In my opinion, image is everything -- that's why I strive not just to take pictures, but to create images. Working with a number of small businesses over the past few years I have seen quality images make the difference between no sales and plentiful sales; typical profit margins and exciting ones; one time customers and repeats. Whether you're a business looking to boost your marketing efforts or an individual looking to create memories my advice is this: look for someone who you think can create the image you want, then start talking.
