- What types of customers have you worked with?
When I made the bold decision to open up my own small business accounting firm, I knew I wanted to have a business name that would not leave any potential clients struggling to ascertain what in the world my business was in the business of doing. Therefore, after a bit more thought & reflection, I determined that "Williams Tax, Accounting, & Financial Services" was a very suiting, professional sounding, name for my firm that I felt 99% of individuals would have no trouble whatsoever deducing what exactly I was in the business of doing. Whether my selection of a DBA for my business accomplished this or not, it is worth noting that there are certain common types of services that I provide to the majority of my clients, & which rank as the most popular of all the service offerings my firm currently has listed on its menu. In descending order, based upon Gross Revenue, the most common types of services I perform for my clients include: 1) Individual Tax Preparation Services (1040 + State Return + Local Return {if applicable} + e-File Services, 2) Monthly Bookkeeping Services (excluding payroll) for small businesses & high net-worth individuals, 3) Monthly Bookkeeping Services (including payroll) for small businesses & high net-worth individuals, 4) Year-end Compilation of Financial Statements for small businesses (e.g., Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow Statement, & Statement of Retained Earnings, as well as all necessary & associated Footnotes & Disclosures) **WE PROVIDE NO OPINION ON THE STATEMENTS** 5) Small Business Tax Return Preparation (e.g., Schedule C of 1040, 1065, 1120S, & 1120) 6) Full Service Accounting & Bookkeeping for small businesses that have outsourced entire accounting function to my firm (i.e., record daily journal entries, monitor & report on A/R & A/P, process payroll & timely file forms with applicable government agencies, monitor material accounts via analytical procedures to note large fluctuations in balances & activity, reconcile key General Ledger accounts, perform closing procedures at year-end in advance of the preparation of the financial statements. 7) Private Investigative Services & Mystery Shopping are two divergent yet similar services that I have recently added as part of my overall service offerings. The PI Services I perform for 1 outside company on a periodic basis, which are confidential in nature. I am also a Certified Mystery Shopper with the MSPA and am registered with 20+ MSP's (Mystery Shopping Provider's) who engage me as an Independent Contractor to primarily conduct HR type evaluations of employees at large companies while I am undercover. 8) Private Tutoring Services for wide variety of students of all ages from 1st - 12th Grade, & all the way up to Graduate level students. The subject areas I tutor in are almost as diverse as the ages of the students I tutor; however, I primarily specialize in Accounting, Finance, Algebra, Statistics, Writing, Microsoft Office, History, & many other disciplines. 9) Compliance Audits I perform for larger institutions as an independent contractor whereby I will receive project guidelines from a representative of the respective company who will inform me of the deliverables expected of me, as well as the deadline for submission of the assignment. Similar to mystery shopping, these assignments are generally highly focuses on the evaluation of a company's employees, services, & products, but to a much higher & scrutinized level than a typical mystery shop. 10. Business Consulting & Other Financial Services is the area that I hope to see the largest % growth in year over year, as I desire each of the major service offerings listed above at the top of the list to evolve over time. More specifically, instead of providing tax preparation services to individuals & small businesses, I would like to gradually shift more to providing tax consulting & planning services to my clients instead of merely preparing their returns. Another good example relates to the monthly bookkeeping services I provide to clients. I would like to shift away from this vanilla service type of offering by encompassing more business consulting services implemented with the bookkeeping services, which might manifest themselves in the form of forecasting & benchmarking techniques used & compared across my clients industry to offer him extra value-added data enabling him to see the areas & key metrics (e.g., A/R Turnover, quick ratio, etc.) that his/her company stacks up well against the competition on, & conversely, those areas that are in need of substantial improvement.
