I have a 1y/o yorkshire and maltese mixed dog with serious separation anxiety and some behavior issues. I was going through the dog trainers in my area and Jennifer caught my attention immediately- the review was almost 100% positive, saying how helpful and responsive she is. We scheduled a meeting and I ended up training & boarding my dog with her for about a month. The result was impressive: he's crate trained, he becomes quiet in the car, no more excessive barking... She even found out his favorite raw food and changed his diet...He used to have kibbles and wouldn't eat much every day.. Now he finishes every meal within 2 mins! He looks super healthy now!!! I'm definitely gonna board my dog with her again. Training and boarding are both amazing!!! SHE'S THE BEST!!

Peter has been helping train my very domineering rescue pup. He has been nothing short of amazing!!! He is patient and kind and takes his time with each session. Our dog is stubborn and aggressive towards men, week by week I have been seeing changes in our dogs behavior. I am surprised at how quickly he picks things up all in great part to Peter. I look forward to the changes that we will see in appointments to come. I would 100% recommended Peter if you are in need of a dog trainer.

Theresa is doing great job on training my dog. She really loves dog. I can tell that she is fully engaged in training dogs. She treats dog as her little baby. I am very glad to have Theresa as my dog's trainer. She is patient and responsible. Both of I and my dog have learned a lot from her. Sprite learned to sit, down, and leave things. She becomes a polite puppy and starts to listen to my instruction. Although sometimes she is still a little bit hard to control, she had learned more that I have expected. I would like to keep touch with Theresa and let her teach Sprite more lessons. I am very appreciate for what Theresa have done.

Lisa is a highly gifted trainer! Her innate ability to instill calm behavior is unmatched by any trainer. Furthermore, her experience training horses gives her the ability to work with larger more unruly dogs. Where other trainers wanted to break the dog into submission or spoil them, Lisa walked a line that shows the dogs they are loved but are on the bottom of the totem pole. In addition, I was taught how to work with my dog in order to further his training. Her prices are more than fair and her results are amazing!

Amanda has done wonders for what was already a pretty good dog, but a bit stubborn and way too clever too often. There is still more work to do but I would easily recommend her to anyone looking for a good dog trainer.

Isys is an incredible dog trainer. Our yellow lab has spent two separate weeks in her care (at 7 months and 11 months) and has made incredible strides. The first week he learned basics, sit, stay, go crate, leave it, and drop it, as well as work on recall and healing. He was with us for 4 months in between sessions and then went back for a second session. He has been home for a week since his second session and his recall is now much much improved as is his healing. He really seems to understand these commands which make our life so much easier. He also worked on leaving and dropping items in the yard (which is important for us with a young family and lots of toys outside which are not for him). Isys is a warm and gentle trainer who clearly loves dogs and training them. She is able to achieve great results in a calm and understanding manner. Our dog goes running to her the moment she arrives and is always so happy to see her. She has worked hard with our whole family to help train the puppy. She has helped my husband and me with our command over the dog but she has also taken the time and interest to help our young children learn how to safely and effectively participate in his training. She is truly a gift to our family and I would recommend "She's a Keeper" to anyone looking to train their family dog. She also goes above and beyond the duties of your typical trainer. She offered to pick our puppy up from our house when nobody was home, took him to a puppy play date, introduced him to swimming for the first time, and dropped him off again, just because she thought he would enjoy the experience! You can't ask for more than that! Thank you Isys!

Jacqui is an awesome trainer! Through her training & suggestions, our girl Molly has been more responsive to us. Through Jacqui’s positive re-enforcement we also now know a much better way to communicate with Molly. Her methods are basic & simple to follow so we can follow up with Molly’s “homework”. If you want a great dog trainer, Jacqui is the lady for you. She comes highly recommended by our family.

I adopted my 2 year old dog Kayla only 3 months ago and Mike, along with help from his 2 wonderful dogs, has helped us reach several milestones: teaching her to get in the car, introducing her to the dog park experience, learning to walk on the leash, and most importantly, building up my confidence so I can help Kayla build up hers. I highly recommend his services.

Sue and Catherine have shown dogs for me for about 15 years now. Different breed, different temperaments, and they have ALwAYS been kind to the dogs. I have had other handlers at various times, and Sue is the only one I would EVER leave my dogs WITH!!! You can feel very comfortable about using her---she will care for your dog and train it well. If it can be done, Sue can do it---Catherine too

Jess has done an exceptional job helping us train our dog, Bruin. He is a 2yo German Shepherd that has anxiety and a ton of energy. We just finished our 6 week, private training lessons and are extremely thrilled at all of his progress and could not have done it without all of her help. We plan to sign up for more training with Jess to take it to the next level. I highly recommend Jess if you are looking for a trainer. She is extremely patient and so knowledgeable about dogs and very helpful.

Elaine is a great dog trainer! She really understands dogs' behavior and how to deal with them. She did an excellent job showing us how to deal with him and gave us so much great general info on raising a dog, which we really need as first time dog owners.

My 4 year old American Eskimo mix was having a hard time with other dogs on the street and would get very anxious and bark at new people. After just a few sessions with Susan my dog, Benny, made almost a complete 180. She was so kind and loving with him and so helpful and supportive of me that our time together was incredibly positive. Susan was also willing to work around my very busy schedule. She not only helped Benny but she have me the tools to stay calm and follow through with Benny's training. I would recommend susan to anyone looking for an excellent dog trainer.

Robin Billings is an experienced dog trainer. Robin has the innate ability to "read" your dog, and then she can help you understand how to train your dog. Robin's training methods are positive, not punitive. You and your dog will both enjoy having Robin instruct you - whether it you are training house manners or for the obedience ring.

I have been using Pawsite Dawg for 7 months now and could not be more thankful that I found them for my 2 chihuahuas, Louie and Olive. What I love is that I have one regular dog walker (Tricia) and not a group dog walker model like some other businesses have, where a different person could walk your dog each day. I have one difficult dog, who takes time to get to know new people and he now looks forward to his daily walks. I have also used them for over night stays in my home and everything went really smoothly. Angela is very organized and has been flexible when I needed a last minute night time or weekend walk. And to the prices are very competitive. I seriously cannot recommend them enough!

Janet was great with my dog Gus. He is super stubborn and has some aggressive tendencies, so finding the right trainer was really important. I didn't want to use an e-collar for training which so many trainers like to do. Janet is all about positive reinforcement. She gave me the fundamentals to build upon, and after just 1 session, Gus was already showing signs of improvement. I highly recommend Janet. Her initial consultation is super informative and she was hands on for the whole 2 hours. You can't go wrong with hiring her. And don't let the lack of reviews fool you - I was her first Thumbtack client.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
