Alejandro is an amazing Spanish tutor!!! I am a beginner and was always intimidated about taking private Spanish lessons. He is very professional and has a great way of teaching his students. Always prepared and on time. I'm extremely happy with how much I've learned already ( I've had 8 classes so far) and would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking to learn Español. It was really awesome to learn Spanish from Sibyl. I started from the very basic such as "¿Qué tal?"or "Gracias", and now i can build a sentence and briefly describe the situation in Spanish within 3 months. She prepares interesting materials including pamphlet written in Spanish/ family pictures, which was really helpful to make me feel close to Spanish. I highly recommend to people like me who wants to learn basic Spanish.

Before UMB, I have never taken a class on a different language due to the fact that I went to a technical trade high school. As a Transfer Student entering UMASS Boston, it is a requirement that the student must take 2 semesters (101 and 201) of a language. I chose Spanish because I thought it was the second most spoken language next to English. After the first few weeks of trying to learn spanish with the course and a couple iphone apps, my professor recommended that I go to the UMB tutoring center to better understand this Spanish language. It was at this scheduling session where I was matched up with Arlete as my tutor. We would meet once a week to go over the weekly material and she would give me pointers on how to study and clarify the words that I was unfamiliar with along the way. After a few weeks into the semester, I knew that if I had any chance of passing the class that it would be with the tutoring assistance from Arlete that I could achieve my goal. I ended up passing SPAN101 in the Fall Semester. As the Spring Semester rolled around, I was put into the SPAN201 where I knew I was going back to the tutoring center to find further assistance to help me pass this course as well. While the process for establishing a tutor took longer due to the snow days, I had one session with a different tutor until I made it clear with Arlete that I would like her to tutor me for another semester of this Spanish. We went over the coursework as we did in the SPAN101 but this time it was a bit more advanced. After all was said and done, I passed the class and I couldn't have done it without 2 semesters of help from Arlete. She made it clear that we would meet one day a week at a time acceptable for both of us and we would go over my assignments. It wasn't until small talk that I begin to notice that she was taking time out of her own classes that she could've used extra help to help me instead. I was very appreciative and thankful because I don't think I could've passed the class without meeting with her. I believe she would be a great asset to anybody who needs help with Spanish. She has quite the knowledge on the subject and knows how to relay the information.

I have had Tutors for a few different languages (Japanese & Portugues) so I have experience in working with people of all skill levels trying to teach me a foreign language; that said, Candi is BY FAR the best tutor I've had the pleasure of working with. What makes Candi fit with me is her extreme flexibility. My job sends me on the road at a moments notice and each time I've had to change the schedule Candi has been able to happily accommodate me. A big part of Candi's approach is her positivity, which keeps me smiling and always looking forward to my class. When it comes to her approach to teaching as a tutor, Candi is professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. Tutoring an adult comes with specific challenges, dedication being the most destructive, but Candi's style inspires one to keep with the program and her abilities allow you to have successes on a weekly or bi-weekly basis further inspiring you to move forward. As you can probably tell I am very fond of and thankful for Candi, she's an amazing Teacher and the main reason why I'll be touring Spain next year with a great grasp of the local language. Definitely sign up for her program and you'll be speaking Spanish in no time!

We hired Micheline after my daughter took her initial SAT and ACT test as we felt she could do better with the input of an expert. After two months of consistent tutoring, my daughter again took the tests and her scores improved dramatically. She liked Micheline, and we were happy with her professionalism. Micheline is also very patient. When my son needed help with Spanish, we called Micheline. My son enjoyed & looked forward to his lessons, learned to love Spanish, and made a lot of progress. We would highly recommend her!

Juan is a very professional and organized instructor. I took Spanish lessons with him and my level of proficiency increased dramatically since I needed to pass the ACTFL Intermediate High. In addition, he speaks Colombian Spanish which is one of the easiest varieties to understand. I strongly recommend him.

To Whom it may Concern, Anna has a very good experience. She was born in Russia and has a very good backing in the Russian language and the English language. In the 1990's she helped me through the translation of my work in Russian. Along the same lines, she helped translate the Russian documents that I retrieved from the KGB archives. I did all of the leg work of visiting the sites, archives, and locations in Russia (over 22 times) in which I visited locations that my relative was sent to in Russia in the 1920's. I had guides and interpreters in Russia to assist me. I have the desire to learn the language (Russian). It is a hard language. Anna has guided me through many lessons. I can read and translate a lot of the work in the lessons. I reviewed many document from the Archives in America, Russia, Finland. I met with additional people in Russia to uncover the story of my relative. I have met Anna's father and mother several times in Moscow. I met many other Russians and as they became familiar with my effort, they noted that I had been to more places in Russia then most Russians. Interesting, I was honored with a "Honorable Professor" certificate from the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences Section of Military History , culture and law for my work in 1999. they noted that I was the only American to receive the honor and only 47 Russians had received. I enjoyed talking with young children. They want to learn English, and I wanted to learn Russian. In one time, I was asked to talk to a class. Questions where directed to me and from me to the class. I did need an interpreter at the time. I could go on forever about my experiences. But, Anna would have me tell stories at the beginning of every class. I she would help me, correct me, and go on. Every class produced many new words. I had trouble remembering everything. But, little by little, I developed my Russian skills. I am still receiving lessons from Anna. I will admit that this is more about me then Anna. But, Anna is an excellent teacher of the Russian language (and French, Spanish, and Hebrew). She has been there In teaching me the language, the culture, and the many things about Russia. Sincerely, Edward M. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
