I had two guys helped with the move. They were friendly but definitely not the most efficient moving company I've used. Also, a few problems after the move. 1st, we believe they didn't return my apartment key fob after the move. I called the company few times and was told there is nothing they can do. I called the mover and he said he was sure he gave it to my husband (in fact my husband was the person who noticed the fob was missing) and he will check their truck. but we never hear anything back from them again. And now we have to pay our old landlord a super expensive fee because we don't have the key fob. 2nd, packaging. I used other moving companies in other area before, and they usually come in with plastics packaging wraps and tapes. The other companies wraps most of the large furnitures, drawers, sofa, mattress and boxes, and then use pads around and between the items to protect them. However from what I experienced with the Real Deal Van Lines, they were doin by far the worst job protecting my items compared to the previous companies I hired. No wrapping what-so-ever, and items were not placed in the truck as the most protective fashion. 3rd. Probably as the result of the 2nd point, I recently discovered they've damaged my dresser. The bottom (specially the bottom corners) was badly damaged from most likely dragging on the ground for some distance. The dresser was brand new before the move, and it has not been moved an inch after they placed in my new bedroom. Therefore there is absolutely no way it was damaged from other events. Overall I will NOT recommend Real Deal Van Lines. I've had other moving companies who had considerably better pricing and better service then them.

The 2 guys that moved my belongings out of storage and into my new place were very nice and friendly...did an excellent job. I have only 1 complaint and it is that the BOSS of this moving company , IMHO, should try a different career...he has NO idea of what he is doing!!!

Luis and Abner were fantastic! They were jovial and professional, flexible and quick. Even when they needed to switch trucks, they still managed to only be slightly behind schedule. I used them for a multi state move and would definitely recommend them to anyone moving on a budget.

The guys did a great job - they were quick, professional, polite, and punctual. I hired MVM at the last minute. They were very easy to work with, and reasonably priced. I needed the guys to move a bunch of boxes and some furniture into a small moving trailer. I needed them to really pack the truck well, but I ended up having to re-pack some of it, after they finished, in order to make the load more stable. I think it was tough to get my point across because I was in a hurry to get everything together and done, and down the stairs to my moving trailer. I do not speak Spanish well. The guys spoke English pretty well, but I had a tough time explaining the more complex parts of what I wanted. That may just be me being picky because the moving trailer was going to be towed 1000 miles, and it really had to be packed properly - heavy stuff on bottom, at front, and stabilized with tie-downs. I could have addressed this better if I'd spent more time explaining it clearly, or asked them to call their translator. Everything else I asked of them, they understood and did perfectly, and knew what to do and how to move my stuff with minimal damage. They did a really great job, got everything into the trailer (and I was worried it wouldn't all fit) on a very hot day with record-high temperatures. I would definitely hire them again, and would recommend MVM, without reservations.

Phoenix Movers were wonderful. They were pleasant and professional. Our move was last minute and unorganized, but they did a great job adjusting to it. I've used a few other moving companies over the years and none were as friendly/family-like. We used them twice in the last few weeks and they were always on time and ready to work. Their prices are very reasonable and worth the work they do. I highly recommend Phoenix for all your moving needs!

I’d hire this moving company again in the future. 2 young men showed up on time and finished the job one hour earlier than I expected. They did not take breaks, all they did was work until the job was done. I had done a lot of research and I found this to be the cheapest moving company around in Hartford. Thank you for a great experience Advantage Moving!

About a month ago I started researching moving companies to try and get things all set in advance of our move. I called many companies as to do my homework. Erin instantly made me feel less stressed about our move with her great personality and professionalism. Fast forward to when the movers came (one being the co owner) They were on time, and shocked me with the quickness of their work but at the same time you can see they were paying attention not to get a mark on anything. Ron helped the guys with the move as well as gave the guys direction on loading the truck. I was extremely please with the entire process and will recommend them to anyone I know who is moving.

I am moving and I needed a lot of junk and some pieces of furniture removed from my apartment. Tom was great. He came early/on time, and worked quickly and efficiently. He is friendly, affordable, and he even swept up my porch, emptied my recycling bins, and made sure there was no debris left behind in my driveway! I will recommend his company to everyone for any project!

Josh showed up on time both times we needed him. We required an additional strong person to move some items from one room to another, and a second time back again, because we were going to be painting and carpeting a room. He was very friendly, cooperative, and very careful with out items, and worked quickly. He worked for the agreed upon price. His price was very reasonable, and nowhere near what a moving company would charge to move items within a home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
