This gentleman did an excellent job hanging multiple pieces of art/furniture throughout my home. He was very methodical and careful, and really knew where to hang things to maximize aesthetics. Took off one star because he was 2.5 hours late, but all in all, he did an excellent job and I would gladly hire him again. Thank you for a job well done!

Hired for removal of fallen trees and Spring Lawn Clean Up. We agreed to split the work into two jobs. Job 1 was removal of 2 partially fallen trees, which he and his team made fast work of. We met on. Saturday and agreed to remove the trees on sunday. They showed up ahead of the agreed time and finished the job in short order and cleaned up the street of any wood chips after the work was complete. Will post more once the Spring Clean Up Work is complete, but based on today’s work I would hire Thunder Landscape again. Antony was responsive, professional, priced fair and did the work we agreed to do.

Obed and his crew spent 11 hours on our spring clean out. The landscaping was beautifully done. Trimming, mulch, weeding, all perfection for a quarter of what you will pay the big landscape companies that are in and out in 3 hours for more money.

Dan Henna, owner of Pro Cut & Clean, personally called and visited the landscape job site to review the scope of the project and provide a quote. Within 48 hours the job was professionally handled from quote to finish. Dan handled every aspect from getting permits and the specialized equipment. I highly recommend Pro Cut & Clean for landscaping.

Gil and his and team did an amazing job clearing out what was probably years worth of brush! He responded to phone calls promptly and came out for an estimate within a day or so. His prices are extremely reasonable and my yard looks great. I have also hired his crew to mow my grass bi-weekly and it has made my summer so much easier! Definitely plan to have some more landscaping/design work done him in the future!

Bela Vista Landscaping was amazing, from first contact to when they completed the job. The customer service at Bela Vista is what every company should strive for - fast, helpful and responsive. Due to unforseen circumstances, Raphael has to work alone at my house and spent 6+ hours cleaning mulch beds and installing new mulch. He worked extremely hard and efficiently and very professional. I'll definitely be using Bela Vista again for more landscaping work.

Jairo and his team were phenomenal. I received a prompt quote soon after posting my request and set up a time for the work to be done. Jairo was very communicative as we tried to work out the price and time to come. His team removed larger branches from a tree I cut down over the summer - as well as general leaf removal. They arrived on-time and worked non-stop to finish in a timely manner. I highly recommend Acorn Lawn and Landscaping for any yard care. You will not be disappointed.

Chris was great. On time, quick work, reasonably priced. He also took some pics for some landscaping work I want to have done in the spring. They do a lot more than junk removal. They are a full service landscaping/snow removal company as well. Thanks!

Very professional and understanding of my needs and wants. Competitively priced. Invoices in an appropriate manner, not like another company I know that was 6 months behind on invoicing. Has all appropriate licenses needed for his trade unlike other fly by night landscapers. I would highly recommend to everyone!!!!

My husband and I have used Magnolia on many occasions for walkways, new gardens and planting’s and have always been pleased. Most recently we built a home and Magnolia Site Works, landscape and hard scape designed the entire property. The work was complex and required a lot of coordination with other subcontractors and management of conservation rules and regulations. The end result was more than we imagined and beyond expectations. Brent is very talented, always professional and his team is the same. Magnolia Site Works is at the top of our list for landscaping, patio and walkway needs!

My wife and I could not be more pleased with the great service and professionalism we experience dealing with Mark Manning. As a last minute wedding gift we decided to have our daughter's front yard landscaped and Mark gave us some great ideas and was able to stay within our budget. I received his quote quickly and the job was done within a weeks time while they were on their honeymoon. I highly recommend Mark and his crew for your next project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
