I hired Stephen last summer to install a screen door on the front door of the house. The door was not designed to have a screen door, so he had to design a frame build out to accommodate the screen door and handle the stress of the door opening and closing. He did a great design, made the build out look like part of the original door frame, and installed the door. Terrific job and a great person to work with. I'm already building out my list of other jobs I need done on the house and will definitely be calling Stephen to get them done.

Andrew did several jobs for me, such as repairing my front threshold that had rotted. He did a very nice job and it looks great. He took great pains to do it correctly. He also did several "fix it" repairs, such as wiggly wooden cellar stairs, replaced a bolt lock, adjusted doors that were very hard to close, fixed some broken floor and wall tiles, etc. The major job was painting a good sized bedroom that needed both window and wall repair. He did a very nice job. Andrew worked efficiently and the price was very fair. He is a very nice person to have working in your home. I highly recommend him.

John was professional and affordable. He was accommodating when I needed to change our appointment at the last minute, and he even removed my front door to make junk removal easier. He took extra precautions to remove art work from the wall so it was not damaged during the moving process. I highly recommend John.

The job was working on the exterior of my condominium, adding new board replacement from old rotten ones, priming, and painting all the trimming needed, as well as my garage door, and front door. They did an excellent job for a very reasonable price. I recommend them highly for anyone looking for a good contracting company, there work is very professional, there on time, and they follow up with the customer to make sure everything was taken care of.

99 Handy, returned my call promptly. The gentleman was very polite, understanding on what I needed done, insured and discussed in detail the job(s) I needed help with. When 99 Handy arrived (within a day or so) Paul was very knowledgeable, and got the job done in a timely manner. I hired him to do other jobs I have been putting off, (such as replacing an outdoor shower, a new front door handle, etc. I would highly recommend 99Handy, if you don't want to get ripped off and want the best skilled company out there. Steve helped me get my son moved into off campus housing by assembling our Ikea furniture, (an entertainment center, coffee table, nightstand, and desk). Additionally, he helped us out with a multitude of small repairs that were needed including replacing a toilet seat, changing front door locks, and replacing a light socket. He was punctual, professional and took pride in his work. Everything was completed with care and to perfection! He knows so much about so many things, that we only needed to have the 1 handyman help us with our projects. I highly recommend Steve for your projects. We will definitely be using him again in the future.

I needed someone to remove a bunch of broken items like TV's, a/c's, windows, etc. The quote was good and we agreed on a price. Joe arrived on time ready to go. He was easy to talk to and was gone in a few minutes. He would have been gone sooner, but he helped out my elderly neighbor who came out and asked if he would take her door.

I used Reubert on a client's house and was very impressed with his quality work. He painted, living room, kitchen, hallway, bathroom, deck floor and door and stained the front door to the unit. He shows up on time, early even at times, was very responsive and professional with all of his communications and provided his knowledge and feedback throughout the project. His pricing was very reasonable. I called his references and both had lots of praises of his work. I would use him again in a heart beat.

Just used Brinks for the first time and couldn't be more pleased! Gary was extremely responsive and prompt and was at my house the next day and worked with my schedule. My locks were pretty old but he was able to work with them and had all the "extras" on his truck so he didn't need to come back a second day. I had one door lock that he could not work with and he was able to replace it at a very reasonable price. I was very impressed when one of the old locks fell apart after he had re-keyed it and he was back within 24 hours and replaced the older cylinder free of charge. Highly recomend!!

This is my 1st time having someone on Thumbtack do work for me and I must say that I am thoroughly pleased. So much so, I am writing my first review. PROBLEM: I have a door with an antique lever lock that needed an original bit key (ofter referred to as a skeleton key) made for it. I called multiple locksmiths and many were not equipped to do the job. JOURNEY: Jonathan responded very quickly to my inquiry & offered to address my concerns in person the following evening. The evening time was perfect fit for my work schedule. He was very kind, greeting me & my preschooler at the door & came prepared with a multitude of tools for the job. He thoroughly explained each step of the process so much so that my Preschooler was able to understand. In conclusion, he left me with a bit key for the lock and more educated about the process. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Bolt, Lock & Key (Jonathan Nir) In conclusion, for his warm personality, professionalism, high quality of work, extremely fair pricing, authenticity & ability to educate his clients (& child/ren) I highly recommend Jonathan for any applicable jobs.

He was at the house within 45 minutes and had the window fixed in 10. He was professional in manner, appearance and work - super nice guy. I would hire him again without question!

Tom is awesome guy! He went above and beyond tackling our locks and doors situation. We just bought a house (that needs a lot of work)and the backdoor barely opened and closed and the locks didn't line up correctly. The front door wasn't much better. After a few hours of sweat (it was hot!) and determination he saved us from having to replace the whole door/casing for now. Honest, kind and excellent at his craft. Thank you Tom!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
