Jay was awesome in every possible way! He did a small gutter install for a valley roof issue and matched the gutter color exactly to the house color and even installed aluminum mesh guards free of charge. I plan on hiring him in the spring to replace all the gutters on two homes I own. If you need gutters (repair or install), he is the BEST - so definitely hire him or you may live with regrets...Rob A

I had a great experience with Sean and the team at Stormworks. He wasn’t to sales’y. The team worked hard in 90 degree weather to lay the roof. Roof looks great. Sean checked in to see if I was happy. The clean up was amazing I cannot tell that I had a crew in my yard doing any work. I would highly recommend Stormworks for your roofing needs.

What James and his crew did with the deck in our backyard was nothing short of a total transformation. We now have a beautiful deck that we use on a regular basis and absolutely love! We also had James and his crew knock out a wall to add a set of French doors for easier access to our deck and hot tub— it was a tough job, but they made it look easy. James was great to work with, an excellent communicator, and accommodated us on details and changes as they came up during the construction process. He wanted to make sure the deck was exactly as we envisioned, and consistently checked in throughout the project. The crew was friendly and punctual, even working in winter weather. We look forward to using James and Weathertite Roofing and Remodeling on several other projects that we have in mind for the near future. Thank you!!

Overall, we had a tremendous experience with H&R roofing! Ray and his crew kept us informed of the progress every step of the way. Unfortunately, we were hit with some unexpected challenges during our home renovation, but Ray and his crew provided us with reassurance and sound advice during this time. Their work was clean and well-done. We are impressed by their attention to detail. I would certainly recommend using H&R roofing for any roofing, siding, window projects!

Mario promptly replied to me and set up a time to come out to give an estimate for a roof repair. He arrived on time and was very personable and professional. He said he would have an estimate to me the next day and he did. It was inline with the insurance estimate so we agreed and scheduled the job. Mario confirmed his arrival time and showed up accordingly. Mario and his crew made the repair and it looks like new. Clean up was impeccable with no trace they were ever there. I highly recommend DeCarney Roofing and if I ever need work again will call them.

We worked with Steve and Joe for an asphalt roof, soffit ventilation, and a roof repair on a sun room from a fallen tree. Steve was great to work with and he was the most communicative of the 10 or so roofing estimates we inquired about. I asked many technical questions as I am an engineer and very detail oriented by nature. They did everything they said they would do and did a quality job. Steve stuck out from the beginning as he called our town building department to find our local codes to find out what was legal as other conractrors were saying that you could put a metal roof over 2 layers of asphalt roof. The roof and sunroom repair was done over 2 days and they cleaned up the yard pretty well. Steve was always easy to get a hold of and really had awesome customer service. They are not the cheapest gig in town but you can trust them and they do quality work. I would hire again. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about my experience

The Storm over the weekend blew away part of my roof, this was an horrific emergency which needed to be fixed right away, I make some calls around, and also applied on Thumbtack, got multiple responds, but Raul Castro was the one that could do it the soonest. He came the next day as he promised, was on time, assess the damage, went and got the replacement shingles, went up there and got my damaged roof repaired, leaving it looking as if there was never a damage. Wow! It was a pleasure to have him work on my roof, and I'll recommend him to anyone wanting roofing job done. His professionalism and his superb knowledge of the profession comes through as you interact with him. Very grateful to have this problem taken care of without breaking my bank!!

I hired HD construction to repair my deck and install trim and lattice around the perimeter. Heraldo was extremely responsive and was able to schedule me in shortly after he reviewed and quoted the job. The overall result was great and I was very happy with the work. I would definitely recommend HD construction and would hire again for future projects.

I was impressed with Walter's knowledge about roofing/skylights. He fixed a leaking skylight and also looked at other skylights and roof perforations to see if there may be issues. As of the last 2+ inch rainfall & high wind event the skylight did not leak. Wife and I are happy.

Of the five responses that I received for minor roof repair work, Andres was the only one that provided an actual estimate even though I provided ample photographs and details on Thumbtack. The team showed up on time, well prepared to tackle the assignment. The fixes to broken tiles were done so that you could not tell the difference from the original roofing. He also repaired some flashing and nailed down some tiles that were starting to come up without any extra charges. I thought that the price was very reasonable for the work that was done, requiring two people. Very nice guys also!

I would definitely recommend LC Construction. They were significantly less money than we were quoted for repairing some roof shingles. They were quick in both responding to messages and getting the job done. Thank you!

We've used Budget Exteriors for several exterior projects-clapboard and trim out 5 roof dormers, replace exterior cedar shingles. The house is a very large, tall structure, slate roof with minimal access to upper floors. Very challenging to work on. On every job Lou was easy to work with, professional, and came prepared to show us options for materials as well as design considerations. Most recently we had all the wood porch railings replaced and presumed we'd use pressure treated or composite lumber. Again Lou showed us a PVC line that accents the decks very nicely, is stylish and had a variety of color choices. Once again, he came through with choices that made the job outstanding. Lastly, I want to credit the Budget Exterior work crews. Depending on the job, we've seen a mix of four different crews, each of which have been courteous, professional, diligent and considerate of the property. I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors for any roofing or exterior contract work.

Saw Nelson and his team doing some work on a neighbors house, and asked him provide price for roof replacement. He came by the same week to walk the project and review with me. He made some suggestions on a few little enhancements, provided roof samples, and explained how he would go about executing the replacement. I received his pricing back very quickly, and his price was very reasonable. Dumpster and materials were delivered on time. Work crew arrived timely, and immediately got to work protecting plants, deck, and surroundings with a huge tarp. Old roof was removed, rotted wood areas patched, new roof installed, and entire area cleaned up - all in one day. Nelson oversaw the project from start to finish, made sure everything was cleaned up from the yard, and made sure I was satisfied before final billing. He provided me with proper documentation for my warranty, and followed up a week later to make sure I was happy. Very good experiece - definitely recommend for anyone looking for roof replacement!

Shane and SDC Roofing were fantastic to deal with. His professionalism and attention to detail was second to none and he left my house and yard cleaner than it was when he started. He was in and out in 1 day. Best of all, he beat all other quotes by a significant margin. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
