Jen catered our daughters wedding reception on 10/10/15, which was at a home in a large commercial tent. She was fantastic from beginning to end! She kept me calm (mother-of-the-bride crazies) and was personable and professional. The food was fantastic and plenty of it! Everything was cleaned up and spotless after the reception. If there were 10 stars, I would have given her a 10.

Sara and her staff were amazing to work with. Sara stayed on the ball and took care of everything we needed for our wedding. She is super sweet, organized, and she showed that she really cared about how our wedding went. She was great at contacting me for information and she made sure that all the details were clear in advance. Sara's cooking was also great at accommodating dietary restrictions. I am a vegetarian, and she had some amazing options for an almost entirely vegetarian wedding. She was also happy to provide additional foods for young children and our wedding guests with food allergies. I really loved working with her and all her staff!

Cristos kitchen was so great at my wedding reception of 275 guests. Chef Chris worked with me throughout my entire process of planning and budgeting. He and his team provided me with lots of delicious food and friendly, genuine service. There was a very big menu with lots of choices for dinner and hordourvs. Everything tasted the same and just as yummy as it did at the tasting. I was so happy with cristos kitchen I would most definitely recommend it, and hire them again.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!! Daniel and his fabulous staff catered my daughters wedding with 130+ guests to rave reviews! Not only was the food OUTSTANDING (cold station appetizers, amazing hot passed appetizers, dinner( tenderloin you could cut with a fork) and Pasta Daniel (that still makes my mouth water!) and a great selection of desserts) but the service, professionalism, and genuine kindness of Daniel and his staff was exemplary! He took care of every detail from preparing signature cocktails, timing the service of courses perfectly, food presentation and clean up. My husband and I were able to enjoy the entire reception worry-free. Daniel is a Master Caterer! Can't wait to have another event so we can hire Daniel again!

Jennifer Josserand is the absolute best! She did an incredible job with taking the information we shared with her about our hopes for what the wedding reception space would look like, and she took it from there...making our vision a reality and then some! The arrangements she made were absolutely gorgeous and all the guests complimented them, then asked if any could come home with them :) When we first met, I came in with some ideas and a price point in mind, and Jen was able to come up with the perfect combination of flowers and accents to really bring everything together in the most beautiful way imaginable! I can't speak highly enough of her work and would recommend her to anyone seeking a florist for their wedding.

Hands down, one of the most positive experiences of hiring a caterer in my life. Visnja and Donna are two of most charming, friendly people I have had the pleasure of meeting. They were always very prompt in returning communication. They have a real eye for how things should be set up as well. We thought we had set up everything for our wedding reception dinner before Visnja and Donna arrived. When we returned they had transformed the space into something truly magical. To top it all off, the food was outstanding, especially considering how much we paid. They were very reasonable with their pricing, and in fact were the most affordable thumbtack offer we received for the job. All in all, I find comfort in the fact that I no longer have to search for a caterer again. I just have to give Visnja and Donna a call, and I think you should too.

William catered our family style wedding reception for 170 people at a private venue and we could not be happier. Not only is the food he cooks amazing, the service he provides is second to none. Prior to reaching out to William, we had been working with another larger, better known, and well-reviewed catering company. They turned out to be entirely unhelpful, unwilling to offer alternatives to help keep our budget manageable and did not take kindly to any requests outside their standard menu and offerings. After eating the deposit on our first caterer, we gave William a call and he provided the exact opposite experience. From our first phone call until after the event was over, he was wonderful to work with. He helped us with crafting a menu, determining alcohol volume (we had a backyard wedding), cocktail and reception layout, and even timeline. He was always very quick to respond, made extremely helpful suggestions, worked around our schedules (and held the tasting in our apartment), accommodated changes to dishes to make sure we got exactly what we wanted, provided more food (and rentals!) for far less money than other caterers we assessed, and had an extremely professional service staff. After it was all over, he put some leftover food in our fridge and my wife and I were able to enjoy it again for dinner the following night with a bottle of champagne. If you're looking for a caterer that really cares not only about the food that he cooks but also about you and making your event amazing, you've already found him.

I found Malone Catering on Thumbtack while assisting my son to find a caterer for his wedding. When I first saw the menus and prices I really thought I had to be misunderstanding, His prices are so reasonable that I could not believe he was in any way related to other wedding caterers. It seems that all wedding services have a 4X markup and we really needed to stay within a very frugal budget. I called Chef Marty and found him to be very easy to work with and very accommodating and I sent his info to my son immediately. The wedding last Sunday at Camp Kiwanee was beautiful and the guests raved about the delicious food. We had requested a buffet style and Marty and his staff did the serving. Absolutely wonderful. And I cannot say enough about his staff. They were so unobtrusive I never noticed them clearing after dinner but they did an incredible job. And every one of them was friendly and helpful and seemed happy to be there. I know my son and is new wife were extremely pleased with Malone Catering. We will not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality caterer at a reasonable price.

If I could give Ken 10 stars I would. After getting my quote, I assumed the quality of the food would not be good because of the low price. Most caterers overcharge for weddings, but his quote was very affordable. All of the references I got were positive, the taste test exceeded expectations, then the actual food that we got the wedding day was just fantastic. We had about 100 people in Newport from a variety of backgrounds and the overwhelming consensus was that this was the best meal they've had at a wedding and it was healthy. He made us kale salad, quinoa salad, roast chicken, veggie lasagna, roast beef, and mixed veggies. The bar tending staff he brought was great and affordable too. And he brought plates and silverware which saved us a ton. I have no complaints and would enthusiastically recommend Ken for you wedding or other event.

Let me start by saying, "Thank you to Chef Coe a me his team for going above and beyond to make sure my parents wedding anniversary was a fun fantastic success!" If your here, you've at least begun to feel the stress and pressure that planning a party can present. From the first conversation with Steve, my mind was put at ease. He and his team were prompt to reply to any questions and communicated with us thoroughly throughout the entire process. I had done some research on him and it seemed he had quite an extensive knowledge of an array of cuisines. Which was apparent as soon as we tasted the food he prepared. Amazing doesn't even begin to describe his food and all my guests agreed! When we asked how, his reply, " always fresh ingredients prepared with love and respect for the food." (A cute genuine response I thought) To top it all off they left my kitchen cleaner then when they arrived! Which was appreciated! We just had a few close friends and family for appetizers and an intimate meal to celebrate an important milestone for my parents, 50 yrs of marriage but Steve and his team we're so good attentive and respectful who would have thought they were cooking for royalty. My family and I cannot thank you enough and will be happy to refer you to anyone looking for services of that nature in the future. Sincerely, The Corelli Family

Shamia provided a delicious buffet for my son's wedding brunch for 15 people. She even took the time to transfer additional food onto her serving platters to make everything look just right. People loved the food, which included beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, an arugula, goat cheese and pear salad, a roasted sweet potato and mango salad, two kinds of delicious frittatas (which the bride said were the best she had ever tasted), and potatoes au gratin. She also prepared a two-layer green-tea cake with buttercream and coconut frosting that was perfection. She brought a lovely server, Paula, with her to handle all the details of prepping, keeping things fresh, and cleaning up. We had mountains of leftovers, and everyone was delighted.

We had an Indian fusion wedding last weekend at an off-site venue, and Simply Elegant Catering did a fantastic job. We originally contacted SEC to provide full service catering and American style food, with the intent of having another restaurant provide Indian food. However, SEC’s chef offered to make the Indian food for our tasting, and it was delicious. As a result, SEC caterered both style menus. They also worked with us to develop a mostly vegetarian menu to meet the needs of the groom and many of our guests. A few of our guests actually commented that it was the best wedding food they’ve ever had. Sam of SEC was very helpful and responsive, and his entire staff seemed eager to work with us to help make our event run smoothly and meet our wishes. And SEC’s services were very reasonably priced. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about SEC, and would recommend them to anyone looking for delicious food with friendly service.

From the moment we had contact with one another until the day of my wedding reception, Seas the Moment went above and beyond. The decor was beautiful. Her responses to my emails were immediate and her attention to detail was flawless. I feel like I have gained a friend. She listened to all of my requests and she also accommodated any last minute changes I made. I would give her a 10 out of 10 all day, everyday. I am very critical of events or parties I throw and I am pleased to say that I would work with her again in a heart beat!!

Robert and the crew at Organic Garden did a great job of catering my wedding in August 2012. My husband wanted a strictly vegetarian wedding, but we wanted the food to appeal to everybody who may not be used to a vegetarian diet. The food was festive, beautiful, and tasty. The service was great. Everyone remarked that they felt like they were somewhere in Europe, enjoying each course very slowly and we lots of mingling and dancing in between each dish. Thank you so much.

I hired Sarah for my wedding weekend. She and her crew were absolutely phenomenal! They came and stayed with us the whole weekend. They served our rehearsal dinner, breakfast, and the wedding dinner. We spoke months before the wedding and she really took the time to understand the types of food we wanted, our concerns, and what we wanted the experience to be like for ourselves and our guests. We gave her a budget that she was able to keep well under, but still give us everything we wanted! Every step of the process couldn't have gone any better. Sarah was a great listener, very calm, kind, and knowledgeable. Her food was top notch as well as her servers! I can't think of how it could have been any better. I was really lucky to have had her. All of my guests raved about the food. I would recommend her to anyone who wants a calm, kind, and stressfree process with amazing food. I have recommended her to all of my friends and wouldn't hesitate to use her in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
