"I work very closely with non-native, adult speakers to make sure I am helping them meet their individual goals. Each student brings a different level of fluency to the table, so there is no set curriculum and no time frame. It’s all about what works best for each person. What does it take to make YOU feel confident in social or business settings, understood at the drug store and coffee shop, and prepared to move ahead in your career? We'll work on pronunciation mainly, but also vocabulary, idioms, American lingo (how your American friends and co-workers talk informally), and how to put words together correctly -- for emails, letters, and power point presentations. Most of my students are professionals, so, If needed, we'll work on business speech, persuasive writing, and applications and letters. The curriculum is what you, personally, want to learn. Different languages present different challenges to learning American English. From working with non-native speakers over the past 10 years, I am familiar with these challenges. My experience as a high school English teacher, university writing instructor, public relations professional, and business owner encompasses all areas of speech and writing. My approach is relaxed and informal. Our time together will be fun as well as fruitful. You have a lot to teach me too! Our view from the US is limited and often biased. I meet individuals, not stereotypes, from all over the world, with unique personalities, opinions, beliefs, and worldviews. I love what I do -- it's been the most fascinating and rewarding chapter of my career. Let's talk about how I can help you!"

"Hello! My name is Whitney and I'm an English teacher and writer from San Diego, CA. I have been teaching English for over 12 years, and writing professionally for four years. On Thumbtack I offer English/ESL and writing lessons. Please scroll down to the section you’re interested in: 👩🏼‍🏫 ENGLISH/ESL LESSONS 👩🏼‍🏫 I’ve been teaching ESL (English as a second language) for 12 years now and and I have a Master's degree in Culture, Literacy, and TESOL (TESOL = Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have taught many different subjects, including speaking, pronunciation, grammar, business English, academic writing, and more. I've also taught beginners through very advanced English learners, as well as a range of ages, from kids to adults (although mostly teenagers and adults). I enjoy teaching everything, but especially grammar, so if you need help with grammar, I am here for you! 🤓 I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively and live abroad. From 2013 to 2015 I taught English at a university in Korea, which was a wonderful experience. I've traveled to almost 20 countries, and I spent most of 2016 in Southeast Asia and Europe. Having lived in other countries, I understand the struggles associated with communicating in a foreign language. As a teacher, I am friendly, patient, and kind (and funny, I hope!), but I also care very much about my students' learning and I create lessons that are challenging but interesting, fun, and connected to the students' real lives and/or their specific goals. I also encourage students to talk as much as possible! 📝 WRITING LESSONS 📝 In addition to teaching, I'm also a professional writer, creating content for several websites and companies. While I specialize in travel-related content, I have written about a wide range of topics—everything from preschool education to water filters to Filipino desserts. I’ve also taught writing for many years, including to native students at the college level. Strengthening your writing skills is empowering; it gives you the tools to be able to express yourself better. I love being able to help people do that. ~~~~~~~~ Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you! Whitney"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
