I am very pleased with the landscaping services that David provided. He immediately answered my emails and was very prompt returning with a quote. He worked around my schedule and preferred meeting face-to-face and walking through what the landscaping could provide in lieu of emails -- a rare quality these days. The yard looks 110% better and I have already received compliments from 3-4 neighbors. I bought a condo in December and the previous owners had done nothing with the yard and the condo had cut a pine tree, ground the root, and left the chopped pine in the yard. David removed the pile of pine chippings, he removed all existing beds, he enlarged the beds, planted new bushes, trees, and flowers, laid a new lawn, and installed a sprinkler system on a timer. In the back yard he put paving stones in the back patio area to create a little courtyard and planted jasmine around the back fence. I was so pleased that I will continue to use his services for monthly maintenance as I live overseas part of the year. I would highly recommend his services to anyone.

Russell Thames Dont walk, but run to get Dennis and Dennis on your team for lawn care. I was using another sevice and my grass looked like a Napham Commercial. Now it looks like heaven: green, full and weedless. They take care of your trees and flower beds also.If they only did child care.

We recently bought a house in LA, and the previous owners pretty much just got up and left. The grass around the property was almost 10" high, and because we are military, our household goods would not be delivered for some time. Str8 to U Lawn Services offered to come out the same day I requested a quote and did an AMAZING job! They drove by the property to check out the damage and gave us a fair quote. They spent a lot of time working on the front back yards and probably bit off more than they wanted, but never complained and didn't try to charge us more. Once we get settled, we will definitely use them more for frequent lawn care.

My garden needed a complete overhaul. New mulch, fresh flowers, shrubs trimmed, weeding, and a general cleanup of my garden to get ready for summer entertaining. Parker from Louisiana Land Art came out and gave me a quote, and after comparing with 2 other companies I chose them to do the job. He was very clean cut and professional and very personable. The job took 1 day and he surprised me with a free power wash of my driveway! I will definitely use his services again as he was very thorough and I truly appreciated them cleaning up after themselves.

Francis came out to my property within 30 minutes of putting out the initial job posting. He was very helpful when it came to the decision of what I should do to improve the quality of my front yard. They mowed the lawn, planted new flowers and spread mulch that I supplied, trimmed down overgrown weeds, and also removed a tree. I was very impressed with the service and will probably use them again in the future.

Nick Glover's customer service is all about the customer. 95% of my calls were answered directly by Nick Glover - not much time spent waiting on return calls. He worked extremely hard to accomplish all that I needed by my deadline, even with non-stop rainy weather. On my open lot, he cut weeds and grass that were over 2' tall, pulled out very tough vines growing into a cyclone fence, and hauled away all debris, including large tree limbs. His price point on all services is very reasonable. He is very responsive and easy to communicate with, and I will now use him on a regular basis. I highly recommend Glovers Tree Service.

Quick quote - very fair pricing. I appreciate the call from the owner to discuss my request and what would look best. The guys showed up on time. They made quick work of the job and cleaned up better than any other tree company I have hired. I will definitely be calling them in the future. Thanks Chris & Crew!

This was the second time I have hired Glover's Tree Service--last year for tree cutting/trimming, and last week, for general landscape maintenance. Nick removed and replaced dead shrubs and added soil to my front gardens and lawn; and he did a freeze cleanup in my back gardens. Nick was polite, knowledgeable, and did the work quickly. He is very considerate and strives to make his customers happy. I will use his services again in the future.

I would definitely use C's for any tree needs in the future, and would highly recommend them to anyone that is looking for tree trimming and/or tree removal. We had an extremely large job, with a lot of trees large and small, and Trent and his crew did an exceptional job. They were punctual, stuck to the original quote, very professional, and even did a great job with clean up (which is hard to find). Can't recommend them enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
