Deborah has been wonderful to work with! My 7-yr-old daughter loves taking violin lessons from her. She is professional and organized. She sets high and well-defined expectations, but is kind and friendly and always encouraging. My daughter comes out of each lesson excited about what she's learned and feeling like she's accomplished something. We're looking forward to many more years of learning with Deborah!

Diane assembled a string quartet for my wedding that performed beautifully. I received so many compliments from my guests about them. Beyond the overall quality, I greatly appreciated their versatility. They performed classical music for the ceremony and contemporary music for the cocktail reception. And Diane can sing as well. Her vocal performance moved many of our guests to tears and provided "the special moment" that everyone will remember.

Laura has been my 6yr old son's violin teacher for a bit more than a year now. My son would not miss one single lesson and would do everything to attend Laura's class. She is the kindest and most encouraging, supportive and understanding teacher I have ever met. She has adapted to the way our son is learning how to play the violin and I could not thank her more for that. It encourages him to do better every time we meet, and to practice at home to make sure he has a "new piece" or a "more polished" performance to show Laura every time. She always makes sure the student understands the discipline required by the instrument but also always makes sure that the student has great pleasure playing his piece. She has given us advice on Master classes or string events that she thought our child could participate in, and every time it has been a wonderful experience. Her suggestions are always great. Finally, her love for music and teaching is contagious, we are blessed to have found such a great violin teacher!

David was a great teacher! It was clear he had a great understanding and expertise in the fundamentals of the violin and absolutely knew how to build a person up from the ground up skill-set wise. He provided some great music which taught me well and I was able to excel quickly based on the music he provided and the lessons he taught me. He had a very pleasant demeanor and I would absolutely recommend him to anyone starting off new with the violin.

Julian has been a great influence on my daughter’s musical growth. He holds her to an appropriately high standard while keeping the lessons fun and engaging. My daughter loves her lessons and the comprehensive practice strategy Julian provides. He has increased her endurance for practicing which has allowed her to make some significant technical leaps. Since working with Julian I’ve seen improvements in her technique and her commitment to her violin. I’d highly recommend him to anyone looking for exceptional violin instruction!

The members of Legacy String Trio played at both of our Catholic and Jewish wedding ceremonies, as well as our cocktail hour, in April 2015. From the moment I asked the trio to be part of our wedding day, they were professional and knowledgeable in guiding us in our music selections for both ceremonies. We were given lists of music and advised as to what would be appropriate for each part of the Catholic and Jewish ceremony. They helped my husband and me select music that fit our style and personalities for the ceremonies, and music our guests of all ages would enjoy for the cocktail hour. Their expertise put us at ease during a stressful time of planning our special day. When our wedding day arrived we were confident in the Legacy String Trio to add that special touch and they did just that; simply amazing! My husband and I are very grateful to have had the Legacy String Trio be part of our wedding and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to add that special touch to their wedding day.

My department was hosting an event to honor a longtime professor who recently had an endowed chair made in his honor. We wanted to have some music and Xinyi Xu's contact information was given to me by Peabody. Xinyi and two of her colleagues performed as a string trio and attendees could not have been happier or more impressed. Xinyi and the others were absolutely professional and appropriate for the gathering, and I appreciated their flexibility when the program was running late. They sounded beautiful, were prompt and on time, and were very easy to work with---They even created samples for me when I was still trying to book a group. I highly recommend them to anyone needed a trio for a wedding, ceremony, or celebratory event.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
