I've been with Joe Merchant for nearly 2.5 years (from before he started Next Level) - which in itself is probably a testament to Joe's ability.
Over this period, I've lost more than 60lbs and have become the strongest I've been in my life.
I am writing this with the intention of leaving a comprehensive review. After all, I found Joe through Thumbtack and I wouldn't want anyone else to miss out on him.
NLPT's training system is not just about weight loss and good physique. That's just the side effect. It's about functional training, where you also exercise and strengthen those typically hard to exercise muscles in creative, different ways. It prepares your body to be most effective in day to day activities, all while helping you chisel your body.
His training regimes are in accordance with goals that you have in mind. Start of 2018, I changed mine from simply getting stronger to getting my body fat % down, and I've lost more than 30lbs since Feb 2018 (with 3 sessions a week).
Once he gets to understand your body, he begins to know what is excessive for you, what your body is capable of, and when it's a mental block that's preventing you from doing one more rep or adding 5lbs. I've experienced this repeatedly.
Joe's knowledge of the muscular system continues to astound me. Couple of instances:
- On more than one occasion, I've complained about tightness in certain muscles to which he will tell me to roll/stretch out an unheard of muscle in a certain manner that he will demonstrate. A few painful moments later, the tightness goes away.
- He observed that I wasn't able to engage certain muscles in an exercise. He then proceeded to sit down in a certain way and asked me if I sat in that posture at work, because that could mess me up. And indeed that's what I was doing.
He also constantly updated himself with latest studies, and is more than willing to have sensible debates with you, should you have contradictory information.
Having had an immensely positive experience with him, I find it tough to say something "negative" - so you'll have to forgive me for that.
I will say this: you may not see "results" within a week or even a few of training with him. Although I'm inclined to look at your own dietary habits and lifestyle (as it was with me), be open with him about it, and stick with NLPT for a few months more. Everyone's body is different, and no one has the magic formula.
Joe loves what he's doing, and it's infectious. You do your bit, and he'll make you the best version of you yet.
