I recently purchased a home and was not familiar with the boiler system. I had no heat in the house, and Dan was able to quickly identify the problem. He explained how this particular boiler works and also showed me what to do if the same issue came up again. I would definitely call him if I have any other issues in the future and would highly recommend him.

Our heat pump broke down so we called a company out to take a look then they told me they can fix but the cost would be so high that they recommend that I should consider a new heat pump so I told them I will think about it . So I went on Thumbtack for a second opinion I got in contact with Remedy Cooling and Heating Remy came take a look at my heat pump run some diognostic told me that the heat pump need freion and one welding he told me what it would cost, how long the work would take , very upfront and honest very hard to find in these days . Remy did not charge me to come out and check on my heat pump and run diognostic on the unit very honest. All I can say from now and for the foreseeable future he is my go to HVAC contractor . Mark W

A&M Services just finished fixing my steam boiler/furnace & radiator issue at my home in Roxbury. Our heating sysem and furnace is very old and it's a little scary to let just anyone work on it. Thank goodness I can say the service they provided was freaking amazing!!! On the coldest day of the year thus far, the boiler decided to stop working? ...aaargh. Each time I looked at the thermostat, the temperature inside the house dropped another 2 degrees. That was no fun. I honestly don't know how they got here so fast but they did and I'm glad for it. Professional, knowledgable and skilled describes this company best. And the cost did not burn a hole in my pocket either. I have been trying to find a company to replace my other guy and finally my search is over; what a damn relief. When I'm ready to change to a newer boiler I already know who I'm going to call. Thank you A&M for all your help today!

Let me first say that I'm a new home owner of a house with a water heating system I know nothing about and it wasn't working in the morning. I called and he offered to come in a couple hours. Meanwhile, I realized I had shut it off because the red shut off switch was next to the kitchen light switch. I turned it on and all was well. He didn't have to fix my system but he did come and schooled me a bit about my system and answered all my questions I wanted to know. He didn't even charge me for coming out on a weekend morning. I will use him again if and when my system needs real repairs.

I found Mike Drohan on Thumbprint and after explaining our situation (we had another company come out last week and they charged us an astronomical price and after a few days, our AC unit was not working again.), Mike was kind enough to suggest that I call the previous company to see if they would value the warranty. After being stood up by our previous company, and a few phone calls to explain the situation to Mike, he rearranged his schedule to come today. Mike evaluated the situation quickly, fixed the problem, and even saved us money by using Freon from our other unit. He is a stand up guy, who takes pride in his work, and also gave us some pointers on how to maintain the unit throughout the year. I would highly recommend Mike Drohan for your HVAC and heating needs!

We had been having various issues with our heat for a couple of months. Lewis called us back to setup the appointment within half an hour and arrived at the scheduled time. I appreciated that he took the time to review all of the problems and come up with a solution, rather than just trying to get in and out as quickly as possible. Once he found the problem (a previous company had left our heating system at a much too high pressure which had damaged components), he thoroughly explained his solution and then came back the next morning and fixed everything. Our heating system, which hasn't worked correctly in months, is now working perfectly. I only wish we had called NSHVAC/R sooner. We will certainly be continuing to use their services in the future.

Mike and his team are wonderful. He came on time for the quote. I received his proposal on the same day with very competitive price. I immediately hired him to do the work. The work includes removing the oil tank, the old oil furnace and install a new gas furnace. From start to finish only took only one and half days. There were total of 6-7 people came on the first day, and they remove the old furnace, tank and pipe very swiftly. On the second day, they connect the duck and install the new furnace and have it up and running in a few hours. They are as reliable and professional as you can wish for. I highly recommend Mike and his team!k

Though we were dismayed to learn our new home's furnace was NOT 14yrs old but 1972, we were very happy with Jonathan's knowledge of this old system and reassurance we cam keep it going. He explained the pilot system and everything to us and even came right in testing CO levels all around. Will definitely use him in the future.

I met Chris through a mutual friend who highly recommended him. I was hesitant at first because this person is a good friend of mine and these are the types of situations that tarnish friendships. Fortunately, this was not the case. I explained to Chris the issues I was having with the furnace and condenser to the best of my ability. He then proceeded to troubleshoot the system and explained what he was doing step by step. He was able to isolate the problems to a wiring issue. I'll say it again, a wiring issue. No parts to purchase, just simply wiring the system properly. He could've told me anything, he could've sold me anything but instead, just told me the truth. A very rare quality to find in a person nowadays. I would highly recommend Chris to anyone and you can be comfortable knowing that he'll be honest with you and the job will be done to your satisfaction.

They immediately responded and seemed knowledgeable. They told me things my regular oil furnace cleaner company should have told me. Friendly, accommodating with times, follow up. I did not use them for the service, so I can't speak to the actual work quality, but their customer service was fantastic.

Hired Anthony for furnace maintenance. Anthony arrived not only early but did a great job on his work. Did everything he said he’d do. Very honest & professional, willing to answer any question I had. Recommend everyone to give Anthony a call, you won’t be disappointed. Also, he left a pine scented jar in my basement to kill the oil odor 👍

I had been struggling with a terrible HVAC company and called Endless Energy for some professional information. I spoke with Wes and Rob, they both took the time (over a half hour) to discuss the details of purchasing and installing a boiler/heating system knowing I was already buying from another company. They were more than happy to help because they wanted me to have heat ASAP and not get scammed by another company! I think my experience says a lot about the kind of company they are if they are willing to be a resource for a family that is not even their customer. I am still still struggling with the previously referenced company now, but as soon as the job is done I will be calling Endless Energy back and finding out how I can switch my business over to Endless Energy. Great first impression and have already recommended friends give them a call first.

We recently met James who quoted us and had ARS install a new boiler with central air conditioning system add on. We are very happy with the workmanship and professionalism. We had a small problem with the thermostat but one call to the service department and they had a tech out within two hours of our call who replaced the thermostat. All in all I appreciate the hard work of James and Mike and Eric. They all did their part to make this large purchase an easy pleasurable experience. Paul G - Middleborough

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
