I own two high end consignment shops. Our challenges, as most retail shops, is constantly getting in new merchandise & getting it out while at the same time making it look beautiful and 'Boutique' like. We are also small in square footage - so another challenge - is putting merchandise out again making it work, removing the clutter, turning over product. That's where Cathy walks in and transforms the store. As far as being creative; she amazes me with her ideas/visions & how well she actually brings them to life. As well as, how quickly she can do a 'touch up' and make the store look so new and refreshed! In my shops it is vital to make our merchandise look as beautiful and as high end as it is. & she comes through time and time again. After, a visit to the shop - it looks better 100% but sales both on-line and in-store are increased. Customers love it and look forward to our changes & comment positively each time. She has made an impact on my store both aesthetically pleasing as well as financially (sales). A huge win for us & our customers/consignors. I highly, highly recommend her, but hate to share her! You will be more than happy with the entire experience. ♥️ Pictures don't do her work justice.

Kate is simply, incredible. Her approach, her demeanor, her way of being is all in alignment with her business - simplification. Cleaning up clutter, dealing with denial piles and letting go of all my treasured junk has been terribly difficult for me. I've wanted to have a living space I am proud of and can feel safe in. After a few years of shaming myself and not getting anywhere I found Kate. In 3 sessions Kate helped me tackle a tremendous amount and left me in a place where I could keep the momentum going on my own. In just a few months I have turned my space around and I am excited by this transformation. When I come home now each day I walk in the door and say wow. That feeling of pride and happiness is thanks to Kate who helped me move through the fear and shame around my clutter. if you choose to work with her you will find it to be one of the best, most rewarding experiences. She possesses all the right qualities to be a mindful, non-judgmental, helpful and intuitive support as you clear your way to a nicer home environment.

I worked with Elan Sheek for a consultation, personal styling, wardrobe updating and personal shopping. I appreciated the feedback and suggestions offered in order to improve my professional image. My entire cost came under my budget and I came away with an array of pieces to mix with my current clothes. Elan Sheek was very honest with her analysis and stayed close to my comfort in styles. I was most impressed with her choices for me in our personal shopping experience. The pieces she picked out for me were some that I would not have thought to choose for myself but found them to be a good fit. I would highly recommend Elan Sheek to anybody.

This was my first time using a pro from Thumbtack. Adrienne was awesome! She was professional, relatable, knowledgable and yet knew how to find good deals. She also provided a written chart to take with you on specific fashion advice that you need. I hired Adrienne for my friend's birthday who wanted to look more polished and put together when she dressed casually. My friend is often told she looks like a teen when she's an adult. Adrienne consulted with my friend at the mall and then we all went shopping. It was great! We walked away with two dark denim skinny jeans, a nice top, cute flats, and a rocking beige Ralph Lauren trench coat for $70 from Macy's! Score! I would totally work with her again and highly recommend her.

Sharon did a good job of explaining the origin of color trends and how we can use those colors in the proper tones to create the most flattering wardrobe choices for ourselves individually. Makeup color was also discussed and I look forward to working with Sharon again to provide more programs that show women how to make the most of their body shape in deciding what to wear at any occasion.

Sophie helped me figure out how to use my wardrobe and clothing choices to maximum advantage. I had too much stuff, for a variety of reasons, and felt overwhelmed sorting it through. She assessed my wardrobe, asked me great questions and most of all understood what I want and need to do to make my wardrobe work for me. I never felt negative judged in fact Sophie supported me in making good choices and educated me about my own style. She is very kind and understanding, she did not impose her style on me rather she helped me to look my best and to be able to make clothing decisions. I actually enjoy getting dressed now, for both work and personal time! I've been having fun with dressing up and expressing myself with new confidence. She is fun and upbeat and made the whole experience enjoyable. She was great about helping me prioritize what to do, and the order to do it in. With her help I consigned quite a few pieces and have used that money to invest in new pieces for myself. She kept our appointments on time and we accomplished all my goals and more. Just a great experience all around.

Getting personal stylist was one of the best decisions I made in 2017, and meeting Deborah made it even better! I had been overwhelmed by the amount of clothes I had. She was very professional, listened what style I wanted (very patiently), encouraged me to try different style I always wanted but scared to do. I really appreciated that she suggested some pieces to be tailored. She also checked my closet and showed me how I could mix and match my old and new wardrobes. I cannot wait for the new season to come so that I can work again with her.

I have been searching for a stylist in my area for some time and at an affordable rate. The stylist organized my wardrobe, helped me find new fashion staples, and even shopped for a special holiday outfit for an upcoming birthday party. I was so impressed with her professionalism and experience. I wish I could hire her more often!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

    What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

    What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

    What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.
