and a back massage. All services were fantastic. I was impressed with the professionalism and just how good I felt immediately following the services. I listened to music (of my choice) during the massages which enhanced my experiences and let me know it was all about ME. I highly recommend the services.

I've had massage therapy from a few people all over the DMV area. For me it's hard to find the right person to do that, as it's such a delicate situation to be in with someone you don't really know. Dani made me feel comfortable and able to relax and let go of all my anxieties, stress and tension, with her I was able actually relax (which is really hard for me). You can tell that she has had lot of training and experience. I recommend Heal our Souls to everyone I know, it is THAT good. Thank you Dani for all your help with my back pain! 10/10

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
