We hired Edelina to be the DOC for our 100-person, same-sex, church-hall, largely DIY wedding reception in September. We also hired several of her staff to set up the hall, receive food from the caterer and serve it buffet-style, arrange presentation of several types of desserts, and take care of clean-up. In the several months throughout the wedding planning, Edelina was extremely accessible for questions and recommended several other vendors to us, including our fantastic bartender. On the day itself, Edelina did a phenomenal job! She and her staff went above and beyond, including set-up and clean-up projects that took longer than anticipated, and rolled with everything. She coordinated the timing and direction of several live musical performances, including a band, and handled both professional catering and family-provided food with energy and care. She and her staff ran what could have been a chaotic kitchen with military precision. The wedding went off without a hitch and was very 'us' - thank you, Edelina!

If you want delicious food at an affordable price, you want Chef Kev! I’m am surly the pickiest eater there is, but Chef Kev got the best of me! We hired Chef Kev to provide the food for a networking event that we hosted. As an event planning company, we have had the chance to taste food from many different caterers throughout the Maryland, DC and VA area, but Chef Kev is among the best! His food made all the difference for our event and we cannot wait to begin referring our clients too him! (I should also mention how professional, and neat he was. He left the venue looking better than when he got there!)

After I decided to plan a 70th birthday party for my father, I knew I wanted something different other than just a few guests at home. After speaking with the owner of ALD, April, about what I was looking for and what my budget was, she immediately started helping me brainstorm options for locations and vendors to take care of everything from cupcake orders to banners. She even went to visit the restaurant, see the room, and speak to the restaurant event planner before I could make it over to the location. April is super organized and has timelines and deadlines for each step in planning the event and she always returned my calls and emails in a timely manner. When the day of the event arrived she had all of the materials as discussed and decorated the dining room with a beautiful black and gold theme. She provided everything from chair covers and table linens to balloons. Everything went as planned and she stayed around to make sure everything was on track. I'm so glad that I worked with ALD! They created a memorable and unforgettable event.

Mary did an amazing job as the day-of-coordinator for our wedding. We decided to hire one at the last minute, and I'm so glad we chose Mary. She went above and beyond to make sure everything happened the way we envisioned it (she even insisted on putting together bathroom baskets for the guests, bringing glow sticks for our exit, and lending us her own personal coolers for the bar). She's also really fun to be around, and it's evident that she loves what she does. Thank you!

My husband and I hired Floyds DJ Services for our May 13, 2017, ceremony in Woodbridge, Va. Finding a DJ had proven to be my toughest task during the wedding planning phase. . . that is, until Kacey responded to my request for information. She's pleasant, easy to work with and was always responsive. The constant threat of rain for our outdoor ceremony has us wavering on whether we'd be outdoors or move the ceremony inside. Kacey remind flexible as we didn't make the final call until just hours before the ceremony was to start. We were lucky enough to have BOTH Kacey and her husband, DJ Unknown, for our ceremony and reception. He is a GREAT hype man, and together, they read the crowd and played the right mix of old-school jams (as I requested) and current Top 40 Hits (including a ton of songs from my personal playlist suggestion). DJ Kacey even got on the dance floor to lead the crowd into a line dance and help get the party started. Their sound system was super crisp and there wasn't a single glitch! We had selected a final song to be played, and when it came time, DJ Kacey and DJ Unknown surprised us with a PHENOMENAL send off by having our guests line up in a receiving line to end the day. In a word, it was pure magic! Floyds DJ Services is a true example of exceptional quality that doesn't break the bank. I'd recommend them 10 times over! -Kevin G.

4.5 Drapes were there before we arrived and looked good. The only hitch was that they had told my wedding coordinator that they would come back on Monday to pick up the drapes (Wedding was on Saturday) which kind of stressed us out but we just thought we'd deal with it later. But then at the end of the wedding the vendors came and took it down which was great, but we could have done without the added stress.

Wedding Planning StacyAnn was absolutely AMAZING. I got in touch with her quite a few months before our wedding. Whenever I had a logistics question during the final months of planning, she was quick to respond and always had the answer. When it got to the actual month and weeks before the wedding, she was beyond amazing. The week of the wedding, she met with my mom, fiance, and me to go over final details and to finalize an incredibly detailed day-of schedule. She contacted all of the vendors to make sure that everyone was on the same page and that they knew the schedule. I didn't realize how much work that would be until I saw everything that she was doing. She was also a wonderful presence at the rehearsal, keeping us all on track and making sure that the wedding party knew what they were doing the next day. StacyAnn goes above and beyond. It was really helpful to know that I had someone who was going to make sure that everything went the way we wanted it to. I will absolutely be recommending her to everyone we know. Hiring her was one of the best decisions that we made for our wedding. She let me enjoy the final days of preparation and enjoy being a bride, instead of going crazy with all of the details. Words can't express how thankful we are to have you.

We had such a fabulous experience with Kimberly and her staff! Coming from an event-planning background myself, I was more of a type-A bride than I would like to admit. Two weeks before the wedding, I handed Kimberly a 40-pg field manual (unsolicited) with detailed instructions on how to set up the venue and a timeline detailing the day's events down to the minute. I'll be the first person to admit that it was not an easy road map to follow, and Kimberly and her staff executed it perfectly. The decorations looked better than I had ever imagined and the whole event ran incredibly smoothly, despite my husband and I making several changes to the plan on the day of the wedding. She and her staff were in excellent communication with our DJ, MC, and live musician, and virtually unseen by the rest of the guests. Moreover, she maintained an incredible attitude throughout and was a joy to work with. I couldn't be more pleased with the experience and I know our guests would agree!

We can not express into words the phenomenon job that Extravagant Affairs did for our wedding on 11/05/2016. Our guests are still talking about the excellent food selection. If you are looking for elegance, price affordability, and professionalism, I would definitely recommend them

I had the distinct pleasure of working with the incomparable Michele Palmer (and her dynamic team) for my recent wedding in October 2016. I hired Michele and her team to help with month-of wedding coordination. Initially, I thought I only needed someone to help set up the venue on the day of the wedding and handle week-of phone calls with the other vendors to make sure that everyone was on board and had the correct details. However, as this was my first time planning a wedding, and despite my tendency to be an extremely organized person, there were so many little things that Michele and her team took care of that I hadn’t even expected or anticipated and that helped my wedding go off without a hitch. I would ABSOLUTELY hire Michele and her team again, for any event I host, and merrily pay whatever price to secure her services. In chronological order, and among other kudos for things that I am sure happened behind the scenes and of which I am unaware, I can credit Michele and her team with: -Coordinating the walkthrough at the venue with the caterer, myself, and her team (which happened more than a month prior to the wedding) -Working with the unusually inflexible venue to book a real band, get the band in for training, and arrange for the band to be there with ample time to set up and take down their equipment -Working with the venue to design a floor plan and timeline that the venue was able to understand (despite their perpetually baffled reactions to things from cabaret-style seating to the timing of cocktail hour) -Arranging two rendezvous with myself and my husband (prior to and after the wedding) to meet halfway and transfer LOTS of wedding “stuff” from one vehicle to another. (NEW BRIDES: this is SUPER IMPORTANT because it allowed all of our wedding guests and ourselves to leave the venue at the end of the evening without having to wait around for any handmade decorations, gifts, etc. to be collected and transported into someone’s car. It was the #1 thing that made us feel like we could celebrate on the day rather than be the hosts.) -Chunking last-minute detail information for me, such as deciding on linens, and communicating that information to the caterer (including number of each type of linen for each specific type of table in the venue) -Making useful suggestions that enhanced the wedding experience for the guests (pintuck linens instead of plain, three lanterns on the tables rather than one so they wouldn’t get lost) -Exchanging seemingly hundreds of text messages to answer my last-minute questions and attend to last-minute requests for things such as changing out an escort card when one of the guests broke up with his date two days before the wedding -Arranging for 29 sets of fairy lights for our lanterns, checking the batteries for each one, and stuffing them into the lanterns (saving me from a seriously tedious task) -Being prepared to handle any number of high-maintenance relatives, including knowing their names and where they would be seated -Handling guests that showed up to the venue 75 minutes early (!!!) when the venue was not ready to receive them -Checking in with myself and my husband multiple times throughout the evening to make sure we were OK and had everything we needed (food, drink, a moment to collect ourselves) -Working hand-in-glove with the caterer to accommodate our unusual ceremony (of unknown duration) -Helping me to bustle my dress quickly and efficiently with little direction (CRUCIAL when you don’t have someone at your final fitting and simply need someone to bustle the dress who has bustling experience) -Tearing it up on the drums as a guest drummer for the live band for a song or two -Checking in after the wedding to arrange any and all wrapping-up details PS: Michele can totally hook you up with lanterns and make your tables look SUPER romantic! See attached photo. :-)

Jacqueline was VERY professional, punctual, responsive, responsible, and an ABSOLUTE joy to work with!! Having her as our wedding coordinator was a life saver the last 3 months of planning our wedding was the MOST valuable vendor we hired!! She was worth every penny! She helped put my anxiety at ease throughout the planning process, especially by being there for any issues the day before and day of our wedding!! She made sure she handled any issues those two days without letting me know and keeping me calm!! I would HIGHLY recommend Jacqueline to anyone I know!!

We had my engagement ring made through KatherineHelena. It was stunning! Even better than the photos I brought for reference in what I wanted to have done. We already have and appointment set up to work on our wedding bands in a few months. We wouldn't go anywhere else. Mary followed up with us immediately every time we reached out and had an answer to every question we asked. We're sending more friends her way!!!

Shawanna planned my baby shower, and my son's 1st and 2nd birthday parties. All 3 events turned out beyond expectations. Each theme was carefully thought out and perfectly executed. Shawanna has a very intricate eye for detail, so you can expect everything to be creatively crafted, from the invitations down to the favors. The favors are definitely always one of a kind. My favorite is the balloon arches. Hard to believe they are handmade; they look like something out of a catalog. I would definitely recommend Exclusive Bashes for anyone who is planning an event. It will surely be one to remember.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

What does a wedding event coordinator do?

Pulling off a large, complex wedding or an elegant, small affair requires juggling myriad details, including the officiant, food, drink, wedding cake, entertainment, transportation, rehearsal dinner, photography, equipment rentals, venue reservations and more. A wedding event coordinator can help you keep track of these details, overseeing the planning process and managing everything on the day of your wedding. Each wedding coordinator (and wedding) is different, but in general you can expect an event coordinator to:

  • Help you devise a realistic wedding budget and hold your vendors to it.
  • Map out a master plan that includes all of the details including ceremony music, favors, the guest book and more.
  • Suggest ceremony and reception locations that fit your wedding size, budget and vision.
  • Suggest florists, photographers, bands, caterers and other vendors that fit your budget.
  • Negotiate vendor contracts for the best deals.
  • Create a timeline for the day of the wedding that includes each vendor and member of your wedding party.
  • Mail invitations and track RSVPs.
  • Answer questions about wedding etiquette and current wedding trends.
  • Manage the wedding day from supervising vendors and setup to handling last-minute emergencies.

How much does it cost for a wedding planner?

Wedding planning is a full-time job — unless you hire a professional to handle the hard work for you. The cost for a wedding planner will depend on the level of service you desire. The least expensive wedding planner option is day-of coordination, then partial service, then full-service.

The national average cost for wedding planning is between $990 and $1,300. Costs are greatly affected by region, with rural or smaller-town wedding planners often far more affordable than planners in higher-cost cities. Here are some examples of the various levels of wedding planning and their potential average costs:

  • Day-of-wedding coordination: $800-$1,700. Day-of services can include the planner finalizing all details, creating a timeline, confirming vendors and overseeing all setup, day-of activities, and cleanup. The couple does all the front-end planning and contracts all the vendors. Time commitment could be about 15-25 hours, depending on pricing.
  • Partial service: $1,500-$3,800. Here the planner works with the couple from the beginning, helping contract vendors, creating a timeline, and overseeing all details of day-of execution. Time commitment could be about 30-60 hours, depending on package and pricing.
  • Full service: $3,500-$8,000 or more. Here the professional handles all wedding and planning details including working on design, securing rentals, getting the venue and vendors, and handling complete execution of the event. Time commitment could be 50-150 hours or more, depending on package and pricing.
  • Consulting: $50-$150 per hour for design, vendor, reception and other wedding planning consultation.

What should you ask a wedding coordinator?

When you hire a wedding coordinator, you want to make sure he or she gets you and can execute perfectly your vision of your dream wedding. To find the very best fit, it’s important to ask these five questions:

  • Are you available on my wedding date? If the coordinator isn’t available on your big day, there’s no reason to continue the interview — unless you’re willing to shift your date to accommodate their schedule.
  • What’s average cost of most of your weddings? If the coordinator’s usual wedding is outside your range, they might not be the right coordinator for you. Ask whether the coordinator requires a minimum wedding budget. In general, the wedding coordinator’s fee should be about 15 percent of your budget.
  • What is your speciality? Some coordinators specialize in day-of coordination, some create the overall vision, and others act as a producer. Make sure your wedding coordinator provides the type of services that will most help you create the event you have in mind, such as selecting vendors and handling their contracts, or managing the guest list and invitations.
  • What are your ideas for fulfilling our wedding vision? After you describe your dream wedding — rustic or sophisticated, traditional or funky — the wedding coordinator should be able to suggest appropriate venues, menus, decorations, etc..

Do you have a portfolio? Ask to see photos of their favorite weddings, especially if they’ve managed any that are similar to what you have in mind. This will help you see if you like their style and if their ideas seem fresh and creative.

Do I need a wedding day coordinator?

Even if you’ve handled every detail of planning your wedding, you might appreciate having a day-of wedding coordinator in your corner. Usually, the coordinator meets with you a few weeks before your wedding to put together a detailed timeline of everything that needs to happen on your wedding day. Then, on the big day, the coordinator makes sure everything goes according to plan — and handles any emergencies that pop up, such as party crashers, missing tuxedos, late vendors, disappearing bridal party members and more. Most wedding coordinators also handle:

  • Distributing the wedding day timeline to all of your vendors.
  • Coordinating all of your vendors, including the photographer, florist and baker.
  • Conducting the wedding rehearsal.
  • Helping the bride and her wedding party get dressed and take photos.
  • Checking floor plans, lighting levels, cake placement, menus, favors and more.
  • Collecting the wedding gifts and keeping personal items safe and accounted for.

Even if you don’t think you need a wedding coordinator, check with your venue. Some require that couples hire a day-of wedding coordinator for the day of the event.
