I needed my burner on my gas range fixed that wouldn't light for a Frigidaire range we bought a couple of years back. Rachel, who I initially worked with on the phone was great! She was clear on the pricing and noted the hourly rate, even though I being a bit of a curmudgeon and explained my reluctance to pay an hourly rate when sometimes the diagnosis and solution for appliance repair can take only a couple of minutes. She walked me through finding the model number on my appliance and set a time for a few days out to get the work done. She called and left a message when the technician would be on his way the morning of. Jeremy was a true professional from the moment he arrived. He literally found the issue and had it fixed within 15 minutes. He also took the time to show me how to address it should it come up again! I then told him about my dishwasher being noisy when it opens/shuts and he took some time to quiet it down for us a bit. I also learned while speaking to him that in addition to appliance repair, his company also did HVAC. I explained I needed a couple of things as far as furnace tuneup and a small project for my bathroom in addition to the appliance repair. He took the time to educate me on both the shape and condition of both my furnace and AC. Long story short, he only charged me the minimum for the hour he was here and I will absolutely hire again starting next week when they tune up and clean the panel on my furnace. A+ contractor!

I own and operate a Data Center in Kansas City and have worked with many Electrical and HVAC contractors. Robert has been by far the best contractor I have worked with. He is trustworthy, reliable and does great work. He designed and built my custom duct work as well as installing all our AC units at our new facility. He also does quarterly preventive maintenance for us as well.

I was very satisfied with the work that Donovan the owner of the company , did here at my apartment complex. I had several issues with the heating and cooling, he was here quickly to do the work, was very efficient at a reasonable cost, not to mention he has a polite personality.

We had two double windows replaced, a plate glass bathroom window replaced with an acrylic glass block window, and had a half moon window removed and replaced with lap siding on the exterior and sheetrock on the interior. The work was done quickly and expertly - could not have asked for a better first time experience with a private contractor! We highly recommend Marcus!

I needed a hole cored in a floor for conduit. Calvert was the only one to respond, and quickly. While they couldn't help, Calvert referred me to another company who does exactly what I need. I'll definitely go to Calvert Plumbing for my next plumbing project!

We were trying to get our house ready to sell and the air conditioner died. And since we knew our furnace was old and probably next, we decided to replace them both. What started out as a highly stresssful incident, turned out to be a really positive experience, thanks to the efforts of the team at R MECH Heating Plumbing and Cooling. Mike came out for an estimate and we really enjoyed talking with him. The rates were amazing and the no pressure attitude was refreshing. Most of all, the contract terms were above and beyond what we expected. Financing was arranged and workmen showed up on the appointed day. Everyone was courteous and efficient and when they left, we had a shiny, new ac and furnace, all within 4 days of first contact. We could tell a huge diifference right away with our new Lennox appliances. We would highly recommend R MECH Heating Cooling and Plumbing. This company is amazing. If you're looking for a company that genuinely strives to provide the best experience possible for the customer, then this is the company to go with.

Great experience- Joey was early and worked extremely efficiently. Could tell right away he wanted to find the cause of my AC issue and help me out. Every other pro on here was already trying to charge me extra before they even saw the unit. Joey was fast to the scene and definitely didn’t try to up charge me or get more work of out me. Super professional and highly talented/qualified. I will be calling Joey again in the future if I need any more help. I highly recommend going with Hill heating and cooling.

I can not say enough good things about Dave and Kelly's Heating and Cooling. On a Friday, holiday weekend, my furnace stopped working, I thought I was going to have to wait until Tuesday for help to arrive. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised when he showed up early Friday afternoon. He took care of the problem, was professional, polite and even had a treat for my dog. You cannot go wrong when you call Dave and Kellys Heating and Cooling!

I was needing a fan motor installed. Allen's Service was able to diagnose the problem and give me option. After going over all the options we had a 22yr old furnace and it didn't make sense to put money into it when it was already past it's life expectancy. I learn the old furnace cost me more to run also. Thank you Allen's Service you were on time, knowledgeable, polite, great service, great price, and you cleaned everything up !!! You guys are great!!! I will definitely use you again.

We had AC issue and the technician was very informative and fixed problem right away. We appreciated his explanation of what we needed and why. We found them to be very reasonably priced compared to other higher quotes.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
