I had to cancel the job due to a family friend willing to take care of the replacement of our water heater due to us being on vacation and it being an emergency, but Mark was very professional and willing to work around our time schedule upon our return.

Working with Joel and his team was an absolute pleasure! We had an unexpected water heater death in the morning and Joel was able to fit us into his schedule that very afternoon. He replaced our water heater and also provided some much needed updates to a few other things in our basement. Would definitely recommend!

I had Marvis replace my water heater in my rental property. He was able to pick up the water heater from Home Depot that was pre-bought and bring it to the property and install it. He had great response time. I would use his services again.

I replaced my original furnace, AC and water heater at my condo with Edward at A&M Services. From start to finish, it went exactly as you would want any transaction to go. Edward was responsive, prompt, and friendly. He kept me in the loop of the status of everything going on. He handled the job with great care and made sure I was pleased with everything. Overall, it was a job well done all around. I highly recommend A&M Services!

We had a new heating system put in as well as a tankless hot water heater. They also upgraded our electrical panel and put in an electric baseboard in our foyer. The guys were punctual, extremely professional and knowledgeable. I recently had an extremely experienced contactor come through for an unrelated project and he said the work that Three Brothers did was some of the best that he had seen in years. I am more than pleased with the outcome! Highly recommend!

Vincent was great. He came in, took time to explain everything on how the water heater works, maintenance procedures and he also knew what he was doing. Very nice guy, very pleasant and personable and was able to service the heater quickly. Vincent even offered to come back at not charge extra if the issue that I had contacted him for happens again. In the end it appeared to have been a simple filter cleaning procedure. Now we have to wait and see if the issue we had happens again, but I am confident that Vincent addressed the root of the problem.

We hired Chris to complete a washer/gas dryer install in our basement. A lot of plumbers gave us the run around on the install and advised of solutions that would not meet our needs for our old house. Chris suggested an install that was in line with what we had wanted. He was able to complete the job at a lower cost than all other estimates. Chris showed up on a time and communicated any other issues along the way. We purchased our washer and dryer after the initial install and Chris was able to come back and complete the hook up for us. No more laundromat trips for us!

Quite honestly, Doug White has been the only reliable, fair & trustworthy electrician I have encountered (and I've met several) since I moved into the Metrowest area two month ago. He also does something critically important to me, which is that he communicates when I need him to, not just when he chooses to. I have rented a small house in Shrewsbury, MA & discovered a couple of unsafe electrical issues shortly after I moved in. Doug helped me see many others, and he referred me to a great plumber who fixed the two big plumbing issues within a couple of days. I also have the nuttiest landlady on the planet, because she is angry that I am paying my own money to fix up this "Shanty Paradise" (the view of Lake Quinsigamond is breathtaking). My belief is you can fix a house but you can't dig a lake, and I was determined to live on water. Doug has helped me scope out what needs to be done, and he's only getting a part of the work because my landlady is a builder & has her own people. Nevertheless, even knowing that he wouldn't be getting all the work, Doug has continued to help; so much so that I am insisting that Doug will do the work I will be paying for. Meanwhile, he has been doing things like bringing electricity to the kitchen sink for the disposal and other under-the-radar tasks. He's also fun, funny, and I like him personally.

Mr. Rooter has done several jobs for us including replacing our hot water heater. They came quickly, worked efficiently and cleaned up any debris that resulted from the job they had completed. I'd definitely recommend them to others and they'll be my first and only call whenever I have another plumbing need!

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

Lee was responsive, knowledgeable, and kind. He did the routine maintenance on our five year old boiler, that we did not realize we should have been doing annually! We will definitely call him again next year---or sooner if other plumbing needs arise. He also replaced a corroded pipe on our water heater. The timing and price were great! Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
