Jose did a fall cleanup and planting. Cutting back grass, luropi, day lilies, tall hollies were cut rounded as requested, soil was added to improve grading, mums were put in and mulch all around. He did a great job, was pleasant and I will hire him again.

Alonso was great. Came same day to give me a quote which was very reasonable and scheduled for a few days later. Showed up on time and got to work straight away. Removed deep bamboo roots and then laid top soil and mulch. Had to carry everything through my house as no other access to garden and was very careful. Would definitely use him again and highly recommend.

We received outstanding work from Chris Harvey who performed as a General Contractor to reconfigure the backyard of my townhouse. This effort required building a three foot high cinder block wall at the end of my property, then leveling the yard which had a severe slope by back filling from the existing cement patio to the wall. He built a slate sidewalk from the patio to the wall, covered the patio in slate and built slate steps through the wall out to the walking path behind the wall. Chris had a cedar fence with gate built around the yard and then landscaped the yard with top soil, sod, rock, and plantings. It was done exactly as I asked and in a very timely manner with only interruptions for weather and two visits by Miss Utility. Chris is very sociable and easy to work with. He was present for each sub contractor as they started and completed their work. I highly recommend Chris Harvey Landscaping.

P&P did an awesome job in our backyard. They tilled up old grass, put down top soil, and rolled out sod. They worked hard and were very professional! We are now hiring them to maintain our lawn as well. Highly recommend them!

Working with Ed Hernandez is great. We have used Personal Landscape for Maintenance and this year we are installing a garden with them. Ed is always available by text or email, is very responsive and works hard to be sure you're getting the right plants for your soil and sun conditions. Highly recommend.

We hired Ismael to lay sod and mulch in the front and back yards of our DC row house. With this he also had to pull weeds, grade the area and add soil. He was always professional, knowledgeable and on-time. Finally - it was done at a fair price.

Our extensive job involved cleaning extensive portions of our back yard wich involved removal of weeds, old roots, applying the new soil and mulching. We gathered a few estimates and Mitch's one was not the lowest one but we decided to ask him for a job because we thought he had an extensive expertise and appeared to be very reliable and very honest. We do not know much about landcaping and mitch took time to explain the job, and advise us on the best method and materials. He also provide us with itemized estimate on labor and materials. He follwed up with us to find out whether we have any additional questions. His team arrived on time, very well prepared and accomplished the extensive job within a day - our backyard has been transformed - absolutely beautiful job. After seeing what needed to be done to accomplish these result I feel the price was more than fair . Mitch braught a very nice team of five people and I do not think other contractors would accomplish what Mitch's team did. In additions to all work done in our backyard, interactions with Mitch werevery pleasent. It is so obvious to us that he runs a very ntegral and honest business and all our futire landscaping jobs will go to Mitch.

I purchased my home and the landscaping had not been maintained in over three years. David was outstanding!!! He completely transformed my landscape, which was not maintained in the past three year before I purchased my house a couple months ago. He trimmed and pruned trees and bushes and brought in fresh mulch to add throughout my property. He cleaned up overgrown wild grass that looked like hay, created a walking path, added top soil and laid sod to cover up tree roots and muddy areas of my yard. He also planted and transplanted new plants that I purchased to add in once bare-looking area. David also came up with a solution to create a river bed of rocks to channel drainage water. Aside from being competitively priced, his attention to detail, professionalism, courteousness, and strong work ethic was quickly noticed. David takes much pride in his work that I will keep him on hire to continue maintaining, fertilizing, and up-keeping the tremendous work he put into this project. He definitely worked and made my landscape look great as if it were for is own home. David's hard work was so well noticed that several of my neighbors have asked him to do work on their properties. I am very satisfied with the work, and if I'm able to will post some before and after pictures because my words just don't do enough justice for the actual results of my lawn.

Professional, knowledgeable installation. Reasonably priced. Understood my requirements and worked to make sure install was as I wanted (asked me instead of telling me). When install equipment wasn't breaking up the soil the way I wanted he didn't argue, but stopped and rented another piece of equipment. Very adaptive work style. I love my yard now!!!

Tony came out for a free estimate for soil grading that we needed done around the foundation of our house. Not only did he give us a fair price for the work we wanted done but he also gave us other landscaping ideas for our yard. Tony did a great job explaining everything that he was going to do. Our yard looks great. Tony and his team did a great job. We definitely recommend them for any landscaping projects you may need done. We will be using Tony for our future landscaping needs.

They did a really nice job with grading underneath and in the front of the house. They had a lot of dirt left over and they put it in our raised beds for draining soil. Brad Bathgate was nice and professional. We would hire them again.

Paul is a great guy with a friendly attitude who is always there to make sure the work he has done is not only done right, but stays that way even after he leaves! I would not hesitate to call him back for any and all work we needed! I couldn't be more happy with his assistance. (Multiple drains for sitting water, 2 large trees removed/stumps/roots removed and top soil/fertilizer/seed spread to even everything out).

I had a great experience with Pristine Services. Andre & Neville were professional, courteous, thorough & took pride in their work. I needed to clear a long garden bed on a slope. I was somehow unable to capture the effect I wanted from this garden. Andre & Neville removed all the stones used for edging, carried the stones to an area underneath the deck where there had been some erosion, removed the plants & the mulch, prepared the soil & sowed the grass seeds. They also removed all garden debris. Their job was neat, clean & professional. I intend to hire them again for other work. Thanks to Thumb Tack for recommending this company. Great service!!!

I cannot say enough good things about Mr. Sanchez and his crew. He was responsive, helpful, thorough, and a pleasure to work with. There are few things he cannot do! He took a mess of an abandoned yard and cleaned it up, cleared debris, cut down trees, leveled stumps, tilled and aerated the soil, and seeded. We will certainly have him come back as more work as needed. He is a treasure!

Great service, easy communication, and super fast - fit us in with only a few days' notice to grind down 11 stumps before we had a patio installed. Even backfilled in the grinds into the soil so we could have nice mulch. Would definitely recommend.

It rains a lot in the DC region. Our back yard dirt patio would normally collect surface rain water and then percolate through the dirt floor in the mechanical cellar, below the English Basement. JJBY eliminated this water intrusion by creating a French drain system along the walls in the cellar, pouring concrete, and installing a beautiful brick patio with a channel drain in the back yard. Since this work was completed, we have not seen any water intrusion and the house remains dry even during heavy rain storms. We are so grateful and highly recommend JJBY for your masonry, concrete and drainage solutions.

Antonio and his crew were nothing short of amazing. Super responsive and quoted me a fair, informed price. They dug out about a foot of poor soil (post construction) and replaced it with high-quality compost/soil. They were on time and swept up the surrounding area spotless after they were done. He gave me some great ideas for plants and I am so pleased that I'd like to have home back to do some additional work!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
