Gianni Palermo and his Quality 4 Less LLC: Extremely high quality work, very fairly priced, with honesty being Gianni's greatest asset, all of which were on display in his work at my residence in July 2014 in laying concrete with a slate tile border on an inclined walkway up to my front door and on sidewalk by driveway, pressure washing outside of house, sidewalk and driveway, installing tiles in my bath/shower from shower head level extending to ceiling, and installing a new toilet seat. I will be recommending him to numerous people for remodeling projects in the residence. Therefore, 5 stars with a plus, for not only "outstanding" but also "superlative". Richard L. Arthur Douglas, New Orleans, LA Window Replacement Thank you Mr. Duncan for doing a fantastic job. Mr. Duncan puts the pro in professional. He took out my existing window. Saved me tons of money by installing a 36 by 52 window instead of the 36 by 51 and 1/2 (Uneven dimensions means special order). He sealed the gaps in my brick. He put a never rot barrier around my window and a silicone seal that blends straight in ( Wonderful work I still don't know where the silicone is). He transformed the new construction window that I bought into a replacement window (saving me more money). He chalked my existing window frame and filled in all the holes. And that's not all folks. His clean up was excellent. You would have not know work was done unless I told you. He carries all his tools and shows up early. Did I mention he shows up early? And the best part is he is very knowledgeable and creative. Everything you need into one. I highly recommend Mr. Duncan for any home improvement needs. P.S. Mr. Duncan I have more projects waiting on you!

Tom Fairholm has done a lot of work on my house for several years including putting on a new roof after rebuilding (pitching) a part on the back of the house roof that was flat, building & installing kitchen cabinets, building & installing storm shutters, removed doorways & walls to open up kitchen/laundry room area, putting up drywall, painting and minor plumbing work to name a few. He built & installed exterior stairs & handrail for my daughter-in-law and also turned an open area in her house into a bedroom. I have been very pleased with his skill and professionalism and his trustworthiness. I highly recommend him.

An absolutely wonderful job from start to finish! Marcelo was super nice about explaining to me (a complete idiot about anything home-related) each step of the process for my new driveway. He put everything in writing and walked me through it all. The driveways looks fantastic and I'll be talking with him soon about other projects. Can't say enough about how great it was to work with Bilt-Rite!

I am looking forward to amending this review if we can get our renovation finished. The biggest problem started when the 3rd floor addition was not tarped properly and it rained on first floor which is our living and dining room. So, we had to completely clear those rooms out. Which has led to us only being able to live in two rooms of our house. They treated their mess up like another part of the renovation and they STILL have not replaced the floors NOR hooked up the AC to the be other side of the house. My kitchen is literally Hell’s Kitchen. With two small kids, who both finish school this week, I don’t think I have to tell you how hard it is to not have even the part of the house that WAS supposed to be functional throughout the renovation working. See photos. Also, my yard is still a mess. Full of rusty nails and a rusty saw blade and the dumpster that hasn’t been taken away yet. So can’t send the kids outside. Bill didn’t include the windows as part of our estimate - so be aware of that. I find that fascinating. He also is claiming not to “remember” the original plans to demolish the stairs and rebuild them - a $5000 part of the renovation - even after haggling with us about windows - he said “he doesn’t remember” that the stairs were part of the estimate. I would like that off the top of the price. So- I sincerely look forward to amending this review if they can get their stuff together and finish this up. As a counter to the negativity - the upstairs work is beautiful.

I truly enjoyed working with this family team and we have more projects on the horizon. The first project we completed together was a restoration of four 100-year-old, 15ft windows - a task which many other contractors refused to even quote because it is so specialized. The Barilleau team was knowledgeable, creative, timely, and reasonably priced. I have already recommended them to friends and neighbors.

Garcia Remodeling Construction are punctual, diligent, and extremely thorough. We have an old 100 year old shotgun home and every single one of our windows leaked when it rained, letting water into the walls and creating horrendous mold inside and outside of the walls. Erix inspected all our windows and understood the problems immediately. Within a week he provided an estimate and we scheduled a start date for the project, which included fixing and sealing the windows and opening up our walls to remove and replace all the damaged wood and insulation. Erix and his colleagues took great care throughout the project, including moving and covering all our belongings to limit dust from the work. Most impressive is one would never know that our walls had to be cut open and replaced around the windows. They did an impeccable job spackling, painting, etc. We have peace of mind now, whenever it rains, that our house is completely sealed from the elements, and that we don't have to worry about mold any longer. I highly recommend Garcia Remodeling.

I couldn't envision a better contractor. Cesar completed the total rehab of a home I purchased that was in foreclosure. The house was in terrible condition and needed to be gutted to the studs. All new utilities were installed. I've been living in the home for the past 7 months and I still struggle to find issues with the work that was completed. Cesar was able to understand my renovation budget, acknowledge my vision of the completed project, manage my expectations of what could be completed with my budget (let's be honest...we all have expensive tastes until we get to the cash register lol), and was dedicated to providing quality craftsmanship. Cesar was always accessible to reach by phone, answered any question I had, and was willing to provide insight when I was contemplating decisions that I would probably regret after the project was completed. I'd recommend Cesar to anyone I hear in need of a contractor. I've included a few before and after pics to illustrate his work.

Johanna and Julio are truly amazing. They contacted me immediately , went to the job site same day to discuss pricing and procedures. The following day, they went to the job site and completed the work in just a few hours. Johanna, kept me informed every step of the way by texting me and status photos from start to finish. After 3 months, and 3 different contractors flaking out, it is so refreshing to know that good people do actually exist. I will call on Johanna and Julio for my next project. They took the hassle and confusion completely away from me.

Southern Pride Roofing did an excellent job installing our new roof. Roofing is an inherently messy job, however, our customer rep (Chris) did an excellent job of monitoring. Our new roof looks great and they did a nice job on the clean up following. I'd use them again for my roofing needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
