RC came to our house to measure our porch and sent us an estimate that evening. He also meet us at the hardware store so we could pick out exactly what we wanted and offered suggestions on how to keep our costs low. He finished our porch railing in two days. I'm very satisfied with his services.

Evan did a fantastic, highly professional job of replacing our privacy fence. He totally transformed the look of our yard with the new fence, and added a block retaining wall to take place of rocks stacked up to keep one neighbors yard from washing into ours, as it is significantly higher. He had the vision to do the fence, wall, and some ground work in such a way as to increase privacy, provide a place to plant flowers, and create proper drainage. He reused some of the flat rocks to create a walkway so we can water our flowers when it's dry, and provide that extra drainage when we have more rain then you can shake a stick at. And mom can still enjoy some of "her rocks" this way. The drainage work performed to a tee as we since had 5" of rain in a short amount of time, and all that water moved away. He also replaced the concrete footings on our 30+ year old carport, as the carport is still in pretty good shape considering its age. He does excellent work and we've received nothing but compliments from everyone. I highly recommend Evan and aWARDable Maintenance.

Jared responded within 1 day to our post and came out the next day to give us a bid. We discussed our project, he too measurements then sat on our bench, typed up the quote and then printed it right there. We hired Jared re-pour a floor that we removed on our back porch as well as a new concrete patio and 80 feet of sidewalk. The porch floor had to be a specific depth to allow for installation of the new door as we had a tight tolerance between floor and header. It was a perfect fit and the finish work was nice enough to just stain and seal. Jared is very picky and driven to make customer happy. We hit the rainy days of September right after we started, which caused some delays because it was too muddy for his equipment to haul the concrete from the truck to the side of the house. There were some ruts created in the yard, naturally, due to the rain. However, he and his crew worked to smooth it out as best as possible for as wet as it was and put down grass seed and straw. We were in a rush to get it all completed due to a wedding scheduled at our house the end of September. Jared hauled off our demolition debris along with the old concrete which was very kind and something he did not have to do. He also accomodated my request to modify the forms slightly before the final pour. We were very pleased with the job and would recommend Jared and Son Scapes for anyone needing concrete work. We will be contacting him again when it's time to build a new garage.

I am a very satisfied customer. Brett Hudson and his small but mighty crew worked nearly every day, except Sundays (even worked the Fourth of July) to build a beautiful deck. I have told him he could use us as a reference and/or bring by customers for a look at his masterpiece.

Quincy and his team built a large enclosed deck using EZ Screen windows. The deck is now my favorite room, and the work was outstanding. Quincy had great design ideas, and the team was reliable, timely, and totally quality-oriented. They communicated well throughout the project, kept the work area clean, and more than met their commitments. I highly recommend Northpoint for your construction needs.

Josh was outstanding in his response time, cost, and quality of the project. We've had the screened in porch two days and we've spent both days in it. Couldn't be happier with our experience.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
