Overall, these guys were great. Fast movers at a good price that packed everything up safely, including a large flat screen and a bike. It took 3.5 hours to move a very full 1br/1ba from Ballston to Falls Church, so the totla charge was 4.5 hours to account for travel to the location. The reasons for giving 4 and not 5 stars were that they were 30 minutes late (somewhat understandable, given a 10AM weekday start and DC traffic) and the workers spoke a minimal amount of english, which led to a few communication issues. Nothing major, though. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a local move.

These movers had more heart and stamina than anyone I've ever meet. They worked from 11:30AM until 12:30AM nonstop with a short meal break which they took. I would not hesitate to tell someone who needs movers that the price was fair, the job got done and my furniture was not damaged, even though this move involved a lot of carrying up and down stairs!!!!

Overall experience was fantastic. Crew was professional and planned well. The leader of the crew was exceptional and clearly outlined the move process by explaining my responsibilities (Which was to basically sign, sit back, watch, answer questions when needed) as well as his and his team's, and the day could not have gone smoother! Rose is a pleasure to work with and takes enormous pride in her business. GNVL are not the least expensive of all of the movers you may quote, but there is a reason why. I'd pay a reasonable premium for professionals like this any day!

The job went well and the movers were very quick in taking boxes to and from each location. My furniture was wrapped in shrink wrap plus blankets to ensure it was not harmed in the process. The movers did arrive later than expected and I had to call the owner to find out where they were. Other than the early setback the move went smoothly with no issues. Would use again. Highly recommended movers at an affordable cost.

Name Your Price Movers were efficient and professional. All my stuff got here in one piece. The communication was also great during the process, making sure that I knew what rooms they would be in next and confirming what was going and what was staying. There were two things that were possibly in the fine print with the mover before hand, but in the chaos of the move I didn't realize. The first was make sure you have plenty of your own tape and bubble wrap for glass/mirrors. They did bring furniture pads and equipment galore, but they charged for the disposable material (tape, bubblewrap, etc.). In hindsight, this makes sense. I just wish I had purchased the materials before hand at a lower rate. Also, there was a 5% up-charge for credit and a 5% discount for cash. Since they didn't take check for the actual amount, it was either pay a cash price or another 10% for credit. Again, I just wish I knew this upfront or else I would not have been scrambling to get the cash necessary. All and all I would definitely hire these guys again for my next move. Just be more prepared.

I used Baku Moving to move my home. I was totally blown away by this company, especially for the price. The movers were on time, nice and handled my things with care. They were clean cut and very respectful of all my stuff. The estimate was very close to what I was told. The moving team was experienced and wrapped my things so nothing was damaged. I will recommend this company to all of my friends.

Amine was always available via phone and answered all my questions before the move, very helpful! He told us that he would provide wardrobe boxes, so we should not pack our hanging clothes. However, the wardrobe boxes were forgotten and we were left in a bit of a lurch on moving day. He gave us a $25.00 discount, but I was disappointed more couldn't be done to remedy the situation. Hiring movers isn't cheap, and $25.00 seemed insignificant compared to the inconvenience. The two-man crew was nice, and good at moving things relatively quickly. They were playing music during the move that contained a lot of expletives and other questionable lyrics, which seemed very unprofessional. They did not cover our mattresses so the sheets I left on to protect them got covered in grease and dirt from the truck. Despite the crude music and lack of mattress protection, they worked very hard and got us moved in under six hours (two BR apartment). They went over the initial time estimate, which was frustrating because I provided a very detailed list of furniture and boxes. We ended up having way fewer boxes than the estimate I sent, so I thought surely they would stay within the time frame. Overall - good value for the money, but next time I might go with movers that cost a little more for added protection of my mattresses and wardrobe boxes.

Man I had trouble finding a mover. Everyone was quick to respond to my initial inquiry, but wouldn’t follow up when I contacted them again. A-1 was the exception. They called me to get a more accurate quote, and it turned out, the quote they gave was spot on. No surprise additional costs. The movers themselves were fantastic! They really listened to my concerns and worked very efficiently. We were so pleased with our move!

We used Relocation Solutions, Inc. for our office move, and they were absolutely amazing! From the first site visit to working around problems leading up to the move, to dealing with people, and to mastering difficult situations (like blocked loading ramps) - Greg and his team provided stellar service! Estimates were spot-on, planning and communications were superb, and the team's invaluable can-do attitude turned this move into a great experience (and who can say that about a move!?). The moving crew was experienced, professional, courteous, careful, efficient, and FAST. Relocation Solutions left everybody impressed, including our landlord. We are very happy to have chosen Relocation Solutions. Even if you can find cheaper movers: a good mover makes all the difference- and that is what you get with Greg. Five stars for Relocation Solutions.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

The move itself was good - efficient and courteous movers. The price was good, as well. Despite my requesting morning for the move, repeatedly from the beginning, the time was set for noon - two. I didn't receive this information until 4:46 p.m., the day before, after I left 2 messages asking for a window of time. It made me have to scramble, last minute, to rearrange my obligations that were scheduled for the afternoon.

Like most people when it gets to be the end of a move-out month, things get stressful and worries mount about being able to get "all that furniture" moved in time. I was under such stress for the past two weeks...UNTIL TODAY when Po's Moving pulled up. It was not just a godd experience, it was phenomenal! I was simply aamzed at how safely, securely, and most importantly QUICKLY they emptied out my seemingly insurmountable amount of apartment furnishings and transproted them to their destination. Seriously, I don't rave about service these days as usually there's nothing to rave about. Po and his crew however? Well and truly OUTSTANDING. Great personalities (singing while they worked LOL), obviously skilled at their trade, well dressed in uniforms, etc. An absolutely perfect moving experience. Now having said all that, I want to STRESS the thing we all stress the MOST about if we are here seeking movers...the ridiculously high costs. I had no less than 11 movers answer my calls for aid here and Po's beat them HARSHLY on price! I still can't believe it was as cheap as it was for all the work they did and the traveling to my location and all. YOU WILL NOT GET A BETTER PRICE FROM ANYONE on here...in some cases, Po's was over $250 LESS than other quote on here. So please, if you are intensely stressed about your move, and you have a deadline lease-wise, USE PO'S MOVING! I am sitting here writing this with such a sense of relief that they somehow did SO MUCH in such little time! WAY TO GO PO'S A+++++ and 6 STARS if I could!

Silk Way Movers were fantastic! The movers arrived early and ready to work. I was very impressed by their speed and professionalism. They really knew how to pack the truck and clearly had a system to ensure my items were protected and packed efficiently and quickly. They moved my items into a storage space and ensured my belongings were cared for and well packed. I have a two bedroom condo and the move only took 3.5 hours and the rates were very affordable. The movers were respectful and pleasant, I would highly recommend Silk Way Movers!

We were sold on VKH Movers right after they provided me an estimate. Their quote was very low. The movers arrived on time and were properly equipped. I couldn’t believe how easily they carried my furniture. They didn't seem fazed by the stairs or the amount of work involved. Everything went smoothly and they were done within a very short time. They gave me my belongings back right on time. Nothing was broken or damaged. This company really employs the professional and skillful movers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
