Roger Johnson came to our house to inspect our kitchen butcher block table that desperately needed refinishing. In less than a week, he returned the table in like-new condition. He sanded out several deep gouges and applied four coats of satin finish. Roger is a true craftsman from start to finish.

Jeff custom built a hutch for our kitchen in Franklin MA. Jeff immediately reached out to us and came to our home to better understand our needs and offer wonderful suggestions and referrals to additional work we were wanting to have done. The job was started quickly and during the customized build timeline, Jeff continued to keep us up to date and informed, properly setting expectations. This past week, the hutch was delivered/installed and our expectations were exceeded. It is a beautiful piece that has elevated our kitchen both in tactical space as well as strategic beauty. It was fun watching him as he ensured every detail was in it's place - he truly has job joy! He and his team are very friendly - a pleasure welcoming them into our home.

JR and his team rebuilt a full bath in my house. The team was consistently there on time and as promised. Their workmanship was very good with the work done to my satisfaction. They cleaned up well after each day. I provided all materials and JR's team did the installation and managed the inspections.

Hired Equity builders through a recommendation from my real estate agent before the Sale of my home. At first I was skeptical of dumping more money in to the home. Overall glad I did it! Austin in particular , was more then I could ask for in a contractor .After adding new hard wood floors in the basement and a back splash to the kitchen. We accepted a offer , 25 thousand dollars over listing! Austin was a absolute gentleman, very knowledgeable, and helpful. Would recommend him to any one and every one! Thank you Equity Builders ! The Forde family !

Mike was one of the primary builders of our large custom built home. He did an amazing job on the moldings and other millwork. We had large dental crown moldings, chair rails, columns, wainscoting and other elaborate custom work all over the house. He also finished our basement and did a great job,

Tim and his crew (Keith, Jeremy, and Matt) did a fantastic job demolitioning and removing an old garage from our property. The project was completed in one day. The whole team was polite, hard working, kid and dog friendly. They made sure everything completed was to our liking and even took away some extra brush and leaves. Pricing was very fair. I would absolutely contact Tim and his team in the future and recommend them to friends and family.

Had water damage to the ceiling in my living room. Plaster had to be removed and replaced, I put a request on thumbtack and shortly I received a bid from Matthew O'Neill. Matt came to my house a few hours later to inspect the damage, then he spent the next 2 days doing the repair (he also did some work on my bathroom while he was here !) Matt was professional - did an excellent job - and I would recommend him to anyone !!!

As an interior designer I've worked with many Builders. Red House is one of the best! From their attention to detail and dedication to the client, to their professionalism and ability to get the job done on time and at a competitive price; I would work with them on any project they needed!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
