I went to Cultura Latina for bellydance class and was invited to stay for salsa dance class. Learned new skills and met new friends. Now, I am going back for Bachatta dance lessons.

For years I’ve taken group dance classes for fun, exercise, and for the sheer joy of dancing. But they’ve always been dance classes where everyone learns the same steps to a piece of music. So it was with a bit of trepidation that I signed up for partner salsa lessons with Steven. What’s it like to follow someone who leads? Would everyone else know what to do, but not me? What if I can’t do it? With the very first class, my fears were allayed. Steven is such an excellent – and fun – instructor. He explains what the movement should feel like, not just what the steps should be. He adjusts and corrects and tweaks without making you feel self-conscious, and his encouragement and praise makes you want to try even harder. Steven’s passion for dance sweeps you up in the moment and the lesson is over before you know it. (Though you find yourself thinking about it during the week and looking forward to the next lesson.) I’ve taken dance classes from so many instructors; Steven has an amazing knowledge of technique, and, what’s more, he imparts that awareness to his students. With his fun and reinforcing approach to teaching, Steven can coax the best out of us. The result: the joy of dancing comes alive in his lessons.

I have been taking the Jehlen Modern dance technique with founder Wendy Jehlen for about a year. Wendy's technique is special. You will feel peaceful, streteched out, centered and physically stronger after just one session. She teaches at a pace that is good for both beginners and seasoned movers. Her music is fantastic! I am happy she is back from her journey to India, her class was missed by me and many of my movement mates. On a scale of 1-5, I give her class a 5+.

I was referred to Steele for West Coast Swing lessons. I was a beginner and new to partner dancing in general. Steele taught me the basics, helped me to understand styling in movement, and kept the styles current with what I would see in dances. He helped me to build confidence and before long I was able to enjoy the WCS dances with much more experienced dancers. Steele was encouraging, fun, and a dynamic teacher. I would highly recommend Steele.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
