Joel was my guitar teacher for 3+ years while he was a student at Goucher. He has a way of encouraging and making you envision what you are capable of, while also making difficult concepts comprehensible and approachable. I'd recommend him to anyone.

About

Guitar lessons in Columbia, Maryland, and the Columbia Guitar Studio have been synonymous since 1985. David Reynolds has directed players to participate in degree programs throughout the country, and if there is a rock band in Howard County, then one of the members has probably taken guitar lessons at the Columbia Guitar Studio. Over one-half of the students are adults taking acoustic guitar lessons and classical guitar. In addition, there is a strong children's program (Calle El Dorado) featuring ensemble playing and stressing proper technique. Click on hear students play to hear our guitarists play everything from Red Hot Chili Peppers to classical guitar. And yes, instructions in bass, banjo, and mandolin are offered as well.

About

I have been performing and teaching Irish music in the Washington, DC area for over 35 years. My primary instrument is the fiddle, but I also teach button accordion (B/C tuning), bouzouki, mandolin, tenor banjo, and guitar. Over the years, I have performed at the White House, the Irish Embassy, the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian Institution, and other venues in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area. I have also performed at local festivals, Ceilis and Fleadhs, and countless private events, weddings, parties, etc. Currently, I lead several sessions a month at the Limerick Irish Pub in Wheaton MD, on Wednesday evenings (8-11pm) and Sunday afternoons (5-8pm). Over the years, I have taught many students of all ages in my home studio in Silver Spring, MD, and, more recently, online through the Skype video chat program. During that time, I have tested and perfected a progressive curriculum which takes students through the intricacies of the traditional style and the art of improvised variation. As an ethnomusicologist, I have done research on Irish traditional music for many years, particularly on history of the Irish dance repertoire as well as the history of early recordings (cylinders and 78rpms) of Irish music. I pass on this knowledge to my students, thus providing context for each new piece and giving them a sense of what it means to be a traditional player.

About

Michelle is an experienced professional electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, lapsteel, and oud instructor. Styles of guitar taught: Rock Metal Jazz Classical Funk Soul World music Lessons with Michelle are laid back; however, the instructor asks that you do practice to become the best guitar player you can possibly be and to get as much out of taking guitar lessons as you possibly can. Michelle's curriculum consist of using the Hal Leonard Guitar and/or Bass series Vol. 1-3 to learn all the basics of guitar playing from tuning your guitar, to chords, scales, song exercises, and fundamentals of reading music. After the student is done working through the basics, the curriculum changes to directly concentrating on elements of a specific style of music that the student wants to go into musically. At this point, the teacher and student work through specific elements that take the student from intermediate to advanced levels of playing guitar (or bass or mandolin). The instructor asks that you please show up for your lessons on time and please practice. See you soon!
