Dealing with Marco was a dream. We hired his team to deal with a terrible peeling lead paint problem on the exterior of our 1920s home. Marco was professional and knowledgeable from the moment he arrived to look at the job and was proactive in pointing out things that needed to be done. He gave us a very competitive price and the team worked quickly and efficiently to remove the old paint, fix rotted trim, replace gutters and repaint the whole house. Marco recommended powerwashing the deck and garage while we were at it and I'm so glad we did. The crew was professional and cleaned up after themselves at the end of each day. No qualms about touching up anything that we pointed out. The house looks 50 years younger and after dealing with inside renovations over several years I can say its hard to find a contractor like Marco who shows up when they say they will and does what they promise. I wish I had more things to paint - I would hire this company again in a heartbeat.

I worked with Elizabeth after we purchased an 1835 house in an historic district. Some minor repairs were needed, plus a complete repainting of the interior. Elizabeth has a great color sense and the workmen, no - craftspeople - that she provided were fantastic. They all did an outstanding job and Elizabeth supervised them thoroughly with great attention to the tiniest detail. She also had some creative ideas for dealing with the quirks of an old house. Since our means were limited and we like old things, our plan from the beginning was to furnish with vintage pieces from Craigslist & Ebay and antiques from auctions. This caused us to be rejected by other decorators ("We do a lot of ordering," one told me). Elizabeth was completely comfortable with our approach and had many suggestions for sources we were unaware of. She also passed on to us all of the decorator's discounts that she received, which were a huge help. Her rates were very reasonable and she was very clear about her work plan and billing. Elizabeth was very enjoyable to work with - the perfect person for a project like ours.

I HIGHLY recommend Ralph St. George/KZM Home Improvements for any home project you may be considering. Highering someone site unseen from a web service can be nerve wracking, but Ralph/KZM will not disappoint! I took the chance recently for a TV mounting and shelf building project in my new home. Ralph made a point of meeting me first, assessing my project needs and giving me a fair quote. The quality of Ralph's work, attention to detail, promptness, and courteousness were amazing! Despite the fact that the project had some unforeseen complications, Ralph was persistent in trying to find a resolution to the problem, often taking time beyond his projection to follow up, either personally or with a phone call. I respect this tremendously. I will definitely use Ralph's services for future project needs, as I am more than happy with the end result, and would encourage anyone else contemplating his services site unseen to be rest assured.

We hired Adam to remodel our kitchen and also build a new deck, and his work quality and efficiency far surpassed our expectations. Not only did Adam complete the project on time, he also managed to stay within budget, which was a daunting task considering the extent of our projects and our tight deadline. We are both first time home buyers and have no experience with a fixer upper house, but Adam easily won my trust when he gave me a quote and provided me with his action plan to deliver within my timeline. Adam was the only contractor out of the 6 others I called to give detailed breakdown of the costs. He also listened attentively to what I wanted. He really took the time and effort to understand what we expected from him and went above and beyond to make our visions become realities. I wouldn't have my dream kitchen without Adam's help. What I had was just a picture and a vague vision in my mind, but Adam guided me through the design process and executed with perfection! I had multiple projects going on at the time and he coordinated all of them so seamlessly, I was able to move into our new house and have a functional kitchen, something I didn't even think was possible. Adam and his crew always cleaned really well after their work, even my neighbors were impressed with the kind of care Adam had given to our property and needless to say, I've given my highest recommendation to Adam and pass along his contact to all my neighbors and friends. What I appreciate the most about Adam is his honesty, a rare trait to find in contractors I've dealt with. Adam delivers what he promises and he doesn't cut corners in his work. I just hope all the raving reviews wont get him too booked up for my future projects!

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

It's rare to find someone who takes such pride in their work as Igor does. Great communication, punctuality, and value. Igor did more than expected and the final product is amazing. We had Igor remodel our basement after it was flooded. The work included installing new wood-look tile, drywall, plaster, paint, and new trim. After the work was done, he cleaned and made sure we were happy. He came back when we had a small area that needed some additional plaster. He is incredibly responsive and has a great attitude. We will definitely use Igor again!

We hired Juliana, owner of Creative Interiors, on the recommendation from a person that we worked with. This person contracted with Juliana to redecorate the bedroom and living room in their home. They were thrilled with the results, and commented that Juliana did an exceptionally great job. When we renovated our home, Juliana and I went shopping for fabrics for new drapes for the house; new bed comforters; and fabrics for sofas and chairs that we wanted recovered. She is a wealth of information about decorating, and she brought us to shops that we would not have been familiar with without Juliana's help. We also went to an art gallery with her, and we bought a couple of prints and had them framed. Juliana was amazing with the help she gave us choosing frames that looked the best with the prints we chose. She put 100% into helping us redecorate our house. She came to our house and helped us hang the framed prints , explaining the lighting in the rooms and the pros and cons of putting the prints on certain walls. The results were beautiful because of Juliana. Another thing that we really appreciated about her is that she taught us so much about decorating. She explained everything to us as we shopped. No matter how many questions we had, Juliana always had the answers. Juliana is a kind and caring person. She is very easy to work with. She has unending amounts of patience, and accommodated all of our needs. Juliana never cancelled an appointment with us, she was always on time, and her help was invaluable. The characteristic in Juliana that we appreciate so much is her honesty. She never tried to persuade us to purchase anything we did not like. She insisted that we make the final decisions on all purchases. Juliana's words to us were: "At the end of the day, you live in the house and you have to be happy with it." We were happy when it was completed and we still are grateful that we met and worked with Creative Interiors.

Change is good. However, change is not always easy for some people! Let Linda be the one to make it easy and enjoyable for you! She has helped me transform a family room, a bedroom, a kids office, and she is currently helping me give a facelift to my dining room. When we first met, she took lots of pictures, asked me a ton of questions, and within an hour she had already had a sense for what I liked and didn't like. She is a joy to work with and has made such wonderful changes to our home! If you need a little help with decor or if you're looking for a complete transformation, Linda is the one for you! Since working with Linda, I now look forward to change.

Sarah has an amazing gift. We hired her several months ago, to guide us through a complete overhaul of our entire house, one room at a time. Initially, we had several designers come up with a concept so we could choose the best one, and hands-down, we chose Sarah because had the best design concept. After asking us questions, she was able to clearly articulate what it was that we wanted and the overall look we were going for. Working with her has been extremely easy. She communicates well, is thorough, detailed oriented, and overall has exceeded all of our expectations.

Hannah has helped me redesign almost my entire house. She helped me with a guest room a couple years ago, and has helped me carry that craftsman style throughout the entire home. She’s very good about matching a particular style while still staying in a reasonable budget. She’s also very easy to work with and share ideas with. I’d highly recommend her.

I can't say enough about Maureen and her team! We recently sold our home and MLT Design Group was there for us through the whole process, They made great suggestions about what we needed to do to get our home in the best possible shape to sell it for the best price. They did excellent work and by the time they were finished we didn't want to leave!! They were professional, punctual, and went above and beyond throughout the job. Our 20 year old home looked brand new and when Maureen and her team finished staging it we couldn't believe the transformation. I highly recommend them!

Tess was wonderful to work with on our bathroom renovation. She has a magical ability to draw out your own design style, making the process interesting and engaging. For our bathroom project, Tess developed a design plan that was consistent with our goals for an ocean inspired room that would fit into a very traditional house. Tess helped us select a color scheme, designed tilework and a wainscoting treatment that work to create a lovely cohesive look and integrates beautifully with the rest of our home. Additionally, Tess helped me shop for fixtures and floor tile. It was such a pleasure to have someone with me, to keep me from being overwhelmed by all the choices! I loved working with Tess and recommend her highly!

My experience with Jacqui was unbelievably awesome she was so understanding and patience of my situation. I had to downsize from a 1700 sq. ft. home to an 800 sq. ft. apartment, I was so overwhelmed with so many things that I couldn't stay focused or figure out what could stay, sell, or give away and it was taking weeks for me to try and figure out what could go where and get as organized as possible so I decided I needed help with this mess...Jacqui to my rescue, the first day she came to check out the work I was asking to be done she was so nice and after she looked at what I had brought into such a small space... even that didn't scare her away so after our conversation and Jacqui explaining what could be done to make me love my new home I knew she was just what I needed so I hired her right then and there, we made an appointment for the day and time that worked for both of us and she did leave me with things I needed to do to be ready for her on the day of our appointment. Because of the things I did in advance it was so much easier to figure things out and the very first day we worked so well together and got so much accomplished, Jacqui has a great sense of humor and she knew just when to use it when I really needed it especially when I still thought this job would never end but by the end of the first day I felt happier than I'd been in a very long time and seeing there really was a light to the end of tunnel for me and when she came back to finish up (which took only a couple of hours) and the job was complete we looked around to see if anything needed to be changed around...nothing had to be changed and I couldn't believe how organized everything was, at this point I gave her the biggest hug and told her she had just changed my life to the best it's been in a long time and I ABSOLUTLY LOVED MY NEW HOME!!!! Now I'm looking forward to having her come back and help me do some decorating :-) If you're looking for the "BEST" look for Jacqui, you won't be sorry :-)

I was really in a quandary about getting my house ready to be shown in a little over a week. A good friend mentioned that she had seen Maggie Crowley's work and she highly recommended her. Because I live in Chicopee Ma I was not sure that Maggie would be interested in coming all this way. My home was built with love in 1894 and I have tried to preserve the best of my home. Maggie arrived promptly with 2 assistants and a wondrous journey began. Maggie was very professional but she had a warm smile and put me at ease immediately. As we moved from room to room I was inspired by Maggie's recommendations. We all spent several hours freeing my home of so many things I thought I couldn't live without. My cherished things were packed up for a trip to the attic and more things were donated to Savers. They even packed up 3 cars and brought my donations to Savers! For that, I was very thankful. Maggie's perspective and efficient suggestions turned my home into a very beautiful and somewhat bare home. I was really thrilled with Maggie's work and I would definitely hire her again and recommend her to my friends. She was very interested in showcasing the antiquity of my home in the best possible way. I don't think you will be disappointed if you engage this lovely young woman to revitalize your home. My home is in the MLS listing for 18 Casino Avenue in Chicopee, Ma.01013 Thank you, Maggie!!

Casey exhibits a level of understanding, professionalism and courtesy that is refreshing and comforting. We enlisted Casey to develop plans to remodel our recently purchased home in 2013 and she far surpassed our expectations. She provided several reasonable options within our budget that fit our lifestyle, and generated plans that our town and GC felt were detailed and precise. My husband and I could not be more happy with our home and we are so very lucky to have had the experience we did working with Casey. We highly recommend her for any architectural and design needs you might need.

My husband and I had a great experience working with Hannah. We recently moved into our first home and were unsure of what we wanted to do with the space. As our house is much larger than our previous home (but not a forever home), we struggled with which areas to focus on improving and how to prioritize purchasing furniture. We weren't sure what our "vision" for the space was, and she started by helping us tease through that, offering options without overwhelming us. Hannah was able to help us make selected improvements that had a big impact, focusing on common spaces and "high traffic" areas, recommending decorations and furniture that were both within our budget constraints and timeless enough to stay with us for years to come. I loved her small style suggestions that quickly transformed a room - even just placement of furniture or artwork. Hannah explained what changes would help make our home feel more finished and quickly helped execute, based on our personal style. I would recommend Hannah over and over - if you are looking for a full interior makeover or just a small space, she's able to translate her skills to whatever the task.

Helen is very talented and really understands how your home should reflect your personality. She's enormously versatile and can work to any budget. She's a pleasure to work with and really listens to you. She was a godsend when I moved into my first apartment with literally nothing but a suitcase and a toothbrush. She took my floorpan, measured each space, talked to me about how I would be using each room and pulled everything together. I still get compliments on her style and how each piece is distinct yet it all comes together so perfectly. Not too formal, not too informal, very comfortable daily living yet ideal for entertaining, too. And when I moved she'd selected the pieces so well that even when I shifted them around to different rooms in different space it all still works. You won't find a better resource than Helen!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
