Jeff was able to fit me into his busy schedule. I needed a kitchen cabinet removed to accommodate a new refrigerator. He removed the cabinet and hung it in another spot, as well as made repairs to the wall caused by the original builder. He also replaced rotted trim wood around exterior window. He does excellent quality work at a good value, he is punctual and calls ahead. I am looking for more jobs for him to do.

Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

Jeff Marrazzo of All-Star Remodeling and Painting beautifully re-finished for us a very large back hall with enormous built-in cabinets. He repaired the ceiling, covered the walls with new paneling and painted all. The area is now transformed! He is a very fine carpenter and painter. He is meticulous about his work yet very efficient and very neat. Also, he's a very personable, clean-cut man who was very easy to have around the house. I learned he has many skills. We will happily engage him again when we have various future needs. (He really liked our indoor Burmese cat and was very careful not to let her outside, as he was in out so often cutting panelling in the driveway.) Maureen O'Halloran, Newton Center

Eduardo was very responsive from the beginning. I posted my job on Thumbtack just to get an idea what my costs would be. I hadn't even decided if I would build it yet. Several vendors responded but in addition to responding, Eduardo wanted to come over, see the place, and make sure he was helping me through the initial decision making.. This was very helpful to me and helped me sort through the various quotes I got. Any questions I had he responded. And just talking too him, he exuded an air of confidence that inspired trust. I was not disappointed.. After successful HOA approval, city design review and permit approval (no easy feat.. took over a month for city to schedule us in), Eduardo showed up with his carpenter, Claudio, who would be the expert carpenter he found to execute. Claudio was amazing. He immediately attacked the job with a professionalism and passion I have never seen in construction. The pergola is in Ipe wood.. The hardest wood there is. Claudio loves to work with wood and although Ipe can be difficult to work with he is able to handle it with no problems. Eduardo was in communication every step of the way. In fact I went on vacation and got weekly updates with pictures. During the process Claudio had many ideas how to make it better than the original. Eduardo supported this process and allowed Claudio to do his very best. The end result speaks for itself. I've had several friends come over and admire their work and some of them will most likely hire Eduardo for their next project. Finally, once final inspection was done, Eduardo explained to me that due to his desire to do the job right, he didn't make as much as he anticipated but he wanted to be clear that even so he stood by his original estimate. This is a fantastic general contractor to work with in my opinion. Rarely is construction delivered better than you anticipate.

Over the past 10 years, Pino Construction has done a great deal of work on our home in Newton, including a two-story addition with a new kitchen and master; a finished basement; and two new bathrooms. We couldn't be happier with the work, the fair prices, the attention to detail, and the follow-up. Bob Pino is a true pro and a genuinely good guy. He's a first-rate contractor and craftsman who has completely earned our trust.

Cliff is a hard working, professional carpenter with incredible attention to detail. I hired him to replace old basement windows that required much more work than originally anticipated. He is a strong communicator with excellent technical skills. Without hesitation, I would hire Cliff for future projects.

This is the first time I hired a carpenter for breaking two closets and making a opening between kitchen and living room (it is a baring wall) He is easy to communicate. Came, check and gave quote. from next day they started work and finished within 2 days. Before left they cleaned everything properly and also put some salt on my stairs. My wife and I was amazed. Thanks I got them. I am planning to do some other carpentry works.

Sean and Kaitlin showed up on time and quickly got right to work clearing out a foot of snow from my super narrow/annoying driveway and my front and back porch and walks. They were quick, courteous and professional and really did a fantastic job for what I consider a fair price. As I'm still recovering from a lower back injury, I was worried I wouldn't be able to take care of this all myself so I'm super thankful to have had the help. Have a ton of other odds and ends things to do around the house and Brophy Builders will be my first call for that and any other snow removal needs! Thanks guys!

Paulo was the perfect man for our basement renovation project. We liked him from the moment we first met him when he came to our house to give his estimate. Paulo came across very knowledgeable - but not boisterous -, friendly and professional. He gave us a quote that was not the lowest and not the highest, but explained us in detail where and why his quote was different from other bids. It was obvious that he was going to be our choice of contractor. Despite wanting to hit the floor running we ran in to a lot of permitting issues with the city of Boston. Paulo stood by us for all the time it took (+6 months) to get all the permits and helped wherever he could. Once the works started things went fast. Paulo's team was punctual, kept everything clean and was amenable to discussing and planning last minute changes to the original plans. If there was a cost change he would always first inform and discuss with us. He was also instrumental in solving some issues that came up while the project was moving along and he personally made sure that his subcontractors (mason, electrician and plumber, respectively) did their jobs according to the plans. At some occasions this even meant having them redo some things. In a couple of months we went from an empty basement to a fully and perfectly finished one-bedroom apartment. In a nutshell, Paulo (M&P home renovations) is and contractor that takes pride in his work. He will handle your project with professionalism and eye for detail and will do it for the right price. We highly recommend him and his team.

I am VERY HAPPY I hired jjrr to rebuild/extend my deck. I had just moved a little over a year ago, and what looked like a "decent" deck concept, was actually not very functional. The prior owners attempted to connect the side deck with the back deck using just boards pieced together to make one large wrap around deck. I really just wanted that part rebuilt since the wood was fairly new looking (it still had sticker price tags) and the side and back decks seemed ok. I received quite a few quotes, and builders telling me they could not use any of the existing wood and/or they wanted to knock down my entire deck and start over since it would not "match"...I was feeling discouraged because I knew some of the wood, if not all could be reused/repurposed. Then, thankfully, jjrr said they could not only reuse the wood, but they understood exactly what I was asking which allowed me to save money on supplies. They came out after we had a snow storm to look at the project, and were able to start the following week. They worked all day in the cold wind and even worked past sundown using a spot light. I thought I wouldn't be able to get this project done until late spring and here it is the first week of March and the project is complete. Impressed is an understatement. I plan on hiring these guys again to re-do my front steps in the near future. Thank you!!!!

Hired Equity builders through a recommendation from my real estate agent before the Sale of my home. At first I was skeptical of dumping more money in to the home. Overall glad I did it! Austin in particular , was more then I could ask for in a contractor .After adding new hard wood floors in the basement and a back splash to the kitchen. We accepted a offer , 25 thousand dollars over listing! Austin was a absolute gentleman, very knowledgeable, and helpful. Would recommend him to any one and every one! Thank you Equity Builders ! The Forde family !

Byron and his crew were terrific! We had a very old garage with a lot of termite and carpenter ant damage. They were able to remove and rebuild all the problem areas, and they made the two small door openings into one large one. They got the job done quickly and professionally. I couldn't have asked for anything more. They were just fabulous.

Without question, we are very happy with Andrew Winter and would hire him again for our next renovation project. We hired Andrew (Drew) Winter to handle a kitchen, bathroom and laundry room renovation in our recently purchased home. After evaluating many contractors, including contractors recommended to us by family and friends, we decided to go with Andrew. From our first meeting we felt comfortable working with Drew. He was upfront and honest, provided fair pricing and a realistic payment schedule and was an excellent communicator. Many times answering my calls, text and emails before and after normal business hours. At the end of the day, he is the type of person that just wants to make things right. In a little less than 8 weeks, Andrew transformed our 1935s kitchen, bathroom and laundry room into a modern marvel. There were many obstacles along the way and living though a renovation can be very challenging, however Andrew went above and beyond to keep our home as functional as possible and we appreciated his honesty, guidance, positivity and dedication to our project and happiness. What started out as a few minor renovations to make our home more livable for a few years turned into what we would be happy to call our forever home. That being said, Drew is already talking about the house he is going to build for us in a few years.

Alex is a gifted craftsman, with wonderful communication skills, and is extremely trustworthy. Recently, I had Alex install a window, and it wasn't a basic installation; there was a tremendous amount of rot, which I didn't know about, and crumbling brick. Alex worked diligently to complete the job, and the end product was exceptional. After seeing how the window turned out, I hired Alex to frame my bathroom and kitchen. Alex continues to demonstrate the attributes of a knowledgeable and reliable carpenter; truly a pleasure to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
