Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Play Equipment Construction
  1. 1. Measure your backyard

It’s smart to know how much room you have to play with before you get started.

  2. 2. Consult the kids

Look at pictures of play equipment to figure out which pieces are essential for your family. Start with the big pieces first, such as a slide, a climbing net and monkey bars.

  3. 3. Think ahead

No matter what you choose, remember kids grow fast. Leave space for future expansions or upgrades to your equipment, like bigger swings or higher bars.

  4. 4. Find blueprints

Once you and your children have settled on all your wants and needs for the play equipment, find high quality blueprints. Many online sites offer them for free.

  5. 5. Ask about supplies

The contractor you hire should have all the necessary tools, but ask beforehand about whether or not you need to provide any extras aside from the play equipment parts that you ordered.

  6. 6. Be careful

Make sure your construction pro follows the directions exactly. In order for the structure to be sound, there’s no room for error or deviation, and you want your kids to be safe.

  7. 7. Take care of it

Don’t forget to take good care of your investment by treating the wood every year or two. Ask a professional about additional winter care instructions depending on the climate in which you live.
