I had a WONDERFUL experience working with DJ Mark and Party Makers. I was a real difficult client! I insisted on making the play list and not straying from it. Mark totally listened to me but used his creativity in mixing the tunes. Now that I know him, I'd be a lot more flexible. Mark has great taste in music! I asked him not to speak much, which he followed. But when he spoke, he was funny! His equipment was great, he was extremely professional. Mark arrived on time, set up quickly, broke down quickly. Consummate professional. My husband has another July 4th birthday next year, I'd LOVE to hire DJ Mark again!!! I've received SO MANY compliments on the DJ from my guests. Everyone asked where I found him! Thank you Thumbtack!!!

Loved that Adam is both a musician and a DJ! He was able to play acoustic for our ceremony and then turn our reception into a party as a DJ. Took the decision of band or DJ completely out of the equation because he is truly the best of both worlds. He was easy to work with about song choice and various other customizations. He also MC'ed our reception and kept everything flowing. Would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a musician and/or DJ.

I have played and worked with Jake over the past couple of years, and he's impressed me with his musical skill and his commitment to helping others learn. We worked together over the past year to manage community contra dances and a weekly school to teach tunes to college students and other community members who would form the band for those dances. Jake was a skilled and generous teacher, working with people at various skill levels (and coming from various playing styles) to help them improve their individual playing as well as get stronger at playing with other musicians and for dancers. He is an excellent player in Scottish and Cape Breton styles, a strong leader in group settings, and also just lots of fun to play with!

Tom was absolutely outstanding to work with from beginning to end! We couldn't have selected a better DJ/ musician to work with. From offering suggestions in the beginning on songs to playing live music at the wedding. Our friends and family haven't stopped talking about him! If you want to get everyone out on the dance floor he is your man! He was so great to work with and very responsive! Some people at the wedding couldn't believe it was him singing when they heard him! Definitely book him for your wedding you will not be disappointed! He helped make our day even more perfect!

Brandy did a great job performing at my wedding. I received so many compliments from my guests about them. They heeded all of my requests ranging from song selection to sound volume and vocal style. Perhaps the biggest testament to their performance was the sight of my 4 year old nephew rocking out to the band's music, despite never having expressed any dance inclination previously. It was an astounding revelation, even to his parents.

Radio Honey is a truly professional quality live music act. Mike and his band of musicians know their material quite well. They put on a great live show and have very good stage presentation with tasteful lighting and good crowd interaction. I would hire them for any event looking for quality upbeat music with a festive vibe.

In my role at Berklee College of Music, I see/hear a lot of music. I happened to check out The New Review this week -- this band is the straight-up, no B.S., *real deal,* hands down. Nine-piece mad-tight band. Great musicians and excellent vocalists making a completely fun atmosphere. Nothing at all against DJs, but there's something hella-special about singers and players who love what they're doing to make your body move, and this band does it like few others. They packed the place, and even people with too little room to dance couldn't help bopping their heads. If you're looking for a band that feels the joy of playing and gives it to a whole crowd, The New Review is it. Absolutely "pure funk, uncut funk, the bomb."

I literally have no words on how amazing this band is! It was a lucky last minute hire and we totally slacked on getting our homework to them on time but they pulled it out! So nice and responsive. With our lack of direction on how to have the reception flow Paul guided us through and it was great! My guests commented a week later to say they had finally recovered from all the dancing! From my 'I need to hear one u2 song one Elton john song and one Bryan Adams song' managed to play during their break a playlist with them on it including my favorite U2 song! Seriously hire them. Like amazing. I want to have a party with them at it every year. All we could ask for and more

John, Sharlene and the rest of the Hipshot band were such a pleasure to work with! They catered to our vision and were so professional and prompt. They were one of the best vendors we hired for our wedding, and our guests are still raving about how awesome the band and the music was at our wedding--over six months later! Do yourself a favor and hire the Hipshot band!

So glad we hired Hilary as a solo sax player for our wedding. He played soft jazz music for both our ceremony and cocktail our. Even though we hired him very last minute, he was very responsive to our requests and accommodated them professionally. Highly recommend him!

These guys are awesome. Everyone at our wedding said the band was the best they have ever seen at a wedding. The lead singer Jeff, crushed our first dance song and the entire band got everyone involved throughout the night. I would definitely recommend them for your wedding. You will not be disappointed.

I have had the privilege of knowing Buddy Fanjoy most of my life having grown up in the same neighborhood and graduating from Woburn High School together (Class of ’78). Buddy is the consummate musician, performer and one of the nicest human beings I know. He was part of the band that played in our production of Godspell circa 1978 that was very well received. He still to this day will play gigs with the two other band mates from Godspell, Tim Gilmore, drummer extraordinaire and the coolest bass player, Dennis Wells. Buddy writes a lot of his own music and does a tremendous job as an acoustic guitar player, singer/performer. Whether playing with Tim and Dennis or performing on his own, I would highly recommend Buddy for any function you are looking to elevate to a top notch level. He, Tim and Dennis recently played at my Mother’s 80th Birthday Bash with over 100 invited guests a few weeks back and people are still calling me to tell me how much they enjoyed the music. I promise you will not regret grabbing some of Buddy’s original music or hiring him for an event.

As a composer, collaborating with Dennis Shafer continues to be a great opportunity to work with an incredibly well-rounded, sophisticated, and poetic musician. After soliciting my musical intentions, such an impeccably pictorial and wonderfully sincere performance of my music could only have arisen from someone so wholly invested not only in his craft, but in a greater concept of what music can mean. I am eager to be again composing music for Dennis to perform. In the spirit of his teaching philosophy, he’s opened my eyes to the thrill of collaborative work. Composers can be recluses, and I needed that eye-opener. His availability, willingness, and capacity to clarify the challenges of writing well for the saxophone makes me a better composer. A chance to work or study with Dennis in any capacity should not be passed up. He is a renaissance man and a worldbeater.

He is the consummate professional, an accomplished musician, with an extensive repertoire. Ether as a solo musician or, with a band, Dave Hines will not disappoint!

Dave B & the Hot Shots

Dave B. and the Hot Shots provided the music and entertainment last summer when we (Woodman's of Essex) celebrated our 100th Anniversary of the creation of the fried clam. An important part of the weekend celebration was having great musicians play for the customers who waited in line to get their fried clams and those who were already eating under our tent overlooking the Essex River. Dave works with incredibly talented musicians and everyone loved the music they played. The band played for 4 hours in July with the sun beating down on them and their instruments were not the lightest or easiest to carry around in the hot sun. But they are professionals and understood they were there to entertain and celebrate with us. It goes without saying that Dave and the Hot Shots are incredible musicians, but they are also nice people to work with and we would recommend them to play without hesitation.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
