Introduction: As a teacher with professional training and experience, I guide my students to play expressively and intelligently from the earliest levels. I believe that even beginners deserve excellence as they grow their skill and love for making music! Three of my children have studied under Mrs. Toews since 2004. She started with my older son in 8th grade, and the two younger children started when they were in 1st or 2nd grade. She stresses good habits and techniques early on, so her students have a good foundation to build on. She has high expectations for her students, and is very encouraging to help them meet them. She is strict about practicing, but she also rewards the students for practicing well. She has regular recitals, as well as group lessons, and she has her students participate in local competitions as they are able. My youngest is going into 11th grade. She has progressed extremely well under Deborah's training. It has been a joy to have my children in her studio. Her studio is in a separate room in her home, and she does not take calls or do other things during lessons. She has always been punctual. My husband and I feel we have made a very wise investment by having her for our children's piano teacher.

Mrs. Toews is a splendid piano teacher. Her curriculum is incredibly well-rounded, engaging the student on many fronts. She also works with the personality of the student, allowing for the ambitious or training for the lifelong pleasure of knowing and playing music. She includes auditions on regional and state levels, if desired, along with a Christmas and spring recitals. And she encourages the music progressions testing in the spring to allow parents as well as children to understand their progress. I highly recommend her!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Monthly tuition is $110 for weekly 45 minute private lessons. There is no registration fee however students pay for actual cost of books purchased. No extra fees for recitals however advanced students may choose to participate in local and regional auditions for nominal fees.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The process begins by the student (and parent, if student is a child or teen) meeting with me to discuss the student's goals and my teaching philosophy and methods. Details of my business policy are outlined at this time. This is a free consultation. If we agree that our goals are compatible a weekly lesson time is established. Lessons are tailored to individual needs and goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education which included courses in piano pedagogy. To stay current, I frequently attend workshops and conventions. I also collaborate with teachers in person and online to share ideas. I am a board member for the Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association.
