ER Construction is by far the best company we have ever had do work on our home. We have had some horrible experiences in the past with contractors who didn't show up, finish work promised, were sloppy and rude. ER Construction has finished all the work in our 1850 colonial and it has surpassed our expectations. The painting, floor refinishing, ceiling repair, and floor installation has been incredible and we are having them paint the exterior as well. We are very happy and satisfied and are recommending them to everyone we know!

Had a great experience working with Felipe and FW Home Improvement! They performed a wide variety of work ranging from painting, sliding door/cabinet repairs, light carpentry (trim repair and replace rotted woodwork at doorway), gutter cleaning and a few other items as well. Price was competitive and the work was done professionally and with attention to detail. Couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Would definitely call again for future handyman work! Thanks FW!

They vendor was prepared. Once the repair was completed, my husband was very pleased. I would recommend this vendor and would hire them again.

We just completed a full basement (from the studs) renovation with Eduardo and we couldn't be more impressed with the BBC team. The quality of work for the price can't be beaten and Eduardo and his subs worked hard to meet our tight deadline without compromising quality. Eduardo is knowledgable and trustworthy and professional while he and his team are very considerate and thoughtful. We would highly recommend Boston Best Construction and have our next renovation project lined up with them already!

We had a pipe freeze and break in our home and Ralph came and discussed solutions for the repair. His knowledge and expertise was above and beyond our expectations. We were not disappointed in the least. He quoted the scope of the job from beginning to end, performed the service faster than anticipated, and brought the project in under budget. My wife and I were extremely pleased with the quality of work, his attention to detail, promptness in starting and finishing the work, and the cleanliness of our home during the process. I would recommend KZM Home Improvement to anyone who needs quality work done by a professional outfit. We will be using them again.

RJ Development did a great job on our electrical needs in an attic that had very little power. Pricing was fair and the job was done same day when he came to quote it. He worked hard until the job was done into the night and completed everything he said he'd do. After happily wiring and hanging 2 large light fixtures and adding several electrical outlets, we were very pleased with his work and had him return form another larger project a few weeks later to include running another circuit for more power (from basement to attic!) and installing two floorboard heaters. He worked and did it all in a day and did a professional job that works great and is discreet in keeping with the rustic decor. Very fairly priced and worked quietly and consistently until the job was complete. We're happy with our project and would hire again. Definitely recommend.

Hired Mr. Scarpaci to fix a nuisance leak in our basement. He returned our calls and came when he promised. After the work was done, we still had a small leak, not as bad as before, and called him back since his work is guaranteed. He said we should not have any water at all and he sent out another team to do further work. They repaired the area again. We await another storm to test the repair work but I doubt it will be a further problem.

I was preparing my house for sale and I needed a number of repairs made to boost my sale price. I hired Mr. Paolino to rebuild and paint my front porch, repair my concrete walkway and assess and repair my roof and my chimney. All of these projects were completed on budget and within my tight time frame. They were in and out and left my property clean for my showings.

I was a reluctant to hire off of Thumbtack. But I had a situation that I had to move fast on in a rental unit. I hired Daniel to redo a bathroom and kitchen and oversee related repairs work such as electrical and plumbing. Daniel and his small crew did excellent work and were always reliable and easy to work with. In my case I did not have a lot of time to manage every detail of the improvements. Daniel and his crew could handle unexpected problems and took great pride in their excellent craftsmanship. They did excellent carpentry, painting, and door hanging. My place went from looking totally beat up and tired to looking great. In short I would definitely recommend Daniel and his crew for any remodel or repair. I have already asked him to look at another job for me at a different location. I will be recommending Daniel without hesitation to anyone that asks for a referral. Anyone can feel free to contact me in private for a referral.

These guys were great. We used them for a basement remodel. They were very communicative. Always keep me informed of when the would be there and what they were doing. The job took a few weeks and they always told me when they would be returning. And they did. They really cared about achieving the results we wanted. Even when we went back and forth on what we wanted to do. They were super flexible with us. If you're reading this review, you are considering hiring them. Stop considering, and hire them. You will not regret it. I certainly didnt.

Stan came and fixed a rotted basement sill and cracked floor joist. He went out of his way to readjust his schedule because we were on a time crunch to get some work done prior to a home inspection. The work was completed in a timely manner and the cost was more than fair. I would recommend him to family and call him in the future for any other work that we might need done.

I would highly recommend North East Water Remediation as they went above and beyond! They informed me of all my options along the way. Tom took the time to explain each step and ensure my understanding. He also made sure I got the best bang for my buck with my insurance company. My house endured broken pipes which flooded and damaged my basement. I hired him for both the clean up AND fix up. What quality work, thank you!

Marco was very helpful, flexible and clearly explains every step in the process. His team already helped us on two other projects afterwards. We strongly recommend Bilmar Construction for your project.

I have been using KOD for repairs to my apartments for over a year now. They have work both inside and outside my buildings, including drywall, electric, bathroom renovation, window replacement, roofing and siding. The quality of the work has always been excellent, and completed on schedule. They have been happy to work around the tenants' schedule as needed. The cost have always been within the initial estimate.

We had a water pipe burst in our basement causing severe flooding. I contracted the repair work to Lowell Restorations (Raymond Leduc). He did a great job fixing all the water damage and made sure there wouldn’t be any mold problem. They are reliable and completed their work within my budget and time. They also pointed out some pre-existing issues that had caused moisture to seep through the cemented structure and caused damage to the wood and sheet rock. I strongly recommend this company for any water damage restoration.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How do you get rid of mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring and important part of our ecosystem. That said, excessive mold can actually be hazardous to your health. Mold remediation is usually the best strategy to get rid of unhealthy levels of mold in your home or office. If you’re not comfortable working with mold or the area is larger than 10 square feet (3 feet by 3 feet), it is highly recommended to hire a mold remediation professional to resolve the problem. However, if you’re DIY-savvy, don’t have any health risks, and are not freaked out by mold, the EPA gives homeowners the greenlight to clean mold areas that are less than 10 square feet. Here are some EPA-recommended DIY cleaning tips:

  • Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
  • Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
  • Throw away absorbent or porous materials (like ceiling tiles and carpet) if they become moldy.
  • Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
  • Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
  • If you are unsure about how to clean an item (art, fine furniture, etc.) consult a reputable specialist affiliated with a professional organization in their field.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
