Steve came out and replaced my water heater even when it required some extra work. He even came out on a Sunday and stayed till it was done. Was happy with his work and his pricing. Felt comfortable having him work in my home with me and my small child. Would hire again for other handyman jobs!

Jose is awesome! I live in a 1940s Tudor home in Waldo that was in need of some desperate TLC while maintaining it's old charm. Jose fixed a 4ft patch in my basement wall where I had a leak from the upstairs laundry, smoothed over a bedroom ceiling that had some significant water damage from a roof leak, and completed a beautiful archway in my entrance area. I'd recommend Jose to anyone looking for a professional who's not only on time, but does a great job!

I hired William Jackson of HDT Sound to connect my whole house sound system and wall mount two large TVs. Basically the house I just purchased was wired for sound throughout but the previous owner took his receiver and the one he left was outdated. I had no idea what to do with all those wires! William promptly came out to my house to assess the job and provide me with an estimate. William recommended some receivers that would meet my needs and I made the purchase. We then scheduled an appointment for install. William and his apprentice arrived on time and went to work. William completed the job in a thorough, professional manner and explained how the system worked. He took the time to properly tag all wires to identify them which was very nice/helpful. In fact, the guys went beyond the scope of work by helping me move a large, heavy entertainment table from the garage to my bedroom. Awesome! To sum it all up, I highly recommend William Jackson of How Does That Sound for all of your home theater needs. He is a super nice guy who is professional yet personable, and experienced in his trade. I will definitely hire HDTSound again for my future home theater needs.

Mike responded very quick to my inquiry and was willing to try to make it the same day. He explained everything to me based on what he could see on the photo's I provided to him and he sent his best guy out Russ to finish the job. Russ was on time and walked me through step by step on what he was doing and why to find the real problem with our foundation/water issue. I was quoted crazy foundation repairs and was told all the extra things that really wasn't needed to be done by other company's. Rescue 1 is honest and trustworthy!! Best home repair experience ever!! Highly recommend!!

Fernando is a very honest, very hardworking electrician. We hired him to finish a job on our flip home that our previous electrician didn't complete. His task was to run new wires from the panel to three ceilings. In the process, he found a few instances where the previous electrician had bundled wires within code, but not the most efficient way to run them. He corrected those issues for very little additional cost. He cares that the work he does is safe, within code, and run logically to the breaker panel. We trusted him enough to have him trouble shoot an electrical problem in our residence. He let himself in, and spent much longer than he planned trouble shooting the problem, but he was determined to find a fix. His fees are very reasonable. He's honest, respectful, and very competent.

I have used Kansas City Handyman Services on numerous occasions and have been very pleased with the outcome. It is rare for this company to not have a solution for most everything in the home. I recommended them to my daughter-in-law and she was also pleased with the outcome of that work request.

I can't say enough great things about our experience working with Johnny / VIP Services. Johnny is extremely professional, he has excellent follow through, is a great communicator and is very thorough. He is a very hard worker and we are very pleased with the work he did for us. Being first time homeowners, we wanted to make sure we hired someone we could trust who truly had the knowledge and experience to identify and solve the problems we were having with the gutters in our new home. Johnny quickly found the problems, was able to explain them and the damage they were doing to our overall home, as well as come up with a plan on how to solve these issues in the best way possible and avoid future damage. He did all of this in 105 degree weather with a smile on his face and went above and beyond. I highly recommend VIP Services!

Manny professionally and creatively finished some tricky trim work around some basement windows, a ledge shelf, door and fence repair. The finished work looks great and we appreciate his expert attention to detail. He made the time to do this work over the weekend which worked out great for both of our schedules. Manny's a flexible, professional, talented contractor and we look forward to working with him on other projects around our home in the future.

KCCableCo made the installation of home ethernet ports a very enjoyable process. First, they were very responsive and flexible in finding times that fit in my schedule. I actually had to reschedule three different times. No problem. They promptly rescheduled my appointments at times that worked for me. The technician that completed the work was very personable and professional. He showed up right on time on the two separate occasions that he was scheduled. The work that was complete was top-notch and affordable to boot. I would highly recommend working with KCCableCo for your next home project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who wall mounts TVs?

Electricians, handymen and TV installation specialists may all provide television mounting services. The person who does the mounting should be qualified and knowledgeable about basic construction concepts as well as working with audiovisual cables. In general, no specialized certificates are required to provide television mounting services, but as always do your diligence and make smart hiring decisions.

It’s important to find an experienced professional who will ensure the TV wall mount meets building code. Most regions have fire codes that don’t permit high-voltage power cords behind walls (low-voltage wires like HDMI and video cables are generally acceptable). A basic wall mount on drywall may take approximately one to two hours, while more complex mounts on brick or stone with hidden cables can take three or more hours. If you need more electrical outlets installed near your entertainment system, you may want to hire an electrician. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

How much does it cost for surround sound installation?

If you’re installing your dream home theater, you want the perfect sound system to round it out. The cost for surround sound installation will vary based on the speaker system you select, the amount of wiring and prep required for the job, and labor rates in your region. Home theater installation specialists can advise on the best surround sound speakers for your space and the technology you are using. Here are some examples of average home theater installation costs and the cost of surround sound speakers:

  • TV wall mount and up to 5 wall-mounted speakers with hidden wires: $399.
  • 60-inch TV and small home system: $2,080.
    • Equipment cost: $1,680.
      • Five box speakers and subwoofer: $500.
      • Three HDMI wires: $30.
      • Surround amp: $250.
      • 60-inch TV and bracket: $900.
      • Labor cost: $400 Including setup, wiring and TV mounting.
  • Projector and screen system plus audio wiring throughout home: $12,900.
    • Equipment cost: $9,900.
      • Approximate wire costs: $2,700.
      • Projector and bracket: $1,500.
      • 110-inch screen: $600.
      • Surround amp: $500.
      • 5-inch ceiling speakers and sub: $1,400.
      • Remote control system: $400.
      • Eight zones of speakers and volume controls: $2,800 ($350 each)
      • Labor cost: $3,000. Includes prewiring for 5-inch ceiling speakers, one subwoofer, one 20-inch to 50-inch HDMI, Cat. 6 control wire to projector, 1.5-inch tube for future wire changes, and wiring for two to eight additional audio zones throughout the home. All equipment (audio boxes, amps, cable box, etc.) is concealed. The audio zones are controllable by iOS devices from anywhere in the home.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.
