I am so happy with Jeremy and this company! My central air unit is about 17 years old and needed servicing. I've heard stories of other companies always telling customers that they need a new unit and that was the last thing I needed to hear financially! But Jeremy did his diagnostic work, thoroughly cleaned my unit, found a number of leaks in my duct-work and other minor problems and now it works perfectly, and for a fraction of the cost that I had feared! He is also very polite, works fast, and cleaned up after himself. I am very impressed and I will not hesitate to refer him to friends and family and he will definitely be the one that I call with any future needs! THANK YOU~

Steve came out and replaced my water heater even when it required some extra work. He even came out on a Sunday and stayed till it was done. Was happy with his work and his pricing. Felt comfortable having him work in my home with me and my small child. Would hire again for other handyman jobs!

I called Bob on Saturday and he was able to come out the following Monday morning. He arrived a little early (after calling before hand to make sure it was okay to do so) and was incredibly professional, informative, honest and upfront. He took care of our A/C issues (changed out our blower, refilled our Freon, and more) for a reasonable price after running everything by us ahead of time. To put it simply: Bob and Holsinger Heating and Cooling is awesome. We will definitely reach out to him again should we need HVAC work in the future.

I download this app about 8 pm one evening, looking for someone to come to my house and help me with my air conditioning. The second person to give me a quote was R-Mech. I called the very next morning and spoke with the man who send me the quote (via this app) and scheduled for someone to come over. Mike Barker came out to my house and all I have to say is wow. He answered every question I had he took the time to explain things to me and he also gave me a recommendation. I was very please with this company and will definitely refer them! Thank you guys for having the professionalism that you did!

New air conditioner installed by someone else and never ran right. They came back several times before I came across Eric's number. He responded right away, showed up an hour later and had the ac running great.

Great experience- Joey was early and worked extremely efficiently. Could tell right away he wanted to find the cause of my AC issue and help me out. Every other pro on here was already trying to charge me extra before they even saw the unit. Joey was fast to the scene and definitely didn’t try to up charge me or get more work of out me. Super professional and highly talented/qualified. I will be calling Joey again in the future if I need any more help. I highly recommend going with Hill heating and cooling.

I had received 3 quotes for repair to my central air unit and Ryan Scott Heating and Cooling was about $200 cheaper than the next lowest bid. Scott did a great job and was very professional.

My kids bathtub tub was draining incredibly slow (thanks to encouraging my daughter to paint- little did I know she had been pouring her used paints down the drain). After multiple failed attempts to fix it myself- I realized, I am not a plumber. Plus who wants to actually do this?! Oh wait...plumbers actually WANT to do this! They are trained & certified to deal with the messes we make! Polestar is extremely qualified in plumbing & heating & cooling. I should have made the phone call to them at the first sight of problems instead of causing myself a headache! Danny came out to diagnose the issue. Gave me a written proposal of the work that needed to be done -with upfront pricing even! I agreed to move forward with the repairs. Mike followed shortly after to do the repairs needed. Both guys were extremely respectful of my home, wore their shoe covers to prevent tracking in anything. Incredibly polite & communicated with me throughout the entire process. They genuinely cared about my problems, fixed it within a couple hours & we were good to go! The office staff answering the phones were wonderful as well. Great plumbers, technicans & office staff. I can not thank them enough!!!

I was very please with the service that M & M heating and Air Conditioning provided. My furnace had stop working during those frigid temperature, which had my wife in a state of panic. Needless to say, I was able to contact this Heating company. And they responded within an hour or so, and my furnace was working again, which put a smile on my wife's face. The technician was pleasant and demonstrated true professionalism by taking the time to explain to me what he had done and what I was paying for. And lastly, there price's were fair and affordable. And yes, I would recommend them to my family and friends. Good Job M & M Heating and Air Conditioning!

Sal came out within the hour to help fix my outside unit. They were done in less than 15 minutes, and only charged me for the diagnostic since it was replacing an obsolete part!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
