I hired Darcio of JMC Painting & Services to install new ceramic tile flooring in three bathrooms in my home. I hired Darcio because his price was reasonable and he was able to start the project within 2 weeks of my initial contact with him. Every other contractor I spoke with had a backlog of 8-10 weeks! The project took three days to complete. Some of the old tile had been installed with thick mortar and Darcio worked hard to prep the area for new installation. It did not look easy. Before the project started, Darcio asked that we supply our own tile, grout, and thin set mortar. At first I thought this was an inconvenience, but it actually turned out well because it allows you to pick out your own materials/shop around as well as learn a little bit about the tiling process along the way. Now that the work is finished, the floors look beautiful and are a dramatic improvement from what we had before. My only comment is that the baseboards were not removed in one of the bathrooms. I would have preferred to have all the baseboards in all the bathrooms removed so I could replace them later, and I did not communicate this clearly enough when the project started. Regadless, I would recommend Darcio for any tiling work you need around your home, he does a beautiful job and his prices are reasonable. Thanks Darcio!

Edilson installed soundproofing and porcelain tile in the kitchen and entry hall. He also removed an older front door and replaced with a sturdy metal front door and storm door. He replaced some older discolored ceiling tiles in the kitchen and replaced tattered screens in several window frames. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was done with careful attention to detail. He was punctual in arriving and made sure all of the work was completed to perfection and with my approvals. He asked along the way to be sure things were going as I anticipated. He willingly took on additional work that came up during our project. Edilson cleaned up the area and put everything back in its place when finished. I would say he is the best at what he does. He seems able to handle any job or requirement and makes sure the work meets all expectations. I am totally satisfied and others who have seen the results are impressed. I would request his services again if/when needed.

My husband and I were very pleased with Our choice of hiring Powers complete Home Service to install a new entry way door. Adam also installed new ceramic tile in our entryway and did a fabulous job. We had Adam come back and installed a storm door. Adam is very professional, polite, and work ethnics second to none. Very accommodating and punctual If he tells you he will be there a certain time, he is there, sometimes earlier. I would highly recommend Adam he goes above and beyond to get the job done. Best part his prices are reasonably. Matter of fact I have already sent some referral his way. Give him a chance. I'm sure you will not be disappointed. Thanks again Adam for All the great work. We will be in touch for more upgrades Mrs Testa. Aka Katie.

Hired A Star (Michael and his business partner Drew Cabana) to do a renovation job after my condo flooded out due to bad plumbing in the building. Here's what my project with A Star entailed: Kitchen sink, counter tops and dishwasher had to be replaced, floors had to be redone (complete new floating laminate floor in living/dining area plus custom cutting and fitting several individual ceramic tiles), some custom shelves in the bathroom cabinets had to be refabricated, the covering for the AC exchanger had to be custom fabricated and the entire 950 sq ft. unit needed to be repainted. Michael and Drew did an excellent job on this work on all counts -- both in their own work on floor installation, plumbing, painting carpentry and minor electrical items, and also as general contractors supervising other vendors The folks from A Star were willing to come back again and again as we had to do things piecemeal -- first while I waited for the insurance situation to be decided, then wait for the condo management folks to replace virtually all the dry wall in every room before painting and other work by Michael and Drew could start, waiting for the carpet company I had hired separately to re-carpet the 2 bedrooms so that Michael and Drew could then install the T-molding end cap where the laminate floor meets the carpet, and finally we had to wait through delays caused by Lowe's in the delivery and installation of the sink and granite tops, which my guys supervised (they did the plumbing hookup for the sink and dishwasher themselves). It took nearly three months -- through no fault of Michael or Drew. We all had to exert the right amounts of patience and pressure on the other parties. It was a good-sized job. Many other contractors probably would have bailed mid-way through and moved on to other jobs that were easier and more clear cut, but these guys hung in there. I had to return from the Florida condo to return home to Massachusetts before the work was completed, and Michael and Drew continued to work hard to get the project done even though I wasn't around in person. Michael sent me photos of the completed work as it went along. My only criticism is that the photos were often fuzzy and therefore it was hard to see if the work had been done as expected. Michael needs to either get a better camera or have someone else take the photos of their excellent work! All in all, these guys are great. Their price was fair, they did high quality work, are easy to work with and I'd hire them again.

Rick came to our house and measured our bathroom and provided a quote and a list of materials that we needed. Upon purchasing the products, we set a date and Rick agreed to spend 2 weeks working on our bathroom. He did some of the demo, put up a new subway tile walls with mosaic, a ceramic marble flooring, a new vanity and lighting. He also repaired the toilet, removed and replaced the sink. When he ran into issues with the electrical and the plumbing, he had a network of people to reach out to that offered reasonable rates. We left Rick the key to our house for 2 weeks and there weren't any issues. Whenever an issue arose that required additional materials and/or labor, he was sure to send me a text so that I was aware. The bathroom turned out lovely and we will be hiring him again to do the kitchen! And for random handy man type jobs - for example, our closet was off of its track and he fixed it (we tried for a month), he also installed a ceiling fan in our bedroom. If you are looking for someone local, trustworthy and reasonable - Rick is your guy. Attached are a few pictures - we still need to paint in there but we are in love.

Excellent job by Andre and his team. We had ~1100 sq ft of wood look porcelain tile installed. AJC took up the existing flooring (50 yr old Terracotta tile) and laid down the new flooring and sub floor. Andre and his crew are very professional and were great to work with.

I have been renovating my Mill-condo, and I hired Andrea to create a custom kitchen backsplash in tumbled tone with glazed ceramic mosaic insets. I could not be happier with the results. She is the best contractor I have worked with, and this was a great investment. Everyday I see her work and I am very happy to have found her.

Chuck did a great job tiling our mudroom floor. We bought tile to match the tile in the adjoining kitchen, and he was able to line the tiles up so they flowed nicely from one room to another. Our floor was also very uneven and tiles weren't perfectly square, but Chuck did a great job working around those issues. He was very friendly and answered all of our questions about the installation. We had high expectations and he definitely met them. He showed up on time, came in on budget, and ahead of schedule (it only took a day and a half). We will definitely hire Chuck again in the future and recommended him to our friends!

Our job was to replace our old vinyl kitchen floor with 6 by 24 inch wood look porcelain tile and install a subway tile backsplash with glass mosaic accent over our counters. We chose Davi Santos (Davie Mac Flooring) for this job because we were very impressed with his knowledge of tile installation when he came by to measure and size up the job. He was very honest and open about our options, both before we chose him to do the work, and as we progressed through the installation. He was on time, neat and very meticulous in his work. His insight regarding where to place our accent tiles was excellent! Our kitchen floor and backsplash look awesome, and we'd definitely use Davi again when it's time for re-doing our bathrooms.

Elite Installations did a very good job repairing the water damage due to ice dam in my house. The work they completed includes putting on dry wall, replacing hardwood floor, polishing hardwood floor and painting. In particular, I am very happy the paint color they suggested which turned to be really nice. They suggested to put ceramic tiles in the door way instead of hardwood which makes more sense. I definitely recommend the contractor to my friends.

We recently built a new home and had Milford Ceramic tile handle all of the flooring. We did the entire living areas in hardwood with the kitchen, entryway, dining room and bathrooms in ceramic tile. Honestly, their prices were right on the money! We set our budget and Gino at Milford Ceramic worked with us to make everything work. The installation was also PERFECT. His tile installer dealt with us creating a custom pattern in the dining room and did a beautiful job pulling it all together. Working with these guys was a fantastic experience. They were easily the best group to deal with during our house build

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

          • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
            • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
          • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
          • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
