Melanie Soloman became my divorce attorney and instantly a weight came off my shoulders. The stress of raising 2 children with child support in the arrears too much to say, I felt as though the 3 of us where a joke to the other party. I felt lost in life. Melanie Soloman answered all my questions willingly, truthfully, and somehow made sense of it all. Absolutely by far Melanie Soloman is exactly the lawyer I needed back in 2010. Prompt, factual, trustworthy and just a superb divorce lawyer for a custody case. I am absolutely amazed at how well things are turning out. I am ABSOLUTELY confident that if I ever need her again she will fight for me and my family once again.

Stuart Alford has been my lawyer for 15 years. There is no one I trust more, am more confident and comfortable with as an attorney. Even (or especially ) at times when his advise may not be what I wanted to hear as a client, I know that I am getting both the truth and wisdom that make him so special in this field. Highly recommended.

Hired Tracey McNamara for what I thought was going to be a very messy divorce. After working with Tracey, she put my mind at ease that we could get through this, and hopefully, work with my ex and his lawyer to make this an uncontested divorce rather than going through 1000's of dollars and time over frivilous issues my ex had. While we were prepared for battle if needed, Tracey was able to work with the other party and his lawyer settle our divorce uncontested. Save me time, aggravation and money. She was readily available if I needed, responded quick to emails/texts and I was never left wondering.

    About

As a former immigrant I know how demanding immigration can be, that is why I offer evening and weekend appointments so I can make the process and a less invasive as possible. I only work on Immigration Law matters and as this is a constantly changing area of law, I feel it is very important to be focused on the law in immigration but I also diversify within immigration. You will find some attorneys who focus solely on one area of immigration be it business, family or humanitarian based Immigration law. I work in all the areas so I feel I can provide a more complete picture to my clients.

    About

I am a first generation Chinese-American immigrant, married to a French immigrant, and I am an immigration lawyer. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was a young child. I faced the challenges of every immigrant: learning English, integrating into the culture of my new home country, and learning about myself in a society where I was a visible minority. When I married a Frenchman, through him, I experienced the difficulties of an adult immigrant: getting his French education recognized by American companies, postponing plans to find his dream job, and keeping up his confidence in a culture with different social rules and values. These personal experiences led me to the decision to devote my career to immigration law. I am especially interested in helping married couples with their green card and citizenship application. I chose to specialize in marriage immigration and citizenship because I want to take what I have learned from my own marriage immigration process to help other couples with theirs. I remember the emotional strain, uncertainty, and helplessness my husband and I felt during the immigration application process. Before my husband and I were married, and while I was a law student, I applied for a fiancé visa for him, on my own. It took hours of learning. I didn't get everything right because I had to submit additional evidence, which meant more waiting and more feelings of being stuck. The whole process was more stressful than final exams.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

    • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
    • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
    • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
    • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
    • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
    • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.
