Shujaur Rehman arrived exactly on time and he was supremely efficient and affable. I hired him to do some furniture assembly and to move some things that were too heavy for me. In the future, I will absolutely hire him to do other jobs around my apartment -- various repairs, painting of some walls, and hanging of artwork. I recommend him highly and enthusiastically. I am so glad to know that I can call on him in the future!

If you are looking for a professional, punctual, knowledgeable and expert electrician, hire C. Camargo Electric. I could not be happier with my lantern installation, outlet repair and outside light repair. It's such a pleasure to work with someone I can trust to get the job done!

Matt and his guys could not have been better. They got here when committed, were exceptionally polite and very skilled at all they did. They finished ahead of schedule and the work area was cleaner than when they started the siding repair. D.E. Carroll is my new go to place for construction and repair needs.

ER construction is the best contractor that I have ever dealt w. We own a home in CT that we rent out - had some rain damage. I reached out to over 8 contractors and nobody would return my call. Those who did gave me outrages quotes. We live in TX and ER construction was reasonable and worked with me! He worked through all the issues we had and he was able to handle them all! He repaired the roof, he replaced and repaired walls! He did an amazing job. I have some upgrades that we are planning on doing to the home and ER construction will be the only contractor I will work with! I highly recommend him and will share photos

I originally connected with Eduardo Muniz in order to build a yoga studio. I found him an extremely congenial, responsive and knowledgeable person who had all the right resources and skills to do an excellent job. Meeting and planning with him was a pleasure, and he had a lot to offer in the form of ideas and suggestions. I did not, in the end, build the studio, primarily because of reconsideration of my family’s financial outlook and our best way forward. However, I was sufficiently impressed by Eduardo that I am planning to use his services for some home repairs and renovations I’ll be doing. Once those are done I’ll be able to leave a review regarding how the work turned out.

Thu 8:49 AM Jeff was the first to respond to my request on Thumbtack for a carpenter in the Rockport MA area. He was easy to communicate with and was prompt in any meeting time or email communications we needed. The estimate was clear and we felt reasonable. The work, wood rot replacement, & patio paver repair looks great. I will hire him again to work at my house.

Although it was a small tile repair job, Daniel treated it as if it was a large job. He was courteous and quick to respond to the request for an estimate. He gave a written estimate and include the timeline. Daniel kept in communication and his brother, Jaime, who did the tile repair was on time and left the job site as clean as it was when he began. Jaime and his assistant were pleasant and as noted neat and efficient. It was a pleasure to do business with the Ortega Brothers. I would recommend them, based on the work done here. It is often hard to find someone to do small jobs but, as Daniel said, small jobs need to be done too.

I had a pleasure of hiring Russell for home floor repairing job (engineered hard wood). I would highly recommend Russell for such carpentry work. Based on this fantastic experience, I would consider him for other home repair/installation jobs (gutters, storm door, etc). I had a buckled (peaked) floor due to the seller/installer not leaving enough gaps at the edges to account for expansion of hard wood during summer. I had about 6 estimates, and by far, his pricing was the most reasonable. While most people charged per job, Russell quoted me an hourly rate. Some more reasonable than others. A few were flat out reluctant to do the job, due to its small size (maybe thought it was less profitable) despite the full day needed for its completion. By giving me a ridiculous quote (similar pricing to a new floor installation), they implied they didn't want to work. The job required removing the moldings from the impacted walls, removing all of tiles, then laying them again from the problematic area. He sticks to the quote and to his estimated time. He has a good pace and doesn't linger to buy time. Also, I found him to be very personable. The job was done to the utmost satisfaction. If you want an honest, hard working man to look after your home repair jobs, this would be the guy.

Kyle was great! He was the first to respond to my request, gave a reasonable quote, schedule time for the repair on the same day (day after Christmas), and finished the job in 20 minutes. I highly recommend Kyle as he is skilled in many different areas.

Overall was very satisfied. The price was good value for a large replacement patio and fence. Bruno and his crew were all very friendly and responsive to trying to address my concerns. My yard presented challenges due to pitch of yard and some stump removal. They worked hard to make it work. Took longer then I expected but some delays were unavoidable due to weather and paving company not providing the right color mixture of pavers. And I was not in a hurry anyway. Bruno always got back to me on my questions and issues. Felt they were hard working and very honest.

XCC did a perfect job installing my hardwood floors in two large rooms. There were lots of complications with rooms being out of square, un-level surface around the fireplace due to mortar, and border patterns with different wood, and insets. All of it came out perfectly and with very little wood waste (way less than other contractors would have done). Xavier and his crew also did a great job replacing my damaged sub-floors throughout the entire house - a task that no other contractors were willing to take on. Xavier and his crew always worked hard and are very pleasant to be around. They have wide knowledge and skill sets and are willing and able to do anything you might need. No lazy-bones or burn-outs in this crew!

This father-son time, Byron and his son Eric, helped me out in a time-crunch jam. They responded to my Thumbtack RFP within an hour of my posting it. They met with me at my home the very next day to go over the job in detail. They emailed me a bid promptly and stayed in communication with me about the job as it progressed. They did BEAUTIFUL work, both on detailed repair carpentry in several places on my home's exterior and completed the exterior paint job.

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
