Arthur Douglas, New Orleans, LA Window Replacement Thank you Mr. Duncan for doing a fantastic job. Mr. Duncan puts the pro in professional. He took out my existing window. Saved me tons of money by installing a 36 by 52 window instead of the 36 by 51 and 1/2 (Uneven dimensions means special order). He sealed the gaps in my brick. He put a never rot barrier around my window and a silicone seal that blends straight in ( Wonderful work I still don't know where the silicone is). He transformed the new construction window that I bought into a replacement window (saving me more money). He chalked my existing window frame and filled in all the holes. And that's not all folks. His clean up was excellent. You would have not know work was done unless I told you. He carries all his tools and shows up early. Did I mention he shows up early? And the best part is he is very knowledgeable and creative. Everything you need into one. I highly recommend Mr. Duncan for any home improvement needs. P.S. Mr. Duncan I have more projects waiting on you!

We had rotten wood replaced on outside window sills, door and under roof of our home. Tom also tacked down the siding that was starting to warp and buckle up and installed a ceiling fan in my daughters room. He even fixed a broken cabinet in my kitchen thay i broke by using improperly. He was kind, fair, neat and easy to talk to. He even took the time to help show me what i could do in the future to try and maintain the outside a little better!! Tom is the best!!

I hired Mr. Rodrick and his crew to repair termite damage in my kitchen and several repairs outside. He was very thorough, neat and always there when promised. He was able to squeeze me in during the holidays when I had time off. They replaced rotten soffit and facia boards around my house, cleaned and repaired my gutters, repainted all of it, and added some columns on my carport. As it turned out, the damage from the termites was much worse than we thought. The entire wall had to be ripped out, window re-framed, cabinet taken down, new sheetrock and painting. I spent more money than I wanted, but we couldn't see the damage without opening the wall. For all the work they did, the price was right. I would definitely re-hire this company for any future work needed.

I am looking forward to amending this review if we can get our renovation finished. The biggest problem started when the 3rd floor addition was not tarped properly and it rained on first floor which is our living and dining room. So, we had to completely clear those rooms out. Which has led to us only being able to live in two rooms of our house. They treated their mess up like another part of the renovation and they STILL have not replaced the floors NOR hooked up the AC to the be other side of the house. My kitchen is literally Hell’s Kitchen. With two small kids, who both finish school this week, I don’t think I have to tell you how hard it is to not have even the part of the house that WAS supposed to be functional throughout the renovation working. See photos. Also, my yard is still a mess. Full of rusty nails and a rusty saw blade and the dumpster that hasn’t been taken away yet. So can’t send the kids outside. Bill didn’t include the windows as part of our estimate - so be aware of that. I find that fascinating. He also is claiming not to “remember” the original plans to demolish the stairs and rebuild them - a $5000 part of the renovation - even after haggling with us about windows - he said “he doesn’t remember” that the stairs were part of the estimate. I would like that off the top of the price. So- I sincerely look forward to amending this review if they can get their stuff together and finish this up. As a counter to the negativity - the upstairs work is beautiful.

Garcia Remodeling Construction are punctual, diligent, and extremely thorough. We have an old 100 year old shotgun home and every single one of our windows leaked when it rained, letting water into the walls and creating horrendous mold inside and outside of the walls. Erix inspected all our windows and understood the problems immediately. Within a week he provided an estimate and we scheduled a start date for the project, which included fixing and sealing the windows and opening up our walls to remove and replace all the damaged wood and insulation. Erix and his colleagues took great care throughout the project, including moving and covering all our belongings to limit dust from the work. Most impressive is one would never know that our walls had to be cut open and replaced around the windows. They did an impeccable job spackling, painting, etc. We have peace of mind now, whenever it rains, that our house is completely sealed from the elements, and that we don't have to worry about mold any longer. I highly recommend Garcia Remodeling.

My 20 year old AC/Heat unit needed to be replaced. During the 3 weeks my old AC/Heat unit was broken, I obtained 7 estimates from various local companies. My 7th and final estimate was from Sears. Travis Smith was my Sales Project Consultant. Of all the estimates that I received, Travis' presentation and information provided me with an excellent understanding of the history, integrity, and value of Sears and its products. He was not a pushy salesman and truly helped me to understand everything I needed to know about my AC/Heat needs. I was well informed by Charles Fernandez as to the status of my installation. He also followed up once the installation was complete to assure that the project was completed to my satisfaction. The installer Troy arrived as promised and immediately started the project. Him and his assistant were courteous, informative, and diligent and completed my AC/Heat installation in the time frame promised. I would highly recommend Sears Home Improvement to anyone seeking home improvements.

Morgan did great work in the bathroom re-tiling our floor, installing new shower doors and refinishing the molding in our space. His quality is excellent. My only complaint or advice is to nail down the timeline and completion date with him. Our project took a quite a bit longer than we wanted. Having said that we are certainly very pleased with the finished product.

Amanda performed interior design and construction services for our new house design and build. She has an uncanny ability to sense what your design wishes are and translate them into executable prints. She totally designed our kitchen and bath layouts complete with cabinet layouts, appliance, and plumbing choices. Everything fit and worked out beautifully from an aesthetic and functional view even down to the choice of paint colors. Amanda's construction crews installed flooring, did painting, and installed some incidentals such as a gas fireplace. All was to our complete satisfaction. Not to be overlooked in Amanda's strengths is her ability to provide creative solutions. We are into cooking and Amanda developed a kitchen design that included two full size ovens with a cook top between. The cooktop is "sunken" relative to the ovens providing a unique custom design. We also had an architectural design problem with two corner windows over the kitchen sink. Due to the roof line, the windows would have been too high to see out of. She came up with an idea of a full size garden window on the side without roof line problems and a reflective mirror on the other. Hence, we have the desired view with what appears to be two full sized windows. Bottom line is that we recommend her services highly. She is a talented creative designer.

Adam did an outstanding job installing a skylight. I needed it done in a short time frame and Adam took care of it on a Sunday after rainy weather passed during the week. He did a very professional job. I will definitely hire him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
