It was the hottest time of the year, and my apartment did not have a A/C unit installed. Alejandro gave me a quote quickly, and even came out at 9PM because I asked him to come out that day. His service, was efficient, professional, and thorough. I would absolutely recommended him!

Dan came out and fixed the AC unit within 10 mins. He didn’t try and upsell me or overstate the issue. Great job and would highly recommend. I plan on using Dan when I need to replace the AC units.

We have a central air/heat system on our second floor and baseboard heating only on our first floor. Remy and his crew are very professional. They truly want to solve your problem without making recommendations for work that isn't needed. Work done: Maintenance on central air conditioning +Installation of ductless system (first floor and basement). I would recommend to anyone looking for help with their HVAC system(s).

I found Joel and Clear Water to be very easy to work with. From the communication that we had to set up the install, up to and including the installation process. Our water had pretty high levels of iron and manganese. I feel as though Joel designed the right filtration system for our needs. Our water is now running clear, not light orange. The taste is great too. No annoying iron aftertaste!

Jose is personable, professional, hard working and does great work. He's also very competitive on pricing. I highly recommend him for any HVAC work. I know we will be working with him again in the future. We hired Jose for our new furnace/AC replacement. Jose worked overtime so that my wife/baby and I could have heat back in the same day. They left everything spotless and went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied with their work.

I did a ton of research on central AC installation for my home. Mark did have the best quote, but ultimately went with him due to his straight forward approach. His technician was excellent and very respectful of my time.

We had Eric come out to fix our AC unit. He found the issue in about 5 Seconds. He was very informative and very well priced the only downfall was the initial $89 fee just to come out here. They charge the fee on top of whatever the cost of the service. So our job was $200 with the $89 fee and ended up being 289 job rather than just 200. Overall I was very satisfied with the knowledge and professionalism I would highly recommend these guys.

We just completed AC installation with Soumadel Services. Mahdi and his team were excellent. Having the owner as one of the operators is key! We put Central A/C in the 2nd floor and ductless on the 1st floor. Everything went smoothly, we trusted them in our house when we weren't home. From the first consultation meeting with Mahdi we felt complete trust in his knowledge as he explained in detail exactly why he made certain suggestions. They use only the best equipment (Carier). They were always on time and were neat and clean, carried out all debris. The best part of the project was the communication. We got a call every night with a progress report! We are now cool and happy. We also will get a free tune up of the system in the spring.

The tech arrived on time and was very professional and helpful. Performed a maintenance on our heating/ac unit and explained all the steps he took and what the results meant. It was so nice to have such a pleasant service tech come to my house and be so informative. He even gave us tips on a few things we can do to maintain the systems. I would highly recommend Ideal air to my friends and family.

Chris installed a new ac condenser (Bryant) and air handler (First Co). He was great! He delivered everything he contracted to do. He was efficient, clean, thorough, professional, and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend including him among the hvac contractors you consider for your work. He’s “into” what he does, and cares about the product of his work. We were very happy with Chris as our choice.

Tim was absolutely incredible when my central AC went down on one of the hottest days of the summer. He came over same day and analyzed the situation and came back the very next day with the parts to fix the unit. It's an old unit and not typically easy to get parts anymore. Within 15 minutes of his arrival the central AC unit was humming along and the house was cooling off! Psyched!! He even carried a floor AC up three flights of stairs for me so that the wife would be cool that night and we all know that keeping the wife happy is job 1! His pricing was amazing and the service was even more amazing. I have a friend for life now. Great guy, professional, and cares about his customers. All providers should conduct themselves like Tim. Thank you for great service!!

I can't recommend Mike highly enough. Mike Kikpatrick is old school. He is courteous, fair, thorough and very down to earth. His bid was the second lowest of the six I received, but close enough to the lowest that I hired him because I trusted and liked him as a person. I had two complete AC systems installed (both the outside compressor and the inside air handler). He always showed up within 5 minutes of when he said he would. If he was any later than that (once a supplier was out of what he needed so he had to go to a second supplier), he called or emailed to update me on his ETA. He did not take any shortcuts. When there were a couple parts that needed replacing, he didn't charge extra for them. When he ran into a couple surprises and things took longer than he expected, he kept at it and didn't charge extra. He charges for the job. He was flexible when I wanted him to do additional work. He personally supervises or does all the work himself. He has decades of experience and knows what he's doing. He gives good advice, but is open to your suggestions. He doesn't try to talk you into things you don't need. He's very responsible, trustworthy and respectful of your property. I plan to use him for service and any future HVAC needs. I can't think of a single thing he could have done any better.

I had a new central AC unit installed. Mike was frank and sure about the details for the job from my first interaction until the job was finished. He was quick to respond to my questions. I was impressed with his interest in and enthusiasm for his work. There were no surprises and Mike came back the day after installation to make a few adjustments after the unit had a chance to run.

Ron is OUTSTANDING. Not only is he a prompt communicator, he is friendly, kind and efficient. We called Ron for a second opinion when We were told our AC unit would have to be replaced. The first person said the device was from the 1980s and wasn't worth replacing the capacitor. Thank God we called Ron. He promptly identified the issue as a broken capacitor, and was able to get us the replacement part the same day. Furthermore, Ron explained the parts failure and told us there was no way our AC unit was from the 1980s. We were so relieved because the house we bought was built in 2002. If you want great service from an honest and hardworking guy, Ron is who you call. You won't regret it!

Great customer service and even better technical work. Trouble shot my central AC outdoor unit for me. Explained everything that he was doing and made it perfectly clear to me what it would take to correct the short cycling issue. even took the time to run me through the indoor portion of my system. I am a first time home buyer and to have a trusted tech is huge. I'll never call anyone else to work on my home heating/ac. Would recommend Northeast to anyone that needs this type of service.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Jake came in and pretty much saved my ac unit after it had been fried by another HVAC technician. He was at my home for hours making sure my unit was up and running and truly went above and beyond. We will definitely use him again, he is extremely knowledgable and had so many of the parts needed on hand already which saved a lot of time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
