Just few months in United States, we were looking out for a good English and Math Tutor for our 9 year old. We had been suffering with many focus related issues with our kid so were bit concerned whether we would find someone who can understand and be patient with our kid and his issues. We are very glad and lucky to find Todd Morgan. He is really very patient with all those constant questions, focus problems. Never saw him raising his voice or losing his temper. He seems to understand his problems and would be always interested to discuss various topics with him. My son got to know about elections, air planes and various other topics of his interest. His designated time is only for an hour but they both seem so much engrossed with the topic that normally the time get extended further. My son's reading and understanding of the language has improved drastically. His teachers have noted down the difference. He would be always interested in my kid's overall report at school and other therapies that he is going through. After tuition time, we would often discuss various techniques to improve my kid's attention and interest. Due to his long experience in teaching and handling kids, we do respect his opinion a lot!! We are definitely getting much more value than what we are paying for!!!

Cathan is an amazing teacher and individual. She has the remarkable gift of being able to teach both the beginner and the highly advanced student. Between our three children and involvement in the music world, we have had exposure to many piano teachers. Cathan is singular in her ability to teach the basics of music and playing piano AND musical expression, beautifully interpreting a piece. She is also very good at selecting just the right music that pushes a student forward at the right pace. We came to Cathan after a negative experience with highly-acclaimed piano teacher in the area who just didn't give proper attention to our son. After four years, he simply wasn't progressing, and it didn't seem like it was his fault. We gave him the choice to quit piano or to take lessons from another teacher. To our surprise, he wanted to try another teacher. Once we switched to Cathan, we rapidly saw significant improvement in his playing. Now it is several years later, and even though our son is a young man on the brink of adulthood, he still chooses to take piano from Cathan and practices regularly without ever being prodded. It is a joy to have this music fill our house. We highly recommend Ms. Kabrelian's studio to anyone considering music lessons. It has been a life-changer for us.

Katy did a fabulous job tutoring our son for the ACT! His test score increased from 27 to 30! She spent the majority of the time helping him with testing strategy. We are very happy with her.

Carlos is a very sincere, intelligent, thoughtful, and endearing person. Anyone lucky enough to have him in their life through work or otherwise are a better person for knowing him. I've learned many wonderful things from my friend Carlos. From Spanish, to life lessons, to knowing when to apply yourself and dig in with a little elbow grease, or even when to simply keep your mouth shut. He is an amazing friend and would, at the drop of a hat, help anyone out who may be struggling, in a tight spot, have a question, or just in need of a great conversation. I would score him 100 stars if it were possible!

I am passionate about teaching so try to do so in a manner that keeps the student engaged. I do not strive to simply teach the student, I strive to help the student understand the material well enough to have the ability to teach someone else. I do this by making them feel as comfortable as possible to ask any questions needed for better understanding.

I've been playing the guitar for 18 years and spent the last 5 years playing in touring bands. I am great with kids and have excellent patience to teach. I help my 10-year-old niece with her homework all the time. She actually prefers me over her parents because I can show her in a way she can understand it. I have also been an avid swimmer all of my life and could easily teach any child how to do it. The neighborhood kids all know me as Uncle Mike, so when I go to our pool, I never get a moment alone.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
