King Window & Gutter Cleaning worked as specification . Cleaned leaves of gutter into bag . Discussed future requirements. Was on time . Although they reschedule from the 19th to the 26th( more leaves would have fallen by then .....They performed the job on a better day for me the 25th of Nov, the rains can now clean my gutter further. I will hire them in June 2017 for: 1. Gutter cleaning(winter and spring debri ) 2. Gentle roof brushing ( roof is 22 years old will be 25 in 2020) 3.Window cleaning on the windows at are higher height or too heavy on the mosquito " bug " screens.

Sean Green and his team get straight "A's" for all qualities listed. He was a pleasure to work with; the heavy duty gutters and 50-year-warranteed roof look great; I have already recommended him to a friend in the neighborhood. And we are already planning to ask him for help with additional improvements to our home. Of all the roofers I contacted, Sean was the only one who came right over, climbed up on the roof and took precise measurements before making a detailed proposal. He was extremely patient with all my questions before the work began (I learned a lot!), explained all the options and remained responsive and communicative throughout the process. His crew was professional, friendly and prompt. I appreciated the fact that the supervisor the day the roof went on was willing to inspect and tighten roof vent connections in our attic crawl space, and that he made sure the crew had cleaned up every nail and every scrap of tarpaper on the ground before they left. Sean himself inspected the roof and sent someone over to fix a minor flaw he'd noticed. He pays attention to details and workmanship. And Sean himself put up the gutters, making a couple of alterations to the original installation to make the result more esthetic. They're perfect. One last plus: As the scope of the project evolved, Sean proved much more flexible and open to new ideas than other contractors I've worked with in the past. He's interesting to talk to. I appreciated that too. The bid from Storm Works was not the lowest we received, but I am glad we paid a little more to get a quality job done by a first-rate professional. We'll be requesting bids for other jobs from Sean. I'd be happy to discuss the excellent job he did for us with any Thumbtack subscribers interested in more detail.

We sustained some minor damage to our gutters in addition to the roof. We hired Weathertite for the roof and while they were onsite, they repaired our gutter which had separated. Very accommodating and quality workmanship.

H&R Roofing replaced my next door neighbor's roof. The roofing crew was very impressive and finished the job the very same day.. As a result of that beautiful job I called Ray to get an estimate for my roof. His estimate was fair and informative. The crew arrived promptly at 7:30 am. They replaced my roofing and some siding. They were extremely professional and polite. The final payment was just as estimated even though the crew replaced more wood/siding than originally estimated. I highly recommend H&R Roofing and Siding.

Right from our first contact I could tell Mario was well versed in his craft. Very responsive and not just on thumbtack but in all aspects from the quote to his diagnosis and all through out the project. He completely stripped and replaced all flaws wood and installed brand new roof for a 10x10 section that the previous contractors ignored which resulted in water damage and ants. Mario is a total pro and even his cleanup was flawless. Can't recommend him enough and would never hesitate to give his contact out to a friend.

Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

We worked with Steve and Joe for an asphalt roof, soffit ventilation, and a roof repair on a sun room from a fallen tree. Steve was great to work with and he was the most communicative of the 10 or so roofing estimates we inquired about. I asked many technical questions as I am an engineer and very detail oriented by nature. They did everything they said they would do and did a quality job. Steve stuck out from the beginning as he called our town building department to find our local codes to find out what was legal as other conractrors were saying that you could put a metal roof over 2 layers of asphalt roof. The roof and sunroom repair was done over 2 days and they cleaned up the yard pretty well. Steve was always easy to get a hold of and really had awesome customer service. They are not the cheapest gig in town but you can trust them and they do quality work. I would hire again. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about my experience

Our condo association engaged Lydon Exteriors for the replacement of a rubber roof (approximately 1,050 sq ft.). Their service was reasonably priced and they completed the project in a timely manner. The team is friendly, punctual and hardworking. Patrick and his team demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience relating to home exteriors and roofs. I would re-hire this company in a heartbeat if needed and fully recommend their service for clients looking for great quality in a timely manner.

I highly recommend Stella Construction when it comes to having your roof re-shingled. Steve Balsavich one of the owners was very prompt in responding to my inquiry about re-shingling the roof. When he comes to your home to meet you he's ready to answer questions for you and explain the whole procedure. The crew arrived early and steadily worked throughout the day. Steve was there if any problem arose and took you out to see the problem. He also took plenty of pictures so if you can't be there he can show them to you. One thing that really amazed me was if more supplies were needed, it was Steve who went and got them so the crew could keep working. No fooling around for Steve's crew either, they stuck to the job and never goofed off. The roof was a 2 day job and I was very happy with the results. My roof hadn't been re-shingled in quite some time and had some leaking problems. I haven't seen one drop of water since the roof was re-shingled. I am very happy with the job Steve and his crew did and would definitely hire them again. They did an A+ Job! NTufts

Ken did some tile work in my kitchen recently as well as some repairs to my doors and caulking our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish, Ken did a fantastic job! He communicated with me from the get-go, had a fair price, and was flexible with the times that he could come. He arrived on our agreed-upon time, performed the work as promised, and did a phenomenal job. He was done quickly and my wife and I were thrilled with his work. We will definitely be utilizing his services again in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs any type of handyman work done.

We've used Budget Exteriors for several exterior projects-clapboard and trim out 5 roof dormers, replace exterior cedar shingles. The house is a very large, tall structure, slate roof with minimal access to upper floors. Very challenging to work on. On every job Lou was easy to work with, professional, and came prepared to show us options for materials as well as design considerations. Most recently we had all the wood porch railings replaced and presumed we'd use pressure treated or composite lumber. Again Lou showed us a PVC line that accents the decks very nicely, is stylish and had a variety of color choices. Once again, he came through with choices that made the job outstanding. Lastly, I want to credit the Budget Exterior work crews. Depending on the job, we've seen a mix of four different crews, each of which have been courteous, professional, diligent and considerate of the property. I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors for any roofing or exterior contract work.

I was in need of timely roof and gutter work before upcoming rain storms. LC Construction responded to my work project request and were at my house within a couple hours. They did great work in patching up a vent pipe on our roof and adding a gutter to our house. We are happy with the work and would reach out to LC Construction in the future for other work.

I had such a great experience with Eric and David - very quick at getting back to me about some ice dam damage. When they got up to my roof, they invited me up to check out other problematic areas that I wasn't aware of. They were very accommodating with the additional repairs, and were timely, clean, and prompt. At the very end, I received a receipt with itemized billing, and photos attached to demonstrate the work that they did. So thrilled with the result!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

What chemicals are used to clean roofs?

Roof cleaning is done to remove moss, lichen, algae, and buildup of other grime and dirt. There are several methods for roof cleaning, which can include a chemical soft wash, pressure washing, low-pressure washing and hand washing. When a chemical soft wash is used, a bleach mixture is sprayed onto the roof. The bleach-based solution is absorbed by the algae or moss, which dies from exposure to the chemical. The roof is then sprayed with a low-pressure rinse of water, which loosens the now-dead material, allowing it to slide off the roof.

For homeowners, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends a mixture of 50 percent laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and 50 percent water. Professional roof cleaning companies will use an industrial mixture that is still safe but may be more effective in eliminating algae and moss growths. Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roof, but each roofing material will have its own cleaning needs, so it’s best to consult with your roofing pro before diving in. Don’t do it yourself unless you can safely navigate your roof, the chemicals and a sprayer system. When in doubt, leave it to the pros.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
