Sean Green was professional and responsive from proposal to contract and completion. Sean worked with us in a personal and caring manner in assessing, planning, and handling the multi-day complex roofing of our old house in April, which also included replacement of skylight windows. His price was competitively fair for this area. He respected our input and choices, but also gave good professional recommendations for us to consider. He communicated with us each day of the job, and addressed with us needs that arose with satisfactory solution. An onsite foreman supervised the job the entire time. Safety of the crew, as well as protection of our property was very evident. The roofing crew was respectful, efficient, worked well together, and appeared to also care about the job. Sean's crew includes a carpenter and a painter who were able to take care of a few small exterior repairs near the roof line. Clean-up was thorough. We are very pleased with the process and the outcome. We highly recommend Storm Works Roofing, particularly working with Sean Green.

Stephen O'Nell did a great job of communicating exactly when they were going to do the work, exactly how they were going to do, and what to expect. His team was professional, personable and hard working. I had many three story stuck gutters and they got them cleaned and working beautifully. I was worried because I had just paid to have all my windows professionally washed, but they left no waste and cleaned up beautifully. I'll definitely use Green Guys Power Washing in the future.

For our open house we Had some of our ceilings painted, walls painted and lots of trim work!! (Our windows and some doors were all dark brown- we wanted them white to be more modern). The work was quick and clean (no drips or marks anywhere to be found) and Reubert was very easy to work with, responded quickly and was really flexible as we added a couple of Windows last minute. His prices are really reasonable - would definitely recommend him!! If the reviews let me post pictures I would have!

I had a hole in one of my dormer windows patched. Billy was extremely professional and accommodating from our first conversation to the end of the job. He did a little bit of extra work that he felt was necessary and still kept the cost of the job at the same original cost that we discussed. I would hire him for other jobs in the future. It was nice to realize that I hired someone as professional, dependable and dedicated as Billy.

I hired Felipe and his partner a few weeks ago to replace 8 windows and 2 doors. They did an AMAZING job... Not only was the price good but they were able to start the job 2 days after I approved the estimate. I dealt with Felipe and his partner, who were both polite, always at the jobsite and kept everything clean. The job was done exactly on time. I will highly recommend them to anyone. Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU!!!

What can I say about John and Dave. Professionals through and through. I had a large window replaced in my living room. They worked together on day one with Dave coming early on day two to do the inside trim and finish work. They did exactly what they said they would do and when they would do it. I had an estimate from one of the big box stores back in September and I was NOT happy with the quote. I took a chance on Thumbtack and came across John and Dave. The end result is that I had a top quality job done at a significant savings. As an aside, I was so happy with the work John and Dave did that we're discussing the replacement of my kitchen cabinets sometime this spring/summer. GMN

Mark installed new windows in my 1850 home, and we had to coordinate with a moving company so that they were there at exactly the same time. Mark was easy to work with, and responsive to the schedule changes, and installed my windows beautifully and at a reasonable price, I wiuld highly recommend his company!

What can I say about Symphony Home Improvement. They were very fast in starting and completing a project on a colonial home that needed 19 windows on the first floor averaging 96" in total. (Two months in total with one day of install!). Gary was effective in explaining all the options available for our home. Not to mention his availability on meeting past normal business hours for two hours. What I liked about Gary and his team is that he did not beat around the bush. He was direct and it is always a joy to see him at all the other home shows in the Greater Lowell Area. I know I will need to use his services once we install new windows on the second and third level of our home. Thank you Symphony Home Improvement!

3 years ago I needed to replace my roof. I also had two skylights I knew needed to be replaced but was always so worried that if I replaced them I would have issues. A friend recommended I call Budget Exteriors, I am so glad I did. When I met Lou and showed him my issues he was very accommodating to my concerns. Lou is very knowledgeable about his products and the process of work that needs to take place ~ I was very comfortable working with him. (I did get other quotes to see if he was fair and he absolutely was.) Going on 4 years and my roof still looks great and my skylights are issue free. So this summer when I wanted to replace all the windows in my house. I called Budget Exteriors for the job. Lou again explained what would be my best options and I was impressed again. His communication with me through out the job was a pleasant add. He seems genuinely concerned for the homeowner to have a good experience. My favorite is my front bay window. My previous front window was flush to the house. Budget constructed my new bowed bay window and it is gorgeous! I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors to anyone.

"Just a different experience than we expected. My wife and I replaced 12 old windows in our house this summer. We got a price quote directly on their site early on which I thought was pretty unique. They got rid of the old windows and the work crew was great and got done on time. We've done a few home renovations in the last few years and dealing with Renoviso has been the best experience we've had. They weren't pushy and pretty much laid out all the options for us. I didn't feel pressured or that it was salesy, which hasn't been the case with the other projects we've done. Buying new windows is not something I knew a ton about so seeing the prices directly on their site helped a lot. The communication was great, they didn't disappear after we started the project and they followed up when it was done. Old school-type service and the windows have a lifetime warranty. Def recommended."

I hired Alek to update some trim work and moulding in my house. Alek was very professional, timely, and very reasonable on price. His service, response time, and reasonable pricing made it an easy decision to hire him to complete the job. Alek was and remained dedicated during the whole process to complete the job and ensure high quality work. It was very evident Alek was very experienced and knowledgeable. He provided some feedback and suggestions during the process as well. I would highly recommend his services to others. I will certainly utilize him again in the very near future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
