Christian Wells and his team are reliable, communicative, experienced, trustworthy and do great work. I had a large complete deck replacement by them and they customized so many parts of the project, including a custom lattice and cantilever solution. His team is so good that I recommended them to my condo board to perform roof replacement work for my townhouse condo association here in Dupont Circle, as well as recommending him as contractor for a new penthouse rooftop deck for another neighbor. Christian was awarded both contracts because everyone in my community saw how dedicated his team is and how good the work product is. I intend to use 5thGen Group for interior work, as well (we had a former lead contractor who was originally hired to transform both the interior and the deck, but proved unreliable and bailed on the deck job, so I used Thumbtack to find Christian/5thGen Group and I am so happy that I did!).

I wanted Interior Design expertise to help us with ideas of how we could improve the look and feel of our house; not wanting to spend too much, I was hoping for a few hours that would result in guidance on paint colors, what to do for our backsplash, ideas on solving some furniture and layout issues, etc. Sussan came to our home and provided some immediate thoughts and suggestions for us which was helpful. She left to spend further time on our little project, and what I ended up with was a package of ideas around a central theme to help guide us as we go through the process of recarpeting, painting, etc., which will be done over a year or two. It included a small poster with photos of some of the furniture and colors that were recommended, and printouts of pieces of furniture that she'd found online. Finally, she also emailed me links to the items and more, making browsing for furniture and accessories a lot more fun. Now we can keep our 'theme board' in front of us as we invest in new items, and we have concrete plans to work toward. I enjoyed the experience, particularly the "unveiling" of the package she developed. Sussan is very nice, pleasant, and easy to work with. I had a good experience and look forward to our redecorating with the guidance she gave us.

Amazing and very talented team! The architects at RT Studio were able to bring my dream home to life; converting a dated late 1980s structure to a very modern and sexy design for 2017 and beyond.

Elena was the project manager and interior decorator for our basement finishing project. She easily grasped how we wanted to use our basement and was able to provide suggestions on how to best achieve a beautiful and functional use of the space. Elena, worked with us to choose elements which looked good together and fit within our budget. We have since received several compliments on the finished project. Elena coordinated with us prior to in order to ensure it would not adversely impact our family. She quickly addressed any questions we had throughout the process and provided a weekly schedule so that we would know what was going on and who would be in our home. Any time that workers would be in our home outside of a normal 8AM to 5PM weekday, Elena coordinated with us prior to in order to ensure it would not adversely impact our family.

If you are looking for an interior designer and decorator, I have an excellent recommendation. KT Wilder is one of the most creative, innovative, fair, and fun people to engage with. Not only has that been my experience, but also the experience of two of my best friends in the Washington, DC area. KT has the unique ability to mesh her own signature and more modern style with each client’s individual taste – and that is when the magic happens. My friends and I all have different styles and KT had the wonderful ability to work with each of our tastes and personalities. She will graciously push you to consider a style or direction you might not have originally chosen, but won’t push too far. She also knows where and when to accelerate or decelerate economic investments. As a result, clients come out with an amazing finished product. For example, I had several pieces of furniture and artwork that had been in my family for some time. I wanted to try and incorporate at least some of these pieces into a newly designed, more modern, and small condo. KT was excellent in helping with this – offering suggestions, modernizing some of the older pieces, and beautifully bringing it all together with my new furnishings and updates. There are so many things that I appreciated about working with KT – I could go on and on about these. I will mention just two here. First, KT is passionate about wanting you as the client to be happy and satisfied. She will try and move mountains to ensure that this can happen. We all know in these types of projects that things can and will not always go as planned. She will be your advocate, she will ensure your needs are met and that everything is completed to an A-plus standard. The second thing that is particularly noteworthy about KT is that she is very competitive from a financial standpoint. I think her rates are very fair. I was never caught by surprise on any billing and she passed along any savings she got as a designer to me. If you select KT as a designer, you would be so lucky. Not only is she incredibly talented and you will love the outcome of everything she touches, you will just adore working with her. She is the best – all the way around!

My husband and I are not artistic or design savvy at all. We found Loudoun Interiors and could not be anymore happy and ecstatic with our choice. Laurie is incredibly gifted and a major talent. She transformed my home into something I could have never imagined it would become without her vision and creativity. Anyone looking for an interior decorator should contact Loudoun Interiors.

Al Barney is my hero. He has been a part of our lives for 15 years here in Leesburg. He is my "GO TO GUY". I come up with an idea and I call Al. He makes it happen. In my last home he created an amazing outdoor space with a screened in porch and deck, flowing to an amazing patio. Years later he created a front porch that made my house unique to others in the neighborhood. Now, I have an older home that needed updating. He gave me an amazing kitchen with an island and cabinets that are breathtaking. Please come see my kitchen. I am proud to say that Al Barney is my friend, my designer, my builder and my mentor. Next stop....my master bathroom.

Pat is awesome. I painted the entire interior of my new home but didn't have the resources to reach the high-up corners in my stairway. He got it done quickly and neatly and also helped me with a few other projects around the house while he was there. His prices are very fair and I'll be sure to have him back to help me with other jobs.

I hired Pam DiTomaso based on a referral I received from a neighbor. My wife and I wanted to break through to the adjoining bedroom to create a large Master Bathroom. We were so delighted when Pam came up with a Bathroom design AND a way to incorporate a Walk-in Closet. The project began in October and was to be completed by Thanksgiving. Of course, things don't always work out as planned...and work completed the 2nd week of December. One of the things that stands out about Pam, is that she visited the site several times a week, her contractor worked cleanly, and Pam stayed on budget! I recommend Pam DiTomaso of LifeStyle Home. My wife and I are looking forward to our next project with her!

Had a great experience using J-Team for a utility sink repair (that fell from the wall and broke the drain pipe). I received a very reasonable preliminary quote through Thumbtack and his subsequent complimentary visit to assess the work matched that price. The work turned out to be a little trickier and longer than anticipated but it gone done very well. I liked it so much I've already asked for quotes for additional things I need done in the house (from bathroom caulking to a kitchen backsplash installation). Jaime is a great guy and I recommend him!

Homequest did an excellent job on my home projects in Washington DC. I have a 100 year old row house and Scott and Asha did a great job managing a project to build a new powder room and renovate an old walk-in closet into an modern office space. Scott and Asha were very responsive with questions throughout the project and their prices were very fair. I would have no hesitation in hiring them again on any home construction project.

We had a great experence with Zoltan Design helping us re-design our retail space and kitchen - good pricing on the range of furniture we selected and installation of a sliding vintage beam door into our common areas opened the space and made it very industrial and modern. Chris and his team have really great style and taste.

Absolutely loved MagnifiqueHomes! I moved to Virginia and needed to downsize quite a bit, moving into a much smaller place. Maud was great at utilizing the small space I had to maximum efficiency, making it feel like a home at the same time. She kept me involved in every step -- making it a truly enjoyable experience. I couldn't be happier with this, my first interior design experience. I would definitely recommend MagnifiqueHomes without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
