Introduction: I teach out of our home in Hiawatha, KS, as well as online via FaceTime and Zoom. A variety of learners come to my studio to learn various skills. There are children, millennials, and senior citizens studying piano, singing, music theory and/or songwriting. I have degrees in music, elementary education and counseling. The combination of skills and expertise from these three fields, along with my easy-going personality, allows people to be at ease and experience encouragement in the learning environment, which is a key part of progressing. Many people come to me who once played an instrument, sang in a choir, or performed in a musical. The music has been missing from their lives and they long to get back to it. A lot of children are very motivated to sing and/or play because they like how they feel when experiencing music. Some students are preparing for an audition and need the support and expertise of a teacher. No matter what the goal, I get to help people pursue their dreams, grow in confidence and ability, and participate in music in new ways. I love that!

Piano Lessons

Our son (10 years old) says that Melody is 'amazing' -- she's friendly, kind, and knowledgeable -- and that he's really enjoying working with her on his keyboard/piano lessons. From our perspective, each lesson has started on time, run for the full class length, and been busy/filled with activities and learning. So, everyone's happy!

Piano Lessons

Piano Lessons with Melody are Productive! I am making fast progress in understanding Harmony, Melody and all the makings of a lead sheet so I can play fake books. Melody is kind and has the perfect name for piano! Nancy

Singing Lessons

I was really nervous about starting lessons and signing in front of a stranger, but Melody made me feel very comfortable to let me belt my voice out and not to be afraid.

Piano Lessons

I love taking lessons from Melody! She is so friendly and professional - all around a great instructor for children and adults, beginners and experienced musicians. She is incredibly easy to communicate with and always tries her best to accommodate tricky schedules. She’s also just fun to spend time with. I’m so happy I found her on thumbtack!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Students reserve lessons for the month by paying at the first lesson of each month: cash, check or Venmo. If a lesson is missed, we can try to reschedule if I have been informed of the absence with 24 hours notice.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

In the beginning, I want to get to know the student's music background (if any) and what goals they have. I like to know what style of music they desire to play/sing and how they best learn. I am fairly flexible in teaching style, seeking to find what works best for different learners.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a member of the National Music Teachers Association and Colorado Music Teachers Association. These organizations provide opportunities for continuing ed, as well as keeping me informed of opportunities for students. I also read articles and have attended a national conference for the past 7 years. I have a minor in Music Education from Kansas State University. Music has always been a part of my life, whether learning, teaching, performing, songwriting, accompanying, directing children's choirs or worship-leading contemporary church bands.
