Sean Green was professional and responsive from proposal to contract and completion. Sean worked with us in a personal and caring manner in assessing, planning, and handling the multi-day complex roofing of our old house in April, which also included replacement of skylight windows. His price was competitively fair for this area. He respected our input and choices, but also gave good professional recommendations for us to consider. He communicated with us each day of the job, and addressed with us needs that arose with satisfactory solution. An onsite foreman supervised the job the entire time. Safety of the crew, as well as protection of our property was very evident. The roofing crew was respectful, efficient, worked well together, and appeared to also care about the job. Sean's crew includes a carpenter and a painter who were able to take care of a few small exterior repairs near the roof line. Clean-up was thorough. We are very pleased with the process and the outcome. We highly recommend Storm Works Roofing, particularly working with Sean Green.

I have given Sam progressively more difficult jobs over the last year and have been happy with the quality of his work, his great attitude, professionalism, artistic sense and fair price. Work he has done for me includes installing new basement windows with cement, installing stucco on my sunporch and garage, and installing a new driveway and patio with red clay brick. Sam often sends texts to me with pictures of his work. He is proud of his work and I am a happy homeowner who is getting compliments from the neighbors. Nathan

Joe and his assistant Frank did a great job on replacing two window casings and sills at my mom's home. They arrived on time as well, which I find isn't always the case with contractors. When it came time to reinstall the storm windows they ran into a technicality but they knew how to troubleshoot the issue in order to make the correction. I think anyone who hires Joe & Frank to do carpentry work will be 100% satisfied!

Hiring Russ was a HUGE WIN! I was in the middle of putting my house on the market and needed someone who could help me with all the little odds and ends to get my house ready to show. Russ was awesome! He helped with everything including building a new stair railing and installing a pocket door in my master bathroom. He always had the right tools and the best attitude no matter what the project. From replacing missing pieces of trim to helping repair walls, he was always helpful, courteous and neat, plus his recommendations about what to do and what not to bother with were a Godsend. I can not recommend Russ enough.

My wife and I hired Heraldo to demolish an old covered back porch and replace it with an open deck, as well as a quick remodel of our existing front porch structure. We agreed on a VERY fair price. Heraldo agreed to start on a Friday morning. He arrived on time each of the 5 days that he worked at my house, was neat and clean in his work, meticulous to the smaller details, and responsive to any questions we had along the way. He is an extremely hard worker, working full days on both Saturday and Sunday, and had the whole project done and cleaned up by Tuesday afternoon. Just 5 days to completely do the whole project. Heraldo's work is top quality, and I would highly recommend him. If you are considering hiring him, he is a great choice.

I first hired Todd a little more than three years ago when I bought my first house. It was a stressful time because I was a new home owner and purchased a very old house. I hired Todd to remove the wallpaper in almost every room in my house, patch 100+ year old horse hair plaster, and prime every wall and paint every ceiling. Todd was on-time, on-budget, and regularly gave me updates. I hired him again to paint our back porch. In that instance, we also needed a good carpenter and Todd was able to recommend an excellent person. Then last year Todd returned to paint the new cabinets in my kitchen. More than a year later and with a lot of wear and tear, those kitchen cabinets look beautiful. Bottom line: I trust Todd. He has excellent judgement, accurate estimates, and I trust him in my house when I am not there.

The whole experience of purchasing a new replacement glass slider went very well. The company's owner, Gary, came to my house, reviewed some possible alternatives at different price points, and gave an excellent overview of what to look for in regard to quality. I chose a door that was made to order, arrived a bit sooner than expected, and was expertly installed. The installer, Artie, found a lot of rot under my existing door, and this necessitated a lot of extra work, which was done with great care and attention to detail. I would definitely recommend this company if you are in the market for replacement windows or doors.

It was a long time since I renewed the look of my house. I decided to start with the doors from the outer part of the house. Went to UBrothers. I really liked the prices and the samples, which were presented by Andrii, that I decided not to stop only on doors. I really liked the options of windows that they manufacture. Later he informed me about the dates when everything will be done and the prices. I was happy when I saw the results. Windows and doors not only look stylish but also safe. Master Andrii knows how to listen and really knows what his job.

I hired JL Masonry to repair the front stairs of my house. Jon was prompt, professional and neat. He replaced one of the limestone treads and the bluestone on the landing. He also repointed some of the brick and repaired the walkway at no extra charge! I would definitely recommend him for your next masonry job.

If I could give bonus stars I would. J was an absolute pleasure to work with and went above and beyond my expectations for my window replacement project. His attention to detail, workmanship, and knowledge is unmatched. Working with J was a pleasant relief after dealing with some of the other contractors around. I would hire J again for any project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
