Was very professional and presented himself well. I had other HVAC companies out and did not take time to give the right options like Dan did. I am now waiting to meet again with Dan and confirm contract

Moldguys is an *awesome* small family company and I couldn't recommend them more wholeheartedly - I wish they worked in general home stuff and not just mold remediation so I could hire them for all work at my home and not deal with any other repair companies. They did a big job in my basement and cleared out a ton of heavy stuff before even being able to deal with the mold issue and their price was really fantastic, certainly the best I came across. Their hard work and great price is in addition to their really kind way with customers - I work off-shifts and they made sure not to bother me during my daytime sleep hours and were so gracious when I had to ask them for help with things and to move their truck for other contractors. They even helped the other contractors with moving some heavy stuff because I wasn't able to. This brings me to my next point - I have been working with many different contractors lately on various concurrent projects and can confidently say Moldguys were the easiest and loveliest to work with as well as the most professional - they have typed up work orders with a clear breakdown of the work and costs along with when payments were expected..just really appreciated everything about the way they do business. They worked at my home for nearly a week and endured very hot as well as cold rainy weather and just did great work. Lastly, they saved me a lot of money when they pointed out reasons I didn't need to hire a company for additional work on something.. Great people, great company, awesome customer skills, just genuinely wonderful people doing hard work and doing it WELL. Hire them if you want uour job done right by really nice people.

Project was done in less than a week from quoting to installation. Very professional and courteous and the pricing can't be beat. If you get a quote from another HVAC company that seems way too high, then it probably is. Call Remedy before you commit to anyone else.

JC did an amazing job installing my new whole house filters and explaining how to change them out. He also repaired the drain for my bathtub that was leaking and installed a new water line to my fridge. I would definetly recommend this company. I will be upgrading my heating system soon and plan on hiring them again.

Henry responded within minutes after I posted my request for help with our radiator leak. He was at our house in less than an hour and he fixed every radiator in our house. I can't say enough about how much we appreciated his help. We have asked Rite Temp Heating Company to do some more plumbing work for us.

I have to share this experience. I am 74 years old living in Concord, MA. with my grandson after his parents and my husband passed. I have relied on the same service companies since my home was purchased 40 years ago. The solar panel company left holes in my home which let cold air in my basement back room (discovered by this companies plumbing foreman responding to my emergency call) which caused my heating pipes to freeze 3 days ago after a week straight of extreme cold. I had to shut the water off to my house not knowing what else to do and tried to clean all the water soaked carpets and ruined possessions in my finished basement. I called my plumbing company of 39 YEARS!!! and was told by the service a man could not be sent for 3-4 weeks. My homes temperature was dropping fast to 54 degrees. I called countless plumbers in a 60 mile radius, either they couldn't come or nobody called me back. Its now day 3 my oven is on high and electric heaters wont bring the temperature above 35 degrees, I was FREEZING and now snowed in. My grandson found thumbtack. Vincent was the only one to respond. Here is why I am posting this story. I was desperate, freezing and scared to death after hearing of the temperature drops expected after the snow storm, minus 5. Vincent sent an offer to assist by email and stated he didn't know when he could get a man to my home but PROMISED he would get here. I sent my number back and he called right away from another job and told me not to worry, someone WILL BE THERE!!! Told me how he was a former Navy Seal and nothing would stop him from keeping his promise to me. I started to cry uncontrollably, Folks, we couldn't even get to our car to sit inside for heat. I waited, and waited. now the heavy snow was falling, Mayor said emergency vehicles only on roads. Vincent called 5 hours later to say he personally was coming through the snow from 81 miles away. Again I cried and thanked him with every ounce of my being. He PROMISED me he would arrive. He called 2 hours later, I expected bad news, he wanted to ease my worries with reassurance of heat and water again. An hour and a half later at 10:30pm he shows up with a search light on his truck so bright like daylight looking for my house number. He came in and gave me a hug told me everything was going to be o.k. I trusted him. He brought in temporary heat for us (a Godsend right there), 1 hour later he had restored my water service, fixed 3 burst piped and flushed the air from my boiler with this big machine and heat was starting to come up. I will admit I cried so hard my insides hurt. This man risked his life and truck, God forbid he got stuck out there in that cold when he could have chosen to go home and stay safe. He risked so much to come to my aid and when I asked why when ALL OTHERS said no he looked at me and simply said, "it's what I do ma'am". I am so thankful for this wonderful man and this company. I truly don't know what could have happen to us if he hadn't picked up that phone and came to our rescue. I am a religious woman that truly believes God was watching over us this night. May God watch over you Vincent. Thank you for your valiant efforts.

Put in a job at 730am on a Sunday. Got a response by 830am. Tech arrived by 1pm. Done by 130pm. We were in a tough spot because our central air went down the day before a 2 day heat wave was on the way in. Tech was really nice and informative and they didn’t use our situation to rip us off. I’ve had a few companies in the past try to take advantage and quote absurd prices. I’ll never call another company for HVAC ever again. Thanks guys.

We woke up to 2 degrees Fahrenheit and NO HEAT! We tried reaching our regular gas furnace maintenance contractor and several other local contractors without any luck. When we found Tim through Thumbtack we were so grateful. He quickly assessed our issue over the phone, purchased the part and got to our house that same day. Thank goodness! Not only is a he a professional but very personable too. We plan to contract Tim again to install a humidifying system. Thanks Tim!

Chris of NuAire came to repair my mini-split Fujitsu AC following another company from Thumbtack having given up. He also "gave up" after an essential piece of equipment failed on him. After that I had two additional companies look at the problem. One failed to return and the other was too expensive. So I called Chris back. He worked on the problem through several visits, consulting with the factory in addition to following his own hunches. Eventually he came up with a working strategy despite the factory techs having failed to nail the problem. He felt that he had to learn on this job in order to complete it and that I shouldn't have to pay for him to learn. So he greatly reduced the bill to reflect that. Chris is hard working, doesn't easily give up and is more than fair. I will hire him again.

I called Larry to come into the North End to look at a problem with our venting issue in our building. He reviewed the project and spent over an hour with the unit owners and gave us a option to move forward. He did not charge to come out and spend time with us, very rare for contractors servicing Boston.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Jake came in and pretty much saved my ac unit after it had been fried by another HVAC technician. He was at my home for hours making sure my unit was up and running and truly went above and beyond. We will definitely use him again, he is extremely knowledgable and had so many of the parts needed on hand already which saved a lot of time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.
