Jodie is great, she has been training not only my pup, Reggie, but also training us how to understand him, and make sure he understands what we want from him. He is always excited to see her show up and enjoys his training sessions. She has worked with us to address issues and concerns specific to Reggie.

I cannot say enough fabulous things about the Brilliant and Wonderful Canine Professor!! I adopted a very fearful rescue about a year ago while in Houston. He did very well with my family there, so when I would travel he stayed at one of my family member's houses - parents/sister/cousins, he did fine with all of them. But! He'd had a long time to get to know them AND he'd met them immediately after being adopted. When I moved here to Louisville, he became very reactive with strangers and would not let anyone near our house. Cherie patiently worked with us for over three months to slowly build up confidence and trust with Blanco. Not only does he let her in the house now, but he is so excited to see her when she comes to take him for walks! I was even able to go on a week-long trip back to Houston for my sister's birthday!! Usually when I come home, Blanco's anxiety and reactivity are much worse than before my trip, but this time, he is even calmer and happier than he was when I left town!! I'm so happy to know that I can take stress-free trips (for both of us!). I highly recommend Cherie as both a trainer and a dog sitter/walker and I can promise you she will change your and your pup's lives!!

I needed someone to help my elderly mother manage care for the little elderly pug that was my dad's dog. My dad passed away in April and my mother is still having trouble coping with her new responsibilities. I did not want my dad's dog to go to rescue so I looked for a pet sitter to help out. Kevin answered my post. He not only was compassionate for my mother but he was more than willing to come by late in the evening to give my dad's dog her meds and take her outside. He loves the pug and she loves him. He is reliable, priced his services reasonably and is helping us keep my dad's little dog in her home. Thanks, Kevin!

I was given K9 Trainology’s number after taking my dog to two different Louisville trainers. The results have been incredible! I would recommend them highly. They are not the cheapest but if I would not have hired the first two trainers that did not fix my dogs behavior I would have actually saved money hiring them the first time. I started to think my dog would never be able to go places and be locked away when guests arrived at the house. Thank you all so much for helping me and Jack.

Tracy is a vital part of keeping my family happy and healthy. She walks Lana, my autistic child's dog- 2 times/ day... if I need her a third time because of work or if my son is sick or for any reason, she's there if at all able.. Lana gets full 30 minute walks, Tracy runs her, watches her overall health/ stool/ weight. Tracy has also helped us through GI CRISIS! She has an invested personal interest in animals and is very very knowledgeable about holistic methods of treating animals. I'm sure I've saved up to $1 K in vet bills by trying Tracy's recommendations, or the recipes she has made herself for Lana's sensitive tummy. I get pictures of Lana playing and having fun on walks. There's nothing better than having NO worries about your animal who's home alone. and, its even better to arrive home to a dog who is well exercised, happy, and just ready to see you. Lana got a stuffed heart for Valentine's day, a green rope that mimicks her favorite toy that she tore up, and a tire toy with little bones on it with a rope attached. Tracy knows what she likes, needs, and is aware of subtle or big changes in Lana... when my mind may be too occupied with work or my son to notice. I could write a book. My happy healthy fit, well exercised dog is in good condition daily to love my son. That's the most important part. I had tried 1 service before.. it was business, it was double the price, and it was half the time spent. It was out of necessity when I had the flu, but it was a polar opposite experience. Last, I trust Tracy 100%. She has a key, is respectful of space, time.. she walks Lana set times and cleans her up after walks and fills her water bowl. I may be asleep on my day off, Tracy is quiet yet lets herself be known. Or, I may bombard Tracy:) with questions about dog issues, etc. Though I don't abuse it and I appreciate it- she's up for the task because she loves animals. Try it..just once (if you can get on her schedule). If you get on her schedule, don't be stupid enough to get off! It's better than gold. I'll never go back (unless I buy 20 acres)... lol, sorry Tracy. You could still consult in place of the vet!

My experience with good manners dog training was excellent. Pat took the time to show me the reasons behind my dogs behavior, and how I can correct them on my own. I have a hyper golden doodle that bounced like tigger, and made it very difficult to walk around my house. People were afraid to walk down my steps because he is 75lbs and would run up and down the steps when someone was using them. Now, thanks to pat, buddy is much calmer and I know how to get him to Calm and sit when he gets two excited. My family are a lot happier about coming over now.. I would recommend good manners dog training to anyone, pat is fantastic.

Courtney was my house and dog sitter for many years until I moved out of state. I miss her!! She is so sweet, respectful, dependable and LOVES fur babies! My animals (3 dogs and 2 cats) were always so happy to see her and she always updated me on how they were doing when I was away. One of my dogs required daily medicine and she had no problem making sure she got it on time everyday! Courtney was always available, whether I was gone for 2 days or 2 weeks! Courtney always made sure my house was nice and clean for my arrival home! I highly recommend Courtney for house/pet sitting!

We have a very difficult chihuahua with a sweet side and, unfortunately, an aggressive side. We couldn’t bathe, brush, or trim his nails without being bitten (more than once!). We had sought help from another trainer with no luck and were at a point where we thought nothing could help, After board and train with Tyler and The Working Pup, we can handle our tough guy with no problems. Tyler worked around our schedule and our many needs, answered our NUMEROUS questions patiently, and gave us back a dog who can be handled without showing aggression. We are forever thankful!!! We only wish he trained cats as well :)

I can not articulate how absolutely amazing Rosemarie (K9 THIS) was. After speaking on the phone and visiting with several other trainers in the area I was the most impressed and comfortable with Rosemarie. She utilized the most humane positive professional methods to exhibit exceptional obedience in my german shepherd puppy. Not only did she train my puppy but she utilized the same patience and professionalism to train ME how to continue training my pup! I believe that her real life experience as a dog handler assisting our military with her dog handling skills gives her credentials and world class experience that I have not seen elsewhere! I was very pleased and HIGHLY RECOMMEND her to anyone looking for a highly skilled, caring dog trainer. I was most impressed by her ability to get faster and better results without utilizing shock collars, choke collars or abusive discipline while training my puppy. It takes an amazingly skilled professional to use the all positive methods that I witnessed and get the results that she provided! I am only surprised that my german shepherd didnt write this review himself by the time she left our home. Absolutely Highly Recommended!

We decided to hire a dog trainer when our dog Buddy would roam our property and not come inside when we wanted him to. He always wanders too close to the road and we were afraid he would get hit by a car. Melaney was very professional and took the time to always answer all of our questions. We are very happy with Buddy's progress and the peace of mind we have when he is outside. We would recommend Melaney to anyone needing a dog trainer.

Cindy has cared for my three dogs on more than one occasion. One of our dogs is up in years and has a few health issues so we no longer want to leave him at a boarding kennel. We prefer for the dogs to stay together at home when we travel. Cindy takes such good care of my fur babies and they are always happy to see her. Cindy loves on our fur babies and keeps them well fed and brushed. We are relieved to know our dogs are safe and happy with Ms. Cindy while we are away from the pack.

Tonya came to my home to assist with a groom on a dog I am doing home hospice with that I can no longer take to a shop. She was kind and patient with him as he is also recently blind. She took her time and let him get comfortable and the groom itself was very complete. He looks great and is MUCH more comfortable and I can now easily keep him clean through this process. Thank you Tonya for your help with my baby! He felt better almost immediately!

Touched base about the appointment in advance? Check. Does the job in the convenience of your home? CHECK Friendly? Check. Walked my dog around the neighborhood to help dog blow off steam? Check. Brushed dog's teeth? Check Cleaned dog's ears? Check Used shampoo AND conditioner? Check Thorough brushing all over? Check Nails trimmed? Check Gave dog little milk bones to make the experience as pleasant as possible? Check. You can sit and chat with her the whole time, but she also brings ear phones and music for those people who don't feel like interacting with their groomer. That all said! The hair cut for my shih tzu was not excellent. I think it was a combination of things though; she'd spent time being so thorough on the rest of it, I think my dog was getting tired of being messed with. When she left, she had been here for 3 hours, so it wasn't for lack of effort. Also, the bulk of the reason I'd hired her WAS because my shih tzu was being difficult even when it came to just basic brushing sometimes. The groomer's trimming kit being better would have helped, and that holding harness setup would have helped a lot as well. So, I can't entirely blame the non excellent cut just on the groomer when my dog is at least half to blame. Difficult dogs will always be in a groomer's future, though, so it would be better if she came better prepared for that. I would hire her AGAIN for "all but the hair cut" service. I'd give her another shot even on that when she upgrades her trim kit and brings the harness stand as well.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
