It always feels like a gamble when you hire contractors to do work on your home. You're worried that the quality of the work won't be good enough, that the price won't be fair or that the contractor won't be reliable and timely. I am so thankful to have found Russ and Shop at Home Flooring on Thumbtack. We were in the process of purchasing a house and wanted to have the carpet replaced before the movers deliver our furniture. That meant we were in a time crunch to get into the house prior to closing so that Russ could measure and we could pick our carpet, allowing it to be ordered and arrive in time for the small window between closing day and movers day. Those of you who have tried to do this know how difficult it can be to coordinate schedules of the homeowners, realtors and contractors to make things happen. Not only was Russ prompt with his communication on Thumbtack, he was also very prompt to come out on short notice to meet with me and measure the carpeted area. Russ was patient as I perused the samples, being the stereotypical woman that just can't make up her mind! Once a decision had been made and the carpet deposit had cleared the bank, he put a rush order on the carpet to make sure it would arrive in time for installation. Throughout the process, Russ kept me updated on the status of each step so I knew what was going on. I have to say, this put my mind at ease as it can be a little worrisome to hand over thousands of dollars to someone you found online, hoping that he's genuine and not a scam artist. Let me tell you, Russ Kahian is the real deal and a super nice guy. So let's jump ahead to today, the day of installation. The team that installed our carpet (Dave, Paul and Ritchie) arrived early, worked hard, and finished what was scheduled to be a 1 1/2 to 2 day job in just 1 day. The carpet looks great and my daughter loves the way it feels on her bare feet. After the job was completed, she kept running through the house saying how much she loved the new carpet. The team was professional, courteous and left the house even neater than the way they found it this morning. If you're looking for a quality job at a fair price, don't hesitate to contact Shop at Home Flooring. We plan to use them again soon for hardwood flooring in our dining room!

Wilson was great to work with. He installed some laminate in our basement and then had an associate replace the carpet on two sets of stairs in our home. The work quality was excellent. His prices were fair and he was very responsive whenever wee had questions.

Highly recommended! He is very professional and knows and does just about anything. Before selling the house, we hired him to replace many ceiling lights, outdoor lights, kitchen faucets, door casing or trim, bathroom mirrors and lights ... etc.. He does not waste time talking or even take a little break, always going from one project to another. Great workmanship. Price is very reasonable. Money well worth spent! Thanks much, David!

I can’t say enough amazing things about Go-To Carpet Installation! Oliver returned my messages immediately and was able to come this morning with his partner to take a look at my carpet. I had a unique problem that involved a urine soaked carpet and pad from my cat and after many attempts at cleaning the carpet myself, I realized the padding had to go before I can professionally clean it. Any request I made, they accommodated completely and did so in such a short amount of time! They not only helped me replace the padding, but they also helped me clean and scrub the stains that were left over, replaced the tacking, restretched the carpet, and vacuumed afterwards. It’s something I had been very embarrassed about but they never made me feel badly about the situation and were so helpful! They even gave me a quote just in case I eventually decide to replace the carpet. Everything was done within about two hours! I highly recommend this carpet installation company to anyone-you will be so pleased with the professionalism, care, and kindness that they show to their customers! Thank you so much!!!!

We had Edson do repairs on some shoddy work that was done when our house was originally built (reinforcing outside stairs, new deck/stair handrails, facade replacement & repair). His pricing was fair compared to other estimates, and the final cost was the same as estimated- no surprises. Edson is great with communication, keeping in touch and explaining what work needs to be done. And most importantly, he does a great job! He's thorough, pays attention to detail & always cleaned up at the end of the day. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend him to anyone looking for home repairs & remodeling. He did such a fantastic job, we hope to work with him again in the future.

Contacted DJ Tuesday evening, he came to look at the job (just one room) on time the next day. Gave me a price to install my carpet. He installed it Thursday at 8:00 am (on time again). Excellent job, polite professional, in and out. Just the way I like it!

Rogerio and his crew were just outstanding! They came early, as I asked them. They were very accommodating when I had to ask them to come back later [our fault], much later than agreed time. They were professional, fast - removed all carpet and debris from floors and hauled it away to be disposed. I would definitely use Rogerio and his crew again and again. Thank you Rogerio.

I needed a more functional closet space in a bedroom and wanted to replace the carpet with hardwood in 4 bedrooms and a hallway. Paulo was very helpful and patient with me as we determined the size and location of the new walls in the bedroom. He was very careful taking down the existing closet doors and trim for salvage and future use. The crew was efficient and they always cleaned up at the end of each day. They carefully moved the furniture in order to tear out the carpet and install the wood floor. The entire project covered nearly 900 s.f. of flooring and was completed on time within 5 days. Paulo is professional and a gentleman and cares about his craftsmanship. My friends and family were quite impressed with the work and the renovation! I highly recommend Paulo and look forward to having Paulo return to complete more projects for me.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

    • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
    • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
    • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
    • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
    • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How much does it cost to install carpet on stairs?

The number of stairs you want carpeted in your home will directly affect your carpet installation cost. Putting carpet on stairs generally increases the labor time and requires a higher degree of detail than laying carpet flat. Where you live in the country also plays a role in your carpet installation cost. Carpet installation companies in smaller towns with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business (insurance, company vehicles, employee labor, etc.) can usually offer their customers lower rates than companies in large cities where the cost of living and the cost to do business are higher. Carpet pros will often quote you a flat rate per stair once they do a site visit to provide an estimate. They’ll take into account the size of each stair you want carpeted (including both the step and the riser), and what type of stair it is. For example, the cost might range between $3 and $10 per stair for labor only. On the higher end of the spectrum, box stairs or staircase stairs with spindles that must be worked around might cost between $15 and $25 per stair.
