Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to In-Ground Pool Construction
  1. 1. Start with a budget

In-ground pool installation can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Do not forget the cost of maintenance plus extra water and electricity. The more elaborate the pool, the more it costs.

  2. 2. Start tallying

Make a list of reasons why you want a pool. What you list will help you determine the type and style of pool you need, along with any extras.

  3. 3. Look at pictures

Check out books and magazines, browse online, and take pictures of pools you see that you like. Create a scrapbook of the things you do like so you can show them to your builder.

  4. 4. Choose a material

Decide if you want concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl. Each type of in-ground pool has its own advantages and disadvantages.

  5. 5. Decide on a shape

Rectangular pools have a classic look and are ideal for swimming laps. Kidney-shaped pools tend to be easier to add water features to and blend in more with their surroundings.

  6. 6. Consider your safety needs

Most local governments require fencing around swimming pools, but you may want to add child-proof locks, alarms, or even video cameras to make sure your family stays safe.

  7. 7. Be selective

Meet with several builders before making a decision and ask for pictures of past work and names and numbers of references. Always follow up on those references.
